41. Teddy
TEDDY PRETENDED JACK SAT IN THE SEAT NEXT TO HER. “I’VE been a fool.” No, that sounded too trite. But she spoke the truth. He’d made way more effort in this relationship than she had. Jack called her “as cold as a beer in the bottom of the ice chest.” This thought made her laugh. Jack and his goofy sayings, maybe she should let her ice melt a little, more like a lot. His words hurt, and she would tell him so, as soon as she gave him a big kiss to prove otherwise.
Four eyes appeared in her headlights. Deer! She slammed on the brakes. Instinctively, she threw out her arm to catch Pepper before she flew through the window.
An engine roared on the other side of the road. Brakes squealed. Had they hit the deer? Her hands trembled as she pulled over. Whew! She stepped out of the truck and searched the road to see if a deer had been hit. Not one sign of the deer. She couldn’t see the other vehicle, but the road was clear.
She climbed back into the truck and took a few deep breaths. “Buckle up, Pepper. We’re going to find Jack.”
