Chapter 46

Riley

M att wrapped his arms around me from behind and rested his head on my shoulder. I leaned back into him, meeting his eyes in the mirror while applying my mascara. “We need a bathroom with more counter space,” he said looking down at all the makeup and hair products I had scattered over the tiny bathroom vanity.

“Sorry, once I get done and put it away it won’t take up that much space.”

His forehead creased as his eyes returned to mine in the mirror. “That’s not what I mean. I love seeing all your stuff taking over all our counter space. I just want more space for you to take over.”

Our counter space.

I reached for my perfume, but Matt took it from my hand. “Wait.” He bent and pulled something from the cabinet under the sink. “Wear this today.”

I looked at the bottle. It was from my favorite brand, but one of the scents I hadn’t picked up yet. I had been thinking about it for a while but kept telling myself I would wait until I used up at least one of the perfumes I owned.

I turned around and planted a kiss on his mouth. “How did you know?” I asked him.

“A helpful tip from Emery.” Everyday I found out about more “helpful hints” Emery had been dropping. He took the bottle from my hand and sprayed it on one of my wrists, then brought my other wrist over to dab them together the way he had watched me apply my perfume for the last few days. “I know you probably have something else you always wear for Christmas, but I thought you might want some new scent memories this year.”

“Careful, that makes it sound like you’re up to something.”

“Sweetheart, it’s Christmas, of course I’m up to something. It’s my favorite day to be up to something.”

“I guess I made the right call with the waterproof mascara today.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Are you planning to cry today?”

“You’re meeting my family for the first time and it’s Christmas. My dad is going to cry at some point today, which means I’m going to cry at some point today.”

He smiled and turned me back toward the mirror. I watched as he moved his mouth to my ear and whispered, “happy tears only today. Okay?”

I nodded and leaned back into him, smiling at the reflection of us in matching pajamas. We looked good together. I sniffed the inside of my wrist as I took a mental picture of this moment. He trailed kisses from my ear down my neck, eyes locked on mine in the mirror. “I can’t believe you’re mine,” I said as I watched him.

He hummed against my throat. “I love when you call me yours.”

Our counter space , the words he had said vibrated in my head. “Matt?”

“Yes, sweetheart?” he said against my skin.

“You called it our counter space.”

“Yes, because it is.”

I turned around and lifted his face so I could see it. “Is it? We never talked about me moving in.”

His brows knitted together in confusion. “I thought we had already made it clear you were moving in. Isn’t that why we’ve spent the past few days bringing your stuff here? We need to get around to getting the rest of it soon.”

My heart pounded and I blinked rapidly as my head spun.

“If you want to move in, that is. I should have asked. I just got so excited, I guess, and didn’t even think about it. You said you wanted to wake up every morning with me.” He was right, I did say that. Every time caught myself thinking about Christmas break ending and going back to my house with Emery I dreaded it more. It had been just a few days but I didn’t think I would ever be able to sleep without Matt in the bed next to me again.

I nodded so hard I felt like I might give myself whiplash. “Yes, I want to move in with you”

Matt gripped my hands in his and pulled me out of the bathroom.

“Where are we going?” I asked. “We need to leave in a few minutes.”

“I’m taking you to our bed.”

“Matt, we’re going to be late and you’re going to ruin my hair.” It was still a little damp from washing it this morning, but the curls already looked promising for a good hair day.

“I guess you’re just going to have to ride me. I won’t touch your hair.”
