Chapter 9 #4

“Well, I got it from here. You can go.” She examined her nails while they stood there.

She didn’t want to look at him. He made her nervous, and her brain always emptied out around him. She hadn’t seen him in days, and a few minutes in his presence revived her.

“I want to check on him, if that’s okay,” Rose stated. “Make sure he’s good.”

“Fine,” she muttered, rolling her eyes.

“Minx—”

Before he could talk to her, the principal strolled out with Mille at his side. His arm rested on the kid’s shoulder as he brought him over to Rose and Minx.

“What happened?” Minx immediately turned, wanting the scoop.

“He got in a fight. He’s suspended for three days and won’t be able to participate in the game this week,” Principal Meyers declared, and Minx frowned while her eyes darted over to her brother.

“You got into a fight? With who?” she asked because that was way out of character for him.

Mille got along with everyone as far as she knew.

“Minx, can we just go? I ain’t trying to talk about it.” Mille pulled away from his principal.

“He and the other kid are both suspended. Maybe your parents should try teaching him about his anger and how not to react to everything. We are running a school here, not a detention center,” Principal Meyers voiced, his arrogance turning Minx off.

Her brows dipped above her eyes, and she reared her head looking him from his toes up to his balding head.

“What did you say?” she demanded, her hand falling on her hip with attitude.

“Your parents… they are still around, aren’t they?” the principal queried.

Meyers wasn’t a man that kept up with everything in town. He may as well live under a rock. Surely if he knew who the kid’s parents were he would show some fucking respect.

“You assuming because they aren’t here that they are what… dead? Crackheads? In jail?” Minx suggested, and the principal seemed embarrassed as she called him out in front of his staff.

He turned beet red and stammered with his next words. Rose could see there was going to be no de-escalating this, so he stepped toward Minx.

“I was just saying—”

“My brother is always on honor roll, he’s one of your star basketball players, and he’s always volunteering for shit for this punk ass school!

My parents have lives, and I’m his sister.

I’m perfectly capable of coming here and picking him up.

He doesn’t get into fights, so tell me what happened. ” Minx got snippy with him.

“Minx, it’s cool. Let’s just go,” Mille griped, knowing his sister liked to argue and would stand there all day if allowed to get her point across.

“Come on, let’s go.” Rose grabbed her by the elbow and lead her to the door.

Principal Meyers was relieved when they left. Minx yanked out of Rose’s grip as they exited the building.

“Why did you do that? I don’t need you interfering—”

“You need somebody to before they end up calling twelve on your ass,” Rose chastised. “The fuck is wrong with you?” he sneered.

“Stop acting like you give a damn!” She got in his face, and Mille watched it unfold.

He’d never seen Minx and Rose argue like this before. At first, he thought it was about him, but there definitely seemed to be something else going on between them that his juvenile mind couldn’t wrap around. Rose pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to keep his anger at bay with her right now.

“I’m gonna let you have that. Clearly, you got some shit you need to deal with.” He waved her off. “Mil, let’s go grab some lunch.” He rested an arm on the young man’s shoulder.

“He just got suspended. He doesn’t need rewards,” Minx argued, clearly needing a reason to go hard on him right now.

“Minx, it wasn’t even like that,” Mille finally chimed in, pleading with his sister.

She sighed heavily, and it dawned on her that she was in fact spazzing the hell out right now. She watched her brother, and her gaze eventually softened when she took him in.

“This kid was being mean, and I stood up for this girl—”

“Was it Enika?” Minx queried, folding her arms across her melon-sized breasts.

Mille didn’t answer, but the guilt was behind his stare. Minx laughed to herself and raised her head to the sky.

“Mille.” She shook her head and stepped toward him.

Her brother had a soft heart, but he was made of steel, much like their father. He stood up for the people that he cared about. Minx bent over and kissed the top of his head before running her fingers through his locs. Her eyes met Rose’s right after and held his stare.

“Well, you were always taught to do the right thing. So I’m going to let Rose deal with you. I gotta meet Luna for some stuff anyway.”

“Are you going to tell Mama and Daddy?” Mille asked, eyes wide.

“I gotta tell them something. But I’m sure they will understand,” Minx assured him. “Don’t worry about it. But… I gotta ask… What’s up with you and Enika?”

Mille rolled his eyes and dropped his head.

“I have known her since we were in elementary. We just cool.” He shrugged.

Minx side-eyed him, unbelieving. He was growing up, and she didn’t know how to take it. Mille was like her kid, not just her little brother. She saw the glint in Rose’s eye when he peered down at him too. He was feeling the same about watching him mature.

“Yeah, okay.” A slow grin spread across her lips. “I love you, kid.” She nudged him playfully.

“Mil, go to the car for me and wait.” Rose handed over the keys to the new truck he copped for himself.

The last few days, he’d been getting shit in order with finding his own place to stay and having a means of transportation.

Other than fucking around with Finn on some chill shit, he was trying to get his head together before he saw her again.

He’d been doing a lot of thinking about her and him and everything in between.

“Okay, see you at home, Minx.” Mille nodded, backing away from them.

“What is it, Rose? I’m meeting Luna for lunch and we decided to go out tonight. I might have time to go back and get my feet done,” she huffed as he stepped closer to her.

“I miss yo’ ass, Minx. You really gon’ cut a nigga off?” He swept his hand over the top of his head and kept his eyes glued to her.

“What you want from me, Rose? You bored with your little lapdog?” She shook her head.

He bit into his bottom lip and peered down his nose at her.

His deep gaze rattled her to no end, but she tried to hold strong in front of him anyway.

Rose had the kind of effect that she could overdose on if she absorbed too much.

She didn’t want to be with him if he felt obligated because of her feelings.

She wanted him to be miserable without her.

Judging by his rough exterior and solemn eyes, he’d been going through it.

He still looked good, just troubled. Unlike Gannon.

“I need you, Minx. You like an organ for a nigga. I can’t be out here and not have you to pull up on.

That shit ain’t cool. I gotta hear about the shit you and Luna putting together through fucking Finn.

Nigga in a whole relationship suddenly, and I’m on the sidelines wishing you was there. ” Rose felt like he was being slighted.

“There as what?” She squinted at him. “As your friend? What exactly do you miss about me?”

“You gon’ make a nigga work for this shit, ain’t you?” He smirked, sweeping his hand down his beard.

“Why not?” She shrugged playfully and his eyes lit up.

“I took some time to think… about me, and you… us.” Rose was so soft-spoken that Minx barely heard him.

He was timid and unnerved, two things that Rose never was. Minx studied him as he clasped his hands together.

“And what did you come up with?” Minx tipped her head sideways.

“I don’t want to talk about this here,” he said to her. “I’m going to hang with little bro, then I gotta link up with Max on some shit. Answer the phone later so we can link up, a’ight? I got something I want to show you.” Rose reached for her and tugged her into his personal space by her jacket.

His hand swept the side of her face, and he raked his eyes over her. She sucked him in with those pretty baby brows and her breathing hitched.

“Answer the fucking phone when I call, Minx,” he warned, right before he kissed her gently on the lips.

Backing up, he left her standing there stuck on his lips against hers. With the simplest gesture, he soaked her panties, and she shook off the aftereffects so that she could go about her day.
