Chapter 9 #2
“Fuck you. I thought we could talk. Discuss some shit that can elevate yo’ hood ass, but I see that ain’t the fucking case!
You like this shit. Probably love it more than anything.
You can’t even expand your small ass brain to comprehend life outside of this lifestyle.
If there’s no room for that, ain’t no room for me.
So goodbye, Finn.” She slammed his door and trekked angrily up the sidewalk to the porch.
Finn didn’t even watch her get in the house.
He put the car in drive and sped down the street, burning rubber behind him.
He saw red as smashing down the street like he was in a race.
Luna had him fucked up. He hadn’t just invested his money with her.
That shit didn’t matter, but the time and all the effort he’d gone through for her should’ve been enough.
She knew him before all that, and now she knew him with her.
There was some change in him, and he did want to do other shit.
Until some shit was concrete and he had everything lined up, he wasn’t taking any chances.
Finn stacked his money, and he knew how and when to spend his shit.
Luna had no fucking clue what else he was on, and that was what fucked with him more than anything.
She didn’t think a nigga had it in him, like he was a born sucker or some shit.
Sometimes he just had to cut ties, sit back, and leave a motherfucker on stuck.
The tables would turn in his favor eventually, and by that time, Luna would be a fucking memory.
The hurt that burdened him simmered and eventually churned his blood.
Finn lashed out when hurt, often irrationally.
By the time she entered her home, Luna was in tears.
Crying, she slammed the door so hard that Yoni rushed from the kitchen thinking something was wrong.
Concern covered the elderly woman’s face as she dried her hands on a dish towel.
Luna had her back to the front door, and slid to the floor continuing to weep.
“Luna, chile what is wrong with you?” Yoni pressed.
“Stupid ass Finn,” she said, sucking in deep breaths. “I hate him. And you were right.” She rushed to her feet.
“Are you okay? I mean… I know that you cared about him. I believe he also cared about you too.”
“Yeah, well, that ain’t always enough. Finn is content with everything that he is. He doesn’t want to grow or change—”
“Well, he has changed. In the last few weeks, I have seen a change in him. And I think that you had a lot to do with that.”
“Yoni, I fell in love with this nigga. I gave him pieces of myself that I’ve never given another.
He just wants to belong to the streets. I can’t live my life this way, and I can’t bring any kids into this either.
I don’t even know if I want to be here anymore.
I thought that opening my business would make it feel like I was bossing up and doing something.
And then… some thugs… shot it up. I don’t want to live like this. Finn is just going to be Finn.”
Her grandmother listened to her rant and rave, and finally, she stopped.
“Are you okay?”
“I am going to be fine.” Luna nodded and started toward the staircase. “You always told me I didn’t need a man to define me.”
“True. But if you find one to make you happy, why wouldn’t you do everything that you can to make it work? If Finn makes you happy and that is what you want, why push him out?”
“Did you hear anything that I just said?” Luna fired back.
“I did. All that ranting just means you really care about the boy. So how do you really feel? Did you talk to Finn about his future and yours? Or did you get emotional and say some things you really didn’t mean?” Yoni queried.
Luna looked on guiltily and then her eyes fell on the floor.
Yoni nodded to herself. She stuck her big fat foot in her mouth, and suddenly she had regrets.
She probably made Finn feel like shit for nothing, being all scared and irrational.
Sweeping some hair from her face, she released a frustrated breath.
“Come and get something to eat. Keep calm. You can let him cool off and then talk to him later. Knowing him, he’s out there about to make somebody pay for what you made him feel.
” Yoni shook her head, put her arms around Luna’s shoulders, and guided her back to the kitchen where she had a full course meal waiting.
Luna’s head fell on her grandmother’s shoulder, and she thought about what she had said.
Many thoughts filled her head and she hated where she was leaning on the scale.
After eating, she went to shower. When she stepped into her bedroom, the cool air hitting her wet back, she grabbed her cell to call Finn.
He didn’t answer. Instead, he sent her right to voicemail.
Sighing, she dropped into her bed and decided to leave him a message.
“Finn, it’s me. Can you call me, please? We need to talk. I don’t like how we left things. Just… call me.” She recorded and then sent it.
She got a bad rumbling in her stomach when she hung up, and she wasn’t sure what to do with it. After slipping into her pajamas, she climbed into bed and pulled the covers over her. She was exhausted, but it was hard to sleep with so much bouncing around her head.
Minx checked on her mother faithfully. More than the damn nurses.
Mille wouldn’t leave her side. He was her personal bodyguard.
She and Rose were in the small kitchen together, Minx perched on the counter.
Palms at her side, she swung her legs and watched Rose work at the stove.
Pistol on the counter, he whipped them up some pasta with chicken from the little food that was stored here.
Minx watched him as he did his thing, and a small smile fell on her lips.
He was so tall and chocolate and fine as hell.
Feeling her ogling him from where he did his impression of a nigga that could cook, Rose peered up at her while sautéing the chicken.
