Chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE

HARRIS

We take turns patrolling Grimsby’s borders. Yes, we are hidden from humans thanks to the magic wards, but still, stray humans get in occasionally. Today is the red wolves' day to patrol. Marko and I take the southern border. Pairs of our pack mates take the other three sides. We are patrolling when we catch the scent of humans. Marko heads east, following a male’s scent, and I follow one west. Mine zigs and zags before leaving the wards. The confusion spell within seemed to work.

Turning around to go find Marko, I start off at a slow place until I hear a blood-curdling cry. Marko! I know his howl. I take off full speed in his direction, not wanting to waste a second because he needs help. The what ifs are running through my head and I stumble several times, but get back up and keep running. Once I get close to Marko’s location, I stop dead in my tracks. Blood, lots of it. Unlike fantasy books, we wolves don’t mind speak, but damn I wish we could. I have no clue what I’m walking into. So I stop about a mile away from where I feel he is.

I decide to shift and call the pack. We all wear telecom watches that fit our wolves and humans for just this type of emergency. Staying quiet as possible, I relay what I know and they tell me the pack is on the way to hold tight and try to get close if it is safe. Also, I activate my GPS tracker so they know exactly where I am. Hearing another howl of pain, this one much weaker, I decide not to wait, I shift back to my wolf and begin creeping closer. Once I’m about twenty-five yards out, I hide. There is an intoxicating scent of a human female mixed with Marko’s blood. She smells like a spring day after the first gentle rain.

My wolf whines, and I can’t help but wonder… Can she be the one? Our mate? However, Marko whines and snaps me out of my thoughts. Then I hear the most beautiful voice ever, “Almost… free… Haha, there you go…” She gasps.

Creeping closer, I hear Marko. His voice is faint but he says one word, “Mate.” Then nothing. Able to see them now, I see Marko, naked and bleeding badly from his left leg and appears to be unconscious. Unable to wait, I shift. As I step out from behind a tree in all my naked glory, the female is ripping off her shirt and tearing it into strips.

Stepping forward, her head whips to me and her eyes grow huge before she returns to what she’s doing. I take a second to notice her flaming red hair tight into a ponytail that appears waist length. She has the most amazing hourglass shape, too. However, those eyes, even though I only saw them for a second, shine like the brightest emeralds. Which is odd because they are hazel colored I’m sure.

She snaps me out my thoughts by saying, “Don’t just fucking stand there if you’re like him. I need to immobilize this leg. Get me four strong sticks a foot long and hurry. I can’t stop the bleeding. We need to get him to the clinic fast.” Interestingly, my nudity didn’t phase her much. However, she's not a local, but knows things she shouldn't, and is definitely human.

Doing as I’m told, I find what she needs. Handing her the sticks I get a good whiff of her. There’s no doubt, she’s my mate, and if what Marko said is true, his as well, but who the fuck is she? However, now's not the time. Marko needs me. “What else can I do?”

She glances up at me and I see a small spark in her eyes. “Are we close to Grimsby Clinic? He needs surgery. That damn wolf trap severed an artery. I need to operate like now.”

“Ya, it's about two miles north. And operate? That means you're Charlie’s friend?”

“Yes, Now how are we gonna get him there fast before he bleeds out?” She looks at me and I see pain in her eyes. Is it possible she feels the connection to him?

I’m about to speak when I hear howls and the pack four wheeler coming. ‘The cavalry's here.”
