Chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE

Unknown Number: Looks like your parents have company. We couldn't see who, though.

Me: Who is this?

I snicker, knowing I'm going to irritate him. He's so fun to rile up.

Unknown Number: You know exactly who this is, Miller.

Me: I do now. You're the only one who calls me Miller.

Rome: It is your name.

Me: So it is. What kind of car?

Rome: Cadillac SUV. White. Rental.

Me: The only person I can think of is who it better not be.

Rome: Monty.

I laugh. Oh, how my dearest step-brother, Thomas Montgomery, hates that nickname.

Me: He hates that.

Rome: Why do you think I do it?

Maybe it's not just me he tortures… or maybe he hates Tom as much as he hates me.

Me: Brunch tomorrow should be a real treat.

Rome: You can handle it.

Me: I hope you're right. Those odds aren't fair.

Rome: Life isn't fair.

Me: Yeah, yeah. I'll handle it.

Rome: Good luck.

Me: Thanks.

I'll need it.
