Chapter 17
SEVENTEEN
Asim
“Hey, she’s good, Sim., Get out your head thinking crazy shit.”
The sound of Amir’s voice had me taking my hand down my face before I looked over at him.
His words made me think about what I’d told her last night.
Get out your head. I snorted at the thought.
It was easier said than done. Even though my thoughts were a little more intense than Ky stressing about whether or not we would remain in this happy state, it gave me a new understanding of how easy it was to get caught up in the what ifs.
Ever since we had been here, my mind had been all over the damn place, which was the reason I made it clear to Amir to come alone, even though I knew Learah wanted to be here.
I also hadn’t reached out to her sister yet because I could barely handle my own thoughts.
I didn’t need theirs weighing on me too.
“She’s in surgery. How the fuck am I not supposed to think crazy?
” My jaw flexed again and my words were clipped but it couldn’t be helped.
I wasn’t in a good headspace. I gripped the back of my neck before standing, needing to move around because sitting wasn’t doing me any good.
My body was anxious and this waiting was fucking with my patience.
“Because thinking negative shit is only going to produce negative results. That’s how the fuck you’re not supposed to be thinking crazy shit, bruh.”
I chuckled, shaking my head before I looked down at Amir who had his heavy eyes on me. His brows were pulled in tightly, while he glared at me like he was angry because I was worried.
“I don’t like shit I can’t control.”
Amir’s face split into a grin. “I know, which is all the more reason for you to calm your ass down and stop stressing.”
I pushed out a short breath before my eyes moved around the area we were in.
Driscoll was a few feet away on his phone.
I couldn’t believe this inconsiderate muthafucker had the nerve to follow me here like I had two fucks to give about some gotdamn witness testifying that I was the one who’d pulled the trigger ending Nika’s life.
There was no way he had anything solid because he still hadn’t arrested me but the muthafucker was here.
With the way I was feeling right now, I could easily wrap my hands around his neck and squeeze tightly until the last bit of air required to keep him alive escaped his lungs.
“Ay, let that shit go. Mel said wait for her before you move or they might just lock your ass up, Sim. That’s not what you need right now. Think about Ky.” My jaw flexed when I pulled my eyes from Driscoll to look to where Amir had positioned himself at my side.
“She told him I was with her,” I mumbled, laughing under my breath. That damn woman never ceased to amaze me.
“Who?” Amir’s brows pulled in tightly again while he waited.
“Ky. When he showed up at the door talking about a witness, she hopped her little ass in front of me, throwing out lies about me being with her. She said that shit so confidently that even I believed her and I knew she was fucking lying. He told her she didn’t know shit about when or where and she shrugged that shit off, saying it didn’t matter because either way I was with her, like there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. ”
“Word?” Amir shook his head, laughing. “Ky’s thorough like that?”
“Shit, I guess so.” I raked my hand down my face again before returning to the chair that I had been in.
“Lil’ baby is a rider.” Amir smirked, sitting down next to me. I couldn’t help but laugh at the idea of Ky being a rider. She was wild as shit, hotheaded, and apparently willing to put it all on the line for me.
“Mr. Nour.” The nurse who greeted us after Ky had been taken into surgery earlier walked over.
I inspected every inch of her, trying to decide if I wanted to hear what she was about to say.
As strong as I was, there was no doubt in my mind that if anything was seriously wrong with Ky, that shit would break me down instantly.
Her shoulders were relaxed and she displayed a soft smile that reached her eyes, so I was able to relax.
“Ms. Spencer is out of surgery and things went well. As we stated before, Ms. Spencer experienced an ectopic pregnancy. The embryo implanted in her left fallopian tube, which ruptured. It’s the reason she was instantly nauseous and experiencing so much pain.
There was too much damage to repair, so Dr. Lennon had to remove it… ”
“She can’t have kids?” rushed out so fast I wasn’t sure where the thought came from. Maybe the idea of finding out she had been pregnant and lost it all at the same moment had me considering the idea of kids with Ky, but hearing her talking about removing shit had me worried.
“No, that’s not what I’m saying. She still has one healthy, functional fallopian tube which means she is very capable of getting pregnant and carrying a child. It may be a little more complicated but she should have no issue conceiving.”
My fingers dragged through my hair as I nodded in approval at her confirmation and she continued.
“She’s being taken to a room now. Someone will be out to get you in about half an hour so you can see her. Do you have any questions?”
“Everything’s straight? She’s good though?”
The nurse smiled widely, nodding. “Yes, she’s fine. Surgery went well. There were no complications, so you can relax a little and they’ll be out to get you as soon as she’s settled in her room.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
As soon as she was gone, Amir was on my ass. “See, I told you she was gucci. Ky is a muthafuckin’ rider. Ay, there goes Mel.”
I lifted my eyes at the exact moment she passed Driscoll, who was burning a hole through me.
“Hey, how is she?”
“Good. Surgery went well, they’re putting her in a room,” I rambled off, not wanting to discuss Ky. I needed to know what she had. “You find anything out?”
She smiled widely and rolled her eyes. “You were right, they don’t have shit.
Nika’s sister is the so-called witness and her only statement was that she felt like you had something to do with it.
No facts, no proof, no case. She originally tried to blame you…
” Mel narrowed her eyes at Amir before they rolled over to me.
“But after a little research, they found out he was in the hospital at the time, so she threw your name in the hat. She swears it had to be one of you but there’s no proof.
Their witness has only named Asim, not one ounce of proof that ties you to the body or the area at the time of the murder. ”
“Fucking bullshit!” Amir based, grilling the hell out of Driscoll.
“Exactly. I’m sure they expected to back you into a corner or that you would slip up and give them something to go on. They tried to get a warrant to bring you in but the judge denied it.”
My eyes lifted to Driscoll at the same time I started moving with Mel on my heels. “Asim, don’t.”
“Nah, fuck him,” I growled, causing him to stumble back when I stepped into his personal space. Weak ass! Always big shit when you’re hiding behind a badge but the minute a real one steps to you, you’re cowering down.
“Witness, huh?” I smirked and his expression dropped as his eyes bounced between the three of us.
“She knows you did it and I believe her.”
He was inches from me when I pressed my finger into his chest. “You don’t want the type of problems that come with getting on my bad side. I suggest you leave now and stay the fuck away from me and my family.”
“Or what?”
My smile stretched wider and I saw his breathing hitch, barely noticeable but I caught it. “Use your imagination. Apparently you’re good at reaching. Get the fuck outta here.”
“That sounded dangerously close to a threat,” he said behind my back, with Mel speaking up right after.
“And you being here is harassment. Unlike you, I have several real witnesses who can back up our claim.”
“He murdered a woman in cold blood?—”
I stopped and turned to face him. “Actually, I didn’t. Know your facts.”
It was true. I hadn’t killed Nika, even if that was the original plan. Ceeze had been the one to pull the trigger, even if I’d had him thinking that killing Nika would be beneficial to him.
“Colin Driscoll, it would be smart for you to leave now, like my client asked. It’s nothing for me to file a defamation suit against you and your department on behalf of my client.
That pristine record of yours would be put into question and I’m sure you don’t want to deal with me pushing the issue.
You better think about how important it is to you to keep pressing this bullshit accusation,” I heard Mel say just as soon as I entered the waiting room and took a seat.
Amir stood over me, and when I looked up again, I noticed Driscoll leaving and Mel talking to the two nurses a few feet away at the station for this floor.
As Mel talked, they both nodded and stole glances at me, which meant she was laying out her plan just in case Driscoll didn’t play ball the way she needed him to.
Amir was the first to speak. “I figured they didn’t have shit.”
“This is another reason we’re about to be done with this shit. That could have gone a lot differently.”
“Could have but didn’t, and besides, you’re always on your shit and so am I. Neither of us is gonna get caught slipping like that. Not in the way where anything ties back to us.”
“That’s not the point.” I narrowed my eyes at Amir who nodded.
“I feel you. I’m not debating; I’m just stating facts. I don’t move like that and I know you don’t either. Besides, when you got a little baddie willing to stand up for you without you asking, there ain’t shit to worry about.”
His dumb ass smiled and I shook my head slightly. “That’s definitely not the fucking point.”
