Chapter 29

Twenty-Nine

As I walked all the way up the stairs, I noticed a group of Envies gathered by the door of the Chapel Room. They didn’t stop, did they? Jealous, jealous, jealous. The guards weren’t letting them gain access, but I walked right on over and opened the door.

“Go on in,” I said.

It was about time that the Envies learned that being a fucking idiot had consequences.

They all looked at each other, and I just shook my head.

“Oh, don’t stop being stupid for me,” I said, taking a seat on the bench inside of the room.

The group looked at each other again, and when they were sure I wouldn’t hurt them, they walked into the room and started talking about how they would steal it.

Some people were just a special kind of dumb.

I picked up my phone and called Dani. “If you’re hungry for lust, find me in my kingdom. I have a treat for you.”

And without waiting for her to answer me, I hung up the phone. She was here within a few minutes, sitting next to me and watching them.

We watched them talk for over an hour about who should touch it first and who should be the one to throw it out the window, which was three yards away—as if they would survive that long.

All of them seemed to have been born from two demon parents, having no close blood ties to fallen angels. So, in other words, they were idiots.

“Lucifer!” Everi ran into the room. When she saw me, she heaved over and took deep breaths. “Oh good, you’re actually here. I had to run through the whole castle just to find you.”

“Must’ve been hard work,” I said, kicking one ankle up on the other leg and gazing at the four Envies trying to take the cross. “Walking up those steps every day is a workout, isn’t it, Dani?”

“Yeah, definitely,” Dani said, watching the Envies with me.

Everi eyed her and pushed her ass between us on the bench. “I’m so glad I found you. I have some important information about the Envies trying to steal the cross again.”

“Really? I would’ve never thought the Envies were going to try to steal the cross again,” I said and shook my head, gesturing toward the Envies who were literally standing in front of us, trying to steal the cross. “Did you, Dani?”

“No idea,” she said. Her eyes flashed a deep black as she watched one of them get burned for the fifth time. She was hungry again. “No fucking idea.”

She licked her lips, and I could smell her scent of vanilla. It was coming off of her in waves, and I couldn’t wait to watch her devour the next man or woman who died from such a stupid thing.

These Envies weren’t going to stop. They kept going despite being burned every single time. They were weaker and so much less intelligent than the fallen angels from years ago.

Everi was one of those people that I couldn’t believe I actually ever entertained the idea of.

“I’m not that stupid,” she said. “I’m not talking about those idiots.” She shook her head. “I’m talking about the three idiots who tried to steal the cross at your party and the Two-Faced Prophet.”

The Two-Faced Prophet.

Everi cringed, watching one of her fellow Envies get burned while trying to move the cross.

“The Two-Faced Prophet, huh?” I asked.

One of the Envies staggered back, clutching his chest. His brows were furrowed, and Dani stood. “You’re done in here,” she said to the rest of them. “If you can leave, leave now. If you can’t”—she smirked—“I’m hungry.”

She stalked toward the man who had fallen to the ground and was still clutching his chest. His eyes became a misty green.

Dani knelt next to him and brushed her fingers against his jaw.

I leaned forward. He looked right up at her, fingers falling from his chest, and stared up as if she were his savior.

“Queen of Lust,” he said breathlessly.

“Commander,” she corrected. “Taken by the two strongest men in all of the kingdoms.” She brushed a finger against his lips, lingering on his bottom one.

“Two men that don’t deserve you,” he said.

She curled a finger up the column of his throat. “Envious?”

He didn’t have to answer; we could all see it in his eyes.

“So many people want what’s not theirs,” she said, drawing one leg over his torso and straddling his waist. “Do you want me, Envy?”

He placed his hands on her hips, and Dani’s eyes became hazier. I could nearly see his soul leaving his body already—a green mist moving between his lips—and could see the strength in her eyes becoming stronger and stronger.

“Do you want me, Envy?” she repeated, harsher. “Do you want what’s not yours?”

He choked on his breath, the power from the cross still eating through his chest. “Yes.”

Dani brushed her lips against his. “Then you’re going to enjoy this,” she said.

It was so ruthless, seeing her take his life between her lips; so violent, seeing him not even struggle; and so fucking sexy.

“All right,” Everi stood up. “Enough.”

Dani looked up at her. “Envious of him? I can give you what you want too.”
