Chapter 38
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
Wyatt pushes me back onto the bed, and the breath is knocked from my lungs.
His face is red and blotchy, and a surge of satisfaction fills me, despite the fact that I can’t breathe.
I wanted to run. Wanted to jump up and swing my legs around his neck and choke him out, but my legs are still stuck together, and my body is moving like I’m in peanut butter.
Everything is catching up to me all at once, and I’ve embraced that this is the place I die. Spitting on this man’s existence.
As I stare, Wyatt just stands there, staring down at me. For a second, there’s anger and…something else in his gaze. His pupils are huge. Then the lines around his eyes soften, his eyes glaze over, and he just…stares.
“Fuck you,” I wheeze, finally able to get a full breath, pulling myself up so I can kneel on the bed.
Wyatt’s gaze follows me slowly, but his body doesn’t respond. He looks at me like I’m not here.
I glance at his waistline. Surely he used a knife to cut my arms free. Could I snatch it from him? I’m still trying to catch my breath, but I feel like I can’t fill my lungs all the way. But still, I roll away so I’m out of Wyatt’s punching zone.
When I look back up, he’s just…staring, but his eyes look empty like a blank slate that’s been wiped clean.
Slowly, his head cocks, and in a soft voice that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end, he says, “Are you okay?”
His voice is softer than it usually is. It’s like he’s trying to be…nice.
This isn’t right. What the hell is he doing?
There’s a noise outside, and Wyatt looks over his shoulder. He takes a step to the side, then another and another until he’s striding from the room.
I stare after him. Did he just…leave?
The door clicks shut, and I’m frozen there, heart pounding.
Wyatt just left. I sit there, still. This is not the way I expected to die. What is going on?
Hesitantly, for the first time in days, I hop down on my feet. Pain shoots up my bones. That pain snaps me back into reality.
I’m alone. My hands are free.
And that damn hotel door isn’t locked.
