WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS HURTING by Dr. CJ Janowitz

Page 300

It can be difficult to love someone who is hurting. As human beings, we have a tendency to want to fix what is broken. And when we can’t fix these things simply, we feel helpless. Sometimes we may even strike out at the one we love, reacting in anger. We just want them to heal so badly. But empathy, and caregiving, is not the promise of making things better, but simply being there.

Your presence counts. In those worst moments, in those times where nothing you can say will change what is occurring, remember that every person needs at least one safe space, a shelter to run to in the storm.
