Chapter 3

Kai

I slipped into the bathroom and banged my head on the closed door. Fuck .

Lexi was all soft and gleaming in that way only females were. And the bathroom smelled of her even after she was gone. My cock was hard as a hammer, and I was never going to get that scent out of my head.

Hell.

I’d taken a shower at my parents’ house, but I needed another one—a cold one. I flipped the shower curtain back and turned the cold taps on. The blast of icy water helped, but I was tempted to take care of the hard-on that didn’t want to go away.

That silk robe thing was going to star in my dreams tonight, that was for damn sure.

I tipped my head back and fisted my shaft. So soft, so many curves that I could hold onto. I could see the sink from the space in the curtain. Right there, I could bend her over and she’d take me so good.

The orgasm punched me in the chest.

My gaze went dark and the heat of it left me staggering against the tiles. I lifted my face to the spray. She was my best friend’s sister, for fuck’s sake. What the fuck was I doing?

And yet, she was under my skin already.

It was the first day.

Hell, it had started in that realtor’s office when she’d been a ferocious little goddess. I still wanted to scoop her up and protect her—as well as beat that asshat’s face in.

However, that still brought Lexi into my life at every angle.

For the most part, I was able to stay out of the warehouse, but living with her?

Maybe I should move back to my parents’ house, after all.

I flipped the water to warm and quickly washed up. When I was done, I swore again. I hadn’t brought in my own towel, and the scrap of one on the rack barely met around my waist. “Shit.”

Maybe I could dart across the mini hall without notice. Gritting my teeth, I gripped the corners together and swung open the door. I thought I was home free until I spotted Lexi coming through the dining room doorway. My fingers went lax, and the towel swung open in the back. I cupped it over my junk.

She wore adorable, black-rimmed glasses and her hair was pinned up, but the worst part was her ultra-short shorts, as well as a tank over her braless tits.

Soft and grippable everywhere, man.

“Shit.” I darted into my room, aware my ass was on display before I shut the door.

Her laughter surprised me.

“Nice ass, Murdock!” she yelled through the door.

“You’re welcome,” I shot back.

I blew out a breath. At least knowing she had a sense of humor helped the tension riding my shoulders. I grabbed a pair of ridiculous boxers I got from Cash for Christmas. We always gave each other one prank gift. Too bad for him, I looked forward to getting a pair from him every year. These had vampire teeth all over them, one right over my junk.

I slipped between the sheets and stared at the ceiling for far too long.

She was right next door to me. What was she doing? Did she have a big bed with pillows and girly frills everywhere? Or did she sleep in crisp cotton?

I draped my arm over my face. Thinking about her in a bed was not going to help my cause.

Instead, I thought about the game and the stats the announcer had talked about, but I’d never been a stats guy and quickly, my thoughts veered to the thin walls between us. Was that her rustling under the covers?

Was she just as restless as I was?

I needed to sleep. The Burnette project was going to be a long ass day of framing out the add-on and hanging drywall. I’d be a whiny bitch about it with the heat already spiking.

I kicked off the blankets on the guest room bed. They were simple cotton sheets with a summer blanket but left me too hot. I got up and flicked on the overhead fan before flopping back on the bed, but it squeaked, making me wince.

Now she probably thought I was being an asshole over here.

Annoyed, I got up again and slipped out, heading for the kitchen. Wyatt’s bedroom was at the other end of the house, and I knew he slept like the dead. I opened the fridge and found a pitcher of water. After downing a glass, I raided the cabinets and found Wyatt’s stash of candy.

“Give me one too.”

I turned and saw Lexi in the doorway from the dining room. “Chocolate or sugar?”

“They are one in the same, sir.”

I tried not to let the sir stir something in me. Especially when it immediately put her on my knees in front of me. I held the bowl out.

She crossed to me and poked around, coming out with a Twix. Deciding that sounded good to me, I grabbed one too, as well as a Special Dark before setting the bowl on the counter.

“Are these from Halloween?”

She laughed. “As if they’d last that long.”

“True.” I ripped off the wrapper. “What are you doing up?”

She shrugged. “I’m naturally a night owl. Work makes me have regular hours.”

“Same.”

“I heard there’s a meteor shower tonight.” She glanced at the back door off the kitchen.

“Me and my boxers good enough for you?”

She glanced at them and gave me a little chomp. “Works for me.”

“Hell, Lexi.”

Laughing, she grabbed a mini bag of Skittles, then she opened the back door and left me behind. Following suit, again, I snagged a box of Junior Mints and caught up to her. She was already stretched out on a lounger, her curvy legs crossed at the ankle.

In the shadows, her skin was smooth and shiny, begging for a stroke.

I picked up a chair and set it next to her, stretching out on it. Her brother’s house was in the middle of a neighborhood. Even at this time of night, there was still a lot of light. “You’ve never seen a sky until you’ve seen a desert sky in the dark.”

She glanced over at me, her eyes glittering in the dark. “I’ve never been out of New York.”

“Really?”

She turned her attention back to the sky. “Never had that pull to leave. Not like you.”

I stacked my hands behind my head. “If I could have left at seventeen, I would have. My dad said the only way he’d let me out was if I enlisted and there’s no way I’d be able to handle that kind of structure.”

“Nothing wrong with structure.”

I grinned, knowing she was giving me the stink eye even in the dark. “Nothing wrong with going with the flow, either Lex.”

“Let’s just watch the meteors.”

I could hear the annoyance in her voice, and I couldn’t stop my smile from spreading. I got too much pleasure out of pushing her buttons.

But I did relax for the first time since I’d been back in Indigo Valley.

And I tried not to think too hard about the fact that it was with her .
