7. Alexis

CHAPTER 7

Alexis

I hate that I flinch beneath the intensity of Evan’s gaze that sees too fucking much.

When his smile widens, anger sparks through my veins. I refuse to back down. “I’m sure there are plenty of whores happy to spread their legs for you.” I step around him, intending to grab my duffle bag and flee to my room, but my mother’s voice stops me.

“Good grief, Lexi. Why do you antagonize your stepbrother like that?” Her hands move to her hips as she glares at me.

Oh, Jesus. This shit again . “All that frowning is catching up with you.” My gaze scans over her face, lingering on the nonexistent fine lines. “You may need another visit to Dr. Botox.”

She gasps, her fingers flying to her face, gingerly rubbing her skin. She’s about to flee to the bathroom when Preston walks through the door, scorn radiating from him. “You look beautiful, Cynthia. You don’t have wrinkles.” He glowers at me, scowling. “Stop giving your mother a hard time.”

I turn my head away to hide my smile. I catch Evan smirking before he glowers at me, pissed at what I said before our parents walked through the door.

“The movers are bringing in the furniture.” Preston nods toward the open door. “Do you know where you want everything?”

“Yeah, I think so.” I grab the handle of my suitcase and head toward my room without a backward glance.

My mother’s grating voice follows me. “You should already know where you want everything. Enough of this indecisive bullshit.”

I glance over my shoulder as her heels click against the floor behind me. “Language, Mom.”

“Don’t ‘language’ me, missy. The things I’ve heard from your mouth the past two weeks would make a sailor blush.”

As she prattles on, I realize my palms are still tingling from touching Evan’s rock-hard chest.

Damn it. I squeeze my eyes closed . Stop this nonsense. He doesn’t affect you. You’re just horny and missing the warmth of a human body . Vibrators and toys get the job done, but there’s no substitute for a man’s heavy weight pressing me into the mattress.

With a sigh, I step inside my room. It may not have any furnishings yet, but it’s the nicest place I’ve ever lived.

I spin around and nearly crash into Evan standing right behind me. I grapple for balance, my hands landing on Evan’s hard-as-a-rock chest.

His charcoal eyes narrow, burning into mine as he steadies me. “Listen carefully, Alexis. You can run, but you can’t hide. There is no escape.”

I shiver from the coldness in his eyes. My body overheats when his gaze roams down my body, undressing me with a single look as they trail down my black V-neck tee and my white jean shorts.

When his eyes lock with mine, he sneers at me. “It’s useless to fight me. I always get what I want.” His lips hover over mine. “And what I want is you .”

He steps back, breaking the spell.

Terror coils in my gut like a snake. He’s just hit on my deepest fear. I’m afraid that when he sinks his fangs into me, I’ll willingly let him eat me alive.
