CHAPTER 60

Alexis

D isappointment makes my shoulders slump as I trudge down the hallway toward biology class. The thought of seeing Huntley knots up my insides, making my stomach hurt.

It’s worse today because Sophia texted, saying she was too ill to attend class.

There’s no telling how he’ll act today with Sophia’s absence. A lump forms in my throat. I hope he doesn’t want me to come to his office.

I blow out a relieved breath when I step inside the classroom, and he’s not there.

I reach my usual seat, my fingers trembling as I set my backpack down before slouching in the chair. My head falls back, and I stare at the ceiling. I wish this class were over already .

The chair beside me scrapes across the floor as a warm body falls into it. I tense, jerking my head up, scowling at whoever is bold enough to sit in Sophia’s seat.

But my expression changes when Evan grins at me.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

His charcoal eyes burn into me with an intensity that never fails to light every part of me on fire. “I’m keeping you company. I have business with Huntley after class.” He leans so close it’s as though he’s going to kiss me, but he doesn’t.

Publicly, we’re trying to keep things on the down low since he’s still my professor. We’re damn lucky rumors didn’t start at the underground fight club.

Our appetites for one another are ravenous. We take more risks than we should, and I can’t seem to stay off his dick anytime I’m in his office. We’ve also used several custodial closets near our respective classrooms.

We plan to tell our family when we return home for Thanksgiving break.

“Are you gonna sit here the entire class?”

Evan leans back in the chair, his legs sprawled beneath the table. His body is dangerously close to mine, making me tense even though I crave his touch.

“Why else would I have sat in Sophia’s seat?”

“First of all, the fact that you sat in Sophia’s seat tells me you’ve been stalking me, which is disturbing.”

“Why is that disturbing? You’re aware I stalk you.” He leans closer, making my breath catch. “I watch you sleep. I put sleeping pills in your food and coffee…” he looks around, ensuring we’re alone. “Ate your pussy while you slept. Those pills make you sleep like the dead when you take them.”

I stare at him in horrified fascination. I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s Evan.

But the way he so calmly admits it shocks me.

I hold up my hand when he opens his mouth again. “We’re gonna talk about this later. Not here and not right now.” I take a breath, trying to regain my composure, but his next words leave me anything but composed.

“Haven’t you figured it out? My favorite hobby is watching you. ” The intensity of his gaze strips me bare, boring into my soul. “I need to know everything about you. You consume my thoughts. My heart beats only for you.”

I stare at him, desperately wishing I could throw myself into his arms and kiss the hell out of him. How can something so creepy melt my heart?

It’s the Evan effect. He’s ruined me for all others.

A student drops into their seat two rows ahead, pulling me back to the present.

Cool it, Lexi. You’re in Biology class with a professor who both despises and wants to sleep with you while the man obsessively in love with you sits in your bestie’s seat. Yeah, this won’t end well.

My eyes narrow. “Did you have Sophia skip class today so you could pull this stunt?”

He looks at me as if I’ve asked him a question that is too dumb for him to answer.

Of course, he did. He’s Evan Whitmore. My stalker, my professor, and my stepbrother. The unhinged man I can’t live without.

I blow out a breath. “If you have business with Huntley after class, why are you here now?”

“Professor Whitmore.” Huntley’s voice interrupts from the front of the classroom. “To what do I owe the honor of your presence?” He raises his brows, giving Evan a look full of hatred, disgust, and, if I’m not mistaken, envy. “Are you paying your stepsister a visit before class?”

Every muscle in my body tenses, but Evan is as calm as a cucumber. “I doubt you want me to publicly state why I’m here in front of the class. We’ll discuss the matter afterward.”

The students’ heads move back and forth between Evan and Huntley like they’re watching a ping-pong match.

“I see.” Huntley’s face is nearly burgundy from his anger. “Then you can leave and return once class is?—”

“I can.” His eyes bore into Huntley, hatred emanating from him in waves. “But I won’t. I’m staying right here. I won’t be a distraction.” The arrogant smirk on Evan’s face clearly conveys he knows damn well he’s rattled Huntley and is a huge distraction.

Huntley tries one more time. “I don’t think this is appropriate. How would you like it if I showed up during your Psychology class?”

Evan shrugs, completely unbothered. “Show up to any of my classes. It won’t bother me.”

No one says a word as Huntley and Evan stare one another down. Huntley is the first to look away. He stalks behind the podium, getting ready for class.

“Fucking pussy.” Evan murmurs into my ear. His legs are spread as he whispers, “Wanna play with my cock during class?”

“No.” I glare at him, shooting him a warning look.

He smirks at me. “The offer stands.”

I roll my eyes, huffing as I pull my laptop from my backpack. “Stop. I need to focus. And don’t antagonize Huntley.”

“But it’s so much fun.” His charcoal eyes sparkle with mischief, and I swear, I fall even harder for this man.

Turning to my laptop, I open the screen and log into the portal. I’m acutely aware of Evan’s eyes on me as I prepare for class. “What?”

A genuine smile spreads across his lips, stealing the breath from my lungs as he whispers, “Have I told you how stunning you look today?”

My cheeks heat as gratitude spreads through me. “Only about ten times since we woke up.” I can’t hide my grin as I look down at my sweater and jeans, then at him. “Thank you. I love hearing it.”

He winks at me, and I melt.

“You’re making it hard to concentrate.” I try to scowl at him but fail.

His grin widens. “Class hasn’t started yet.”

“You’re still a distraction.”

“Good. By the way, I changed your Instagram settings to be more secure. There are too many perverts around here.”

“Like you.”

He smirks. “ Only for you.”

As soon as class is over, Evan whispers, “Stay here. I need to have a private conversation with Huntley.”

“Evan, I don’t?—”

He’s already on his feet, making his way down the aisle. I can’t help but stare at his ass as he leaves, intent on his mission with Huntley.

Stop staring, pack up your shit, and get down there.

I spring into action, saving my notes and closing my laptop before shoving it inside my bag. Students file toward the exit, many dawdling as they watch Evan approach Huntley.

I join the line of students moving slowly, curious about what will happen. I keep craning my neck and looking around the broad-shouldered guy in front of me to see what’s going on.

By the time I get to Evan, the room has finally emptied. Tension swirls between the two men as they exchange heated words.

Without glancing at me, Evan says, “You don’t listen, do you Lexi?”

“Evan, I don’t know what’s going on…” I cast an uneasy glance at Huntley, who dares to look at me.

“Don’t fucking look at her.” Evan’s animalistic growl makes me jump.

Huntley smirks. “I’ve never seen you so possessive of a woman before. Ironic that the first woman who brings it out of you is your stepsister.”

His gaze rakes over me from head to toe, making me squirm. “I see the appeal. What I wouldn’t give to shove my cock between those pouty lips?—”

Evan wraps his hand around Huntley’s throat and shoves him against the wall before I can blink.

“Please, don’t. He’s not worth the trouble.”

Evan slowly turns his head to mine as Huntley wheezes and gasps, trying to push him away so he can breathe.

“Let’s leave. He’s not worth the trouble.”

Evan swallows hard before he turns back to Huntley. “You’re lucky. She just saved your ass.”

Evan slams the back of Huntley’s head into the wall, watching as he falls to the floor.

“I meant what I said, asshole. Heed my warning. There won’t be another one.”

Evan finally looks at me, nodding his head toward the exit. “Let’s get outta here.”
