Chapter 10 #2
A drop of red liquid goes on every mark the vampires left on Daisy’s skin.
Some fizz dribbles out and Morgan wipes it away, waiting to make sure the wound closes before moving on to the next one.
Daisy will have a few scars, but they’ll barely be more than indentions.
Nobody will notice them unless they know what they are.
“She’s strong, despite losing a lot of blood,” Morgan says as he finishes treating the last bite mark. He turns to us and puts the beaker down, wiping his brow. “However, she will need a blood transfusion, and I can’t use your blood. Wolves and humans don’t mix.”
“Patch me up and I’ll go find some. There’s a hospital nearby. I’m sure I can find some human grade O negative.” I’m already planning my route.
“Wait, O negative? That’s my blood type,” Ansley says, pulling away from me. “If you need O negative blood, take mine.”
“Were you bitten?” Morgan asks. “I can’t use blood that’s been tainted by a vampire.”
“No, I wasn’t bitten at all,” Ansley says.
Part of me wants to say no. I’m not even sure what Ansley is, other than some kind of Scion. But while wolves and humans don’t mix, that isn’t an issue for most other Scions. Their blood isn’t that much different from human blood, other than the ease of extracting it.
Besides, if her blood isn’t compatible, it might tell me more about what she is. Morgan will notice if there’s anything unusual.
“Be careful. Don’t give her too much until you’re sure there won’t be a problem,” I say.
“Why would there be a problem?” Ansley asks, raising a brow.
“It’s best to be cautious,” I rumble, even though that’s not the real reason.
“I’ve done this plenty of times,” Morgan says, gathering the materials he needs. “Come have a seat over here, miss.”
Ansley sits down and I pace while I wait for Morgan to fill a bag with her blood. He’s gentle and even puts a band-aid on her arm when he’s done. It was no different from getting her blood taken at a regular doctor’s office or donating at a clinic.
Morgan carries the bag of blood over and prepares for the transfusion. He’s careful, like I suggested. He gives Daisy a few drops and monitors her reaction before adjusting the drip. Daisy seems to be fine, so my concern eases.
“Exactly what she needs,” Morgan murmurs. “This transfusion will help. Sleep will do the rest of the healing. I’ll need to keep her under the spell for a few days, just to be safe, but she’ll make a full recovery. I’m sure of it.”
“We have to leave her here?” Ainsley asks apprehensively.
“Morgan is someone we can trust,” I growl. “She’ll get better care from him than she will at any hospital, especially considering why she’s here.”
“Okay,” Ansley relents, glancing at me. “What about you? Do you have to stay, too?”
“Hayden will be fine. It takes a lot more than a few bites to down a wolf. Especially an Alpha,” Morgan chuckles, retrieving the beaker and approaching me. “Want me to sedate you or just give you something to gnaw on?”
“I’ll be fine,” I say, gritting my teeth and sitting down.
Morgan’s concoction burns worse than the vampire bites, especially when the venom turns into a fizz that oozes out of my wounds.
It takes a lot of effort to stop myself from howling, but I manage.
He uses a salve on the claw marks. I’ll have a few scars for the collection, but it’s nothing I haven’t dealt with before.
“That’s all I can do,” Morgan says. “But you’ll heal.”
“Thank you,” I say, wincing my way through the pain. “I’ll have Storm send you the usual payment, unless you’re going to charge me extra for her.”
“Nah, no extra charge for treating a human,” he chuckles. “Unless she wakes up and starts eating my food, but she’s a few days from being ready for that.”
“We’ll be back for her before that happens,” I stand up and gesture to Ansley. “Ready to go?”
“Um, I really don’t want to just leave her here, but if she’s going to be asleep for a few days…” Ansley hesitates, but she reluctantly pulls away from her best friend. “I want to be here when you wake her up. She’ll be confused and scared. I can help keep her from freaking out.”
“I’ll make sure you’re here,” I promise, then I concentrate, using my returning strength to shift into my Third Form, holding the blanket tight. “Morgan, you got anything I can throw on other than a dirty rag?”
“Mm, I doubt it, but I can give you a cleaner one. Leave that one outside where you found it,” Morgan says. “No way my clothes will fit you.”
Morgan gives me a blanket that’s folded from the wash and bigger than the dirty one I’m wearing. I step around the corner and drape it over my body. It’s long enough that I don’t look like I’m wandering around naked, but it’s sure to draw some attention.
“We’ll walk to a store, and then you can call us an Uber,” I grind out as I step around the corner.
“Where are we going?” Ansley asks curiously.
“York Financial first,” I answer. “I need to get my clothes and my phone so I can call my brothers. Then we’ll go to one of my safehouses for the night.”
“Your clothes are at York Financial?” Ansley asks. “Because you were watching me?”
“Yes,” I answer her without elaborating further. “Come on, let’s go.”
“I’ll be back for you, Daisy,” Ansley whispers, squeezing her best friend’s hand. “I promise. I’ll also make sure Caddo gets fed. If there’s any part of you still awake in there, I’m sure you’re worried about him more than anything else.”
We survived. That’s enough to count my blessings. But the biggest one is beside me.
I’ve found my mate.
But why does it still feel like something is missing?
