The moon hung low in the sky in the early evening as we returned victorious from the Ironwood packlands we’d conquered.

Most of our time in Ironwood had been consumed by pack politics. I didn’t envy Gage having to handle all that diplomatic bullshit, but he’d done a good job of it. My role as his second usually involved backing his play and occasionally throwing in a strategic suggestion.
