Chapter 1 #2
I turned and pointed toward the door on the right at the back of the hallway.
“That’s my office. Most likely, I can be found in there when I don’t have patients.
” We walked farther down the hallway, and I stopped outside of two mostly closed doors.
I pointed toward either side at both doors.
“Bathrooms. Because pregnant omegas have babies that push on bladders.” I glanced down at Owen and offered a smile.
“There are two?” He seemed surprised.
I nodded. “There is another in the break room. The door was behind the refrigerator. You might not have been able to see it. That one is the one I use, and both Cecil and Todd did as well. But you are also welcome to use either of these if you wish. They aren’t for just the omegas, but they are the closest ones.
They are kept fully stocked, and I clean them regularly. ”
“Do you need me to do that?”
I shook my head. “I use magic to do it, and it takes me but a moment and a thought. If you really wish to take over cleaning the bathrooms—”
Owen held up his hands while shaking his head. “No. I just want to be as useful as possible. I did all of those tasks at my last place.”
I shook my head, confused. “I appreciate it, but there’s no fear of you losing your position here if you don’t take on extra tasks.”
Owen smiled. “I appreciate that. But you’re the doctor. You shouldn’t be cleaning bathrooms or doing the shopping for the clinic.”
I shrugged at that. “It takes a moment. I don’t physically do it, so there is no reason why I should have anyone else perform that task.”
We made it to the front room. There was the desk to our left and two comfortable couches on either side.
Several pictures were on the walls, and there was a bookshelf with goodie bags for the first-time daddies to be.
Well, for anytime, really, because there had been instances where we’d gotten new patients who already had children at other places.
I moved behind the desk and woke the computer. “It’s pretty simple,” I told him. “My schedule is the green tab. I’m the only doctor at the moment, so there isn’t another doctor to have to keep up with. You simply need to add any new appointments to my schedule and hit Save.”
“This isn’t a complaint, but I was told there were going to be two doctors?”
I smiled. “Yes. There is a Dr. Camden Kennedy joining the clinic soon. I was told he would be here the first week of April.”
“Uh, it’s the last day of March.”
I chuckled. “Yes, it is. I expect Dr. Kennedy sometime this week or early next week. I haven’t been given an exact arrival date yet.”
Owen nodded slowly. “Do you have anything you need me to do this morning?” Owen smiled. “I’m not trying to avoid any tasks or duties. I’m just not certain what it is that you need me to do.”
I nodded, and after opening my schedule, I showed Owen this morning’s appointments.
“I have three patients this morning, which is actually a bit unusual. If I had to guess, I’d say that I am going to be busy for the next few months.
” I pointed to each patient on the screen.
“When they arrive, just click on their name and mark them here. My computer or tablet in my office will alert me, and I’ll come and get them. ”
Owen looked up at me. “That’s it? That’s all I’m to do?”
I smiled. “No. There are charts to update. I do that, but you will need to file the paperwork for the council for the new births.”
Owen seemed relieved. “That’s good. I already know how to do that,” he said quietly. “It’s the Genesis program?”
I nodded. “I know little about it, but from my understanding, it’s been used for a long time to help keep track of births, deaths, matings, and such. It also helps to keep things updated when we need to have a new identity.”
Owen sighed. “Yeah, my birth name wasn’t Owen.
It was Fang because I was born in the spring, and my mother loved fragrant flowers.
When I needed an updated name, I picked one that fit in a bit more since we were living in California for so long.
” Owen grinned. “Now I won’t have to change it again, which is nice. ”
“Did you wish for me to call you Owen or Fang? I have no issue with either.”
“Owen is fine. It works. My mate went from Jin to Jun.” Owen shook his head. “Two completely different meanings, but it’s what he wanted. I actually kept Fang as my middle name, so it’s still there, and my siblings still call me that on the phone, but Owen is perfectly fine.”
“All right. Owen it is.” I gestured to the schedule. “Over time, you will probably get to know the patients. But first up this morning is Chase. His mate is Reinhold. Reinhold is a dragon alpha, so he can be a bit intense. He’s incredibly nice, as long as you don’t hurt his mate.”
Owen nodded. “Understandable. I mean, Jun and I are pandas, and really, we’re somewhat small compared to a lot of the other shifters. But have you ever seen a pissed-off male panda?”
I chuckled. “I can’t say that I have.”
“Yeah, not many have. But pandas can hold their own. Now, against a dragon, I don’t think many can.” I nodded. “Probably a warlock,” Owen added.
“Possibly,” I replied. “Chase is sweet. He and Reinhold already have twins, but they’re four now, and I didn’t make the appointment, and there are no notes, so I’m not sure if it’s just Chase here for suppressors or if he’s here because of other reasons.”
Owen snorted. “You mean he had a heat, and now…yeah. I understand. Six kids. I understand how it works.”
I could only nod. “After Chase is Scott. He’s a lion shifter from down off of the mountain at the pride. He’s mated to Marc, who happens to be an enforcer. They have twins as well. I already know they’re pregnant and are here for their first appointment.”
“Wow. Two sets of twins?”
I made a face. “Then we have Drew at eleven. He’s most likely pregnant again.
His mate is an enforcer, and Drew is a cheetah shifter.
They have one, a sweet little girl, but Drew wants several children, and I’m sure that’s why they’re here.
” I highlighted Drew’s name. “Whoever took this appointment made a note.”
“Do you want notes?” Owen asked.
“They’re helpful. Especially if I’m not actively seeing a patient.”
The door chimed, and in walked Chase and then Reinhold right behind him. I stood up and smiled at the pair. Nope, he wasn’t here for suppressors. I bit my lower lip because poor Chase. I didn’t know how to tell him that there were two little auras once again. Maybe he already knew?
“Good morning, Chase,” I said. “Reinhold.”
“I need tea, Dr. King. The good stuff, because apparently, Reinhold only impregnates me with twins, and I’ve already told him he’s not touching me again until we can figure out how to stop that,” Chase said as he leaned on the counter and stared at Owen. “Hi. You’re new.”
Owen smiled. “I am. I’m Owen. Twins, you say?” Owen looked up at me. “Twins?”
I nodded.
“Seriously. The man is…I swear it’s his dragon or something.” Chase’s head popped up. “Are either of them a wolf this time? Am I going to be completely outnumbered in the house?”
I didn’t say a thing. I just looked at Reinhold. “Did you scent them?” I asked, wondering how he knew he was carrying twins.
“I did. I can’t tell what we’re having yet though.”
I nodded. “How about we come on back into the exam room, and I’ll do an exam and see if I can tell yet what you’re having,” I said.
I hoped that I was calm enough that neither Reinhold nor Chase could pick up on the fact that I wasn’t being completely truthful.
“Would you like some tea?” I asked, holding out a hand with a mug of tea in it.
Chase grabbed it as if it were a life vest and he was floating in the middle of the ocean.
Tea. He was going to need lots of it because poor Chase was, in fact, carrying two more little dragons.
