Chapter 12 #2

Banner nodded. He stood there before he started putting things in the box again.

When he was finished, he gestured for me to go down to the end.

I followed Maxwell down to the register and didn’t even try to protest when Maxwell paid for the box I was handed.

He signed his name on a form for the pair of boxes for the clinic, and I offered a smile at Lewis, who had been at the register.

“Have a good day, Lewis,” I said.

The fae smiled at me. “You as well.”

I turned back to tell Thomas it was nice to have met him, but he was gone. I looked around, trying to find him, but he truly was gone from the clinic.

“Where did he go?” I asked quietly.

“Who?” Maxwell asked.

“Thomas. He’s gone.”

Maxwell looked around before he shrugged. “He probably went to join Canyon somewhere.”

I nodded. At least Maxwell mentioned Thomas and I’d not completely imagined meeting one of the fates just now. I let Maxwell lead me out of the bakery and into the early morning grayness. “Is it going to rain?” I asked.

“It sure seems as if it is. I haven’t looked at the forecast though.”

It only took a few minutes to walk from the bakery to the clinic. I followed Maxwell around to the back of the clinic, where he punched in a code, and the door clicked. It took me entirely too long to realize that the pair of boxes he’d been holding were now floating in the air.

“I could have held those for you,” I told him.

“That’s sweet, but there’s no need.”

We entered the clinic, and I immediately went to the office and set the box and my tea on the desk.

The whole coffee cinnamon roll had certainly intrigued me, and now that I was thinking about it, my stomach started growling.

I pulled out the chair and sat, pulling the box closer.

When I opened it, I found four large cinnamon rolls inside, lined up on the left.

In the middle were obviously filled donuts.

They were shiny, so I assumed they were simply glazed and most likely were the ones that were filled with lemon.

On the right were more filled donuts, but these ones had chocolate frosting on them, so those would be the Bavarian cream–filled ones.

The curiosity was too much, and I grabbed a cinnamon roll first. I took a big bite and moaned when my taste buds were flooded with the flavors of cream cheese frosting, cinnamon and sugar, sweet bread, and yes, coffee.

It was absolutely delicious, and I figured I’d just found a new favorite sweet treat.

I realized too late that I’d not thought things through and there were no plates or napkins, so I started toward the break room across the hallway. I found Maxwell at the doorway, and he smiled at me after glancing at what was in my hand.

“Good?”

“Delicious. Have you not had them?”

“I have. I was curious what you thought.”

“They’re amazing,” I told him. “I didn’t think it through though, and I don’t have a napkin even.”

“Here you go,” Maxwell said as he held out his hand. In it was a plate as well as a few napkins. I took the paper plate, and after placing the sticky cinnamon roll on it, I licked at my fingers. Maxwell moaned, which had me smiling.

“It wasn’t intentional,” I told him.

“That doesn’t change the fact that now I’m thinking about you sucking on something else this morning.”

I laughed. I had indeed. Maxwell was incredibly generous when it came to sexual satisfaction, and he’d not ever asked for anything from me as of yet. I’d learned that he loved to be sucked, and any chance I could, I definitely put that gorgeous cock in my mouth.

“Well, here,” I said, holding up the cinnamon roll. Maxwell took a bite and chewed with a smile on his face.

“Just as good as I remember.”

“Well, someone must have wanted them as well because he told Banner to put four in the box.”

Maxwell made a face. “If you weren’t mated to me, you would probably be upset to know that they only have those once a month.”

“What?” I asked, my mind trying to understand why.

“Yeah. They are a daily special thing, and the specials run once a month. I think it’s more a twenty-eight-day rotation, but yes.”

“That’s so unfair. To others.”

“I said you’d be upset if you weren’t mated to me. I can make them for you if they’re what you’re craving.”

I sighed. “I’m not really, but yeah, it would certainly be frustrating.” I took another bite. “These are so good,” I said with a mouth full of cinnamon roll. The back door opened, and in came Owen.

“Good morning, Dr. King. Dr. Kennedy.”

“Good morning, Owen. How have you been?”

“Very well,” Dr. Kennedy.” Owen smiled at me. “I’m happy that the two of you took more time off. Did you enjoy it? Did you go away?”

I nodded while chewing another bite of the cinnamon roll. I really needed to set an alarm so I could wake up a little earlier. I wasn’t willing to give up morning sex with Maxwell, but I really needed more time to eat. I was hungry, and not eating wasn’t good for me or the baby.

“We did,” Maxwell said. He glanced at me and winked. “I took Camden to an island off of Greece for half of the trip and then a completely secluded one in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for the second half.”

I nodded. “I loved both, but the secluded one was more enjoyable. I can’t wait to go back.”

Owen looked between me and Maxwell. “Really? A completely secluded island? Just the two of you?” Owen sighed. “Must be nice.”

“Does Jun not take you on vacations?”

“Not to islands that are that private.” Owen shook his head.

“I suppose it’s impossible since we’re both panda shifters.

” Owen shrugged. “Anyway, we have a somewhat slow day today. Master Ambrosius is coming in at nine, which isn’t too far off.

There is…” Owen looked up at the ceiling.

“Chase. He’s coming in at eleven, and then Jennings this afternoon.

He’s coming in for suppressors. At least that’s what I remember. I’ll have to look at the schedule.”

“Thank you, Owen,” Maxwell said. “That sounds like a normal day for us. If you’re in the mood for a pastry or muffin, I’ve put the boxes in the break room.”

“I don’t mind if I do. I only had a pair of eggs and some rice for breakfast this morning. I need to get to the store, but I know that won’t happen before they close.”

“Feel free to take off once our afternoon appointments are over,” Maxwell said as he and Owen walked out of the doorway and into the break room.

I could still hear them, but I really wanted another pastry.

Now that I’d started, I was actually quite hungry.

I grabbed a chocolate Bavarian cream one and had it half gone by the time Maxwell returned.

“I think I’m in trouble,” I told him after swallowing the bite I’d been chewing.

“Why is that?”

“Because I’m really hungry. As in, these donuts aren’t going to cut it.”

Maxwell nodded as he crossed the room. When he was standing next to where I was sitting, he leaned down and gave me a quick kiss. Then he took a bite of my donut. “Eat your breakfast sandwiches and fruit and yogurt as well, my love. You’re growing a baby.”

I smelled them just then and moaned when I spotted the breakfast that was now on my desk.

There was a pair of sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches on biscuits that I loved.

I knew Maxwell had seen them in my memories.

Along with them was a bowl of mixed fruit and vanilla yogurt with granola on it. Yep, he was a keeper.

“Thank you,” I called out as my mate left the office again.

“You’re welcome,” Maxwell said after poking his head back into the office. I closed my eyes at the first bite and tried not to snarf them down too fast. But I was hungry, and my stomach was suddenly letting me know it was time to up my breakfast routine. Lucky for me, I had a warlock for a mate.
