Chapter 26 SAMAEL
SAMAEL
“Where. The. Fuck. Is. My. Son?” Chief Matthews bellowed as I stepped into his office.
I immediately shut the door, seconds before something shattered near my head.
One quick look at the shards of glass and I recognized one of the statues that sat at the edge of his desk.
“Are you threatening me by keeping me from my son?”
I snorted, which was obviously the wrong reaction before taking a seat.
“First off, your son is a fucking adult. Even more, because he’s Finn and not Killian.
” I didn’t mention my suspicions regarding who I thought was the real cause of all this shit.
“Second, I’m not in the business of kidnapping my exes.
Yes, he was at my house last night. Why? ”
“Because a certain woman showed up dead this morning in an alleyway that is a favorite of The Skinner’s.
Looks like his work too. However, I’ve seen that girl.
She works with my son and since I couldn’t fucking reach you, imagine my surprise when a little bit of digging brought up your name anyway.
” He slapped a thin file on the desk and slid it across the surface.
For a man who couldn’t pinpoint The Three Terrors despite one being right in front of him, he had been working hard these last few hours.
I opened the file, unamused to see Finn, Nyla, and Jade that he mentioned in passing.
We were all recorded leaving the scene, the fake Nyla piling into a cab.
Lace was safely at her home halfway across the city but the next picture revealed Finn’s handiwork.
“It’s not a crime to have sex with people, chief.”
“I thought you said you were done with my son.”
“We’re not dating.” And we weren’t. I had no idea what we were but it wasn’t dating in the normal sense of the word. “He invited me for a night out. Men have needs so I said sure. I made sure she grabbed a cab before I left.”
“My son had nothing to do with this, right? Because he’s going to be questioned and I can’t do this again.
I won’t cover for him if he’s involved. If I find out that he’s truly…
no. He can’t be. He came home to start anew.
Since when were you two involved in tag-teaming?
That’s one of the officers told me that was what you were doing.
” The disgust on the old man’s face was evident as if I had corrupted Finn myself.
“I’m not going to explain my or your son’s sex life to you. If you’re curious, you can ask him. As for last night, we had our fun and then we left.”
Chief Matthews let out a frustrated sigh as he dragged his hands through his hair. "You just left? Just like that?”
“Yes.” So long as no one truly studied the tapes to see that Aeron and Slash had been close behind me and then his son when he left, we would be fine. “We spent the night together. Chief—”
He held up a hand and shook his head. “I don’t trust the officers out there, not like I do you but I’m beginning to regret that sentiment.
What I do know is that he’ll talk to you in a way he won’t to anyone else.
I’m sending you and Victor to question him.
Protect my son but Goddamnit, if he did this… ”
I narrowed my gaze at the man who was supposed to be upholding the law. “Chief, are you asking me to shield your son? Do you think he did something?”
“I don’t know what to think.” His face twisted up in despair as he plopped into his chair.
“Finn has always been reckless, dangerous to those around him and himself. But he’s still my son.
Prod gently but get to the bottom of this.
Primrose, our city, deserves to be safe.
Even if it’s from Finn. It’s a slippery slope. ”
A slippery slope?
There hadn’t been any other reports involving Finn’s criminal activities so either he had learned to pull everything under the radar or Chief Matthews was referring to something else.
“Meet him for lunch, question him, and then tell him to come home so we can have a conversation. He needs to know that things will be different this time around.”
Now, I was even more confused. “What are you talking about?”
“I know you looked him up but most of it was concealed. He needed a new lease on life. His mother’s health was failing and I owed it to my son to give him everything, especially when after he was officially diagnosed.
” He tapped the table, inches from the folder.
“I need you to know everything, to know who you’re dealing with.
Finn came home to me, to the life he used to live and I have to believe he wants to change.
After all, he told me he’s quitting that damn newspaper and going back to school. ”
None of that was going to happen. Chief Matthews’ hopes were going to be dashed the moment Finn’s plan was truly enacted.
I sighed and flipped through a few more pages, frowning as more of Finn’s history was made present to me.
Just skimming through the file gave me a glimpse into a man that we thought we could handle.
“Who the fuck is Runo?” The name popped up a few times in one of Finn’s medical reports.
“He hasn’t mentioned him? He used to talk about him all the time. Constantly. Incessantly. If Finn ever mentions Runo, let me know.” Fear passed through Chief Matthews’ expression as his jaw pulled tight.
Who is Runo, Finn?
I added that to the list of things to research, right before I found a way to tell Finn that he’d be spending lunch with me and my new partner, Victor.
