Chapter 8 Midnight Confessions #2

“And they made room for every part of who I am.”

The room remained silent except for the steady rhythm of rain outside.

“What if my mom doesn’t understand?”

I asked quietly.

“I don’t know.”

Liam answered honestly.

“I wish I could promise she will.”

He rested his elbows lightly on the table.

“But I do know this.”

“You don’t have to decide everything tonight.”

“You don’t have to come out before you’re ready.”

“You don’t have to force yourself into conversations you aren’t prepared to have.”

I listened carefully.

“Coming out isn’t a race.”

“It’s your story.”

“You deserve to tell it when it feels safe.”

I nodded slowly.

That somehow felt kinder than all the advice I had imagined receiving.

He wasn’t pushing me.

He wasn’t telling me what I should do.

He was simply giving me permission to move at my own pace.

“You know...”

He smiled.

“When I first became your mentor, Professor Monroe asked me to watch out for everyone.”

I laughed softly.

“I remember.”

“You’ve been doing a pretty good job.”

He chuckled.

“I’ve tried.”

Then his expression became more thoughtful.

“But somewhere along the way...”

He hesitated.

“This stopped feeling like mentorship.”

My heartbeat stumbled.

He looked almost surprised by his own words.

“I started looking forward to our conversations.”

“Our coffee before class.”

“Our late-night work sessions.”

He laughed quietly.

“I even caught myself wondering whether you’d already eaten before every meeting.”

A smile escaped before I could stop it.

“Owen isn’t the only one.”

“I guess not.”

For another moment, neither of us spoke.

The silence between us felt different now.

Not uncertain.

Expectant.

“I need to tell you something.”

Liam’s voice became softer.

I looked at him.

“When you told me the truth tonight...”

He paused.

“My first thought wasn’t that you like men.”

I frowned slightly.

“What was it?”

“I was relieved.”

I blinked.

“Relieved?”

He nodded.

“Because I finally understood why I’d been so confused.”

My heart began beating faster.

“I’ve spent weeks asking myself why I think about you so often.”

He smiled with quiet embarrassment.

“Why every morning feels a little better when you’re sitting at our table.”

“Why every project somehow becomes more enjoyable when we’re working together.”

His eyes never left mine.

“I kept telling myself you were simply someone I respected.”

Another pause.

“I don’t think that’s the whole truth anymore.”

The words seemed to echo through the empty room.

For a second, I couldn’t speak.

I simply looked at him.

“You mean...”

“I think I do.”

His smile was gentle, almost uncertain.

“I don’t know exactly where this is going.”

“I don’t want to rush you.”

“Especially after everything you’ve shared tonight.”

He shook his head slightly.

“But I couldn’t pretend I didn’t feel it too.”

Warmth spread through every part of me.

Hope.

Disbelief.

Relief.

All at once.

I found myself smiling so naturally that it almost felt unfamiliar.

“I thought...”

I laughed softly.

“I honestly thought I was the only one.”

“So did I.”

Another quiet silence settled between us.

This time neither of us looked away.

The distance separating our chairs suddenly felt much smaller than before.

Liam slowly stood.

Not abruptly.

Not dramatically.

He simply walked around the corner of the table until he stood beside me.

“I’d like to do something.”

He spoke quietly.

“But only if you’re comfortable.”

I looked up at him.

“What?”

His voice dropped to little more than a whisper.

“I’d really like to kiss you.”

Every nervous thought in my mind disappeared.

Instead, I found myself nodding.

“I’d like that too.”

He offered me one last chance to change my mind by waiting.

When I didn’t move away, he gently cupped my cheek.

His touch was warm.

Careful.

As though he understood exactly how much this moment meant to me.

He leaned closer.

My heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear the rain anymore.

Then, finally, his lips met mine.

The kiss was soft.

Unhurried.

There was no desperation.

No uncertainty.

Only quiet affection and patient reassurance.

It lasted only a few seconds before we naturally drew apart.

When I opened my eyes again, Liam was still smiling.

“So...”

He said with a quiet laugh.

“I’ve wanted to do that for a while.”

I couldn’t stop smiling either.

“I’ve imagined it more than once.”

His eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Really?”

“I was beginning to think I was imagining everything.”

“You definitely weren’t.”

We both laughed, the nervousness slowly giving way to something calmer.

Something real.

After another moment, Liam became thoughtful again.

“There’s something we should talk about.”

I nodded.

“The fellowship?”

“And Professor Monroe.”

He sighed softly.

“I’m still technically your graduate mentor.”

“I don’t want anyone questioning your achievements or assuming you received special treatment.”

“I don’t either.”

We both knew how much the fellowship meant.

How hard everyone had worked to earn their place.

“I think...”

I chose my words carefully.

“We should keep this between us for now.”

He nodded immediately.

“Not because I’m ashamed.”

“I know.”

He smiled warmly.

“But because we deserve time to understand what this is.”

“And because the fellowship deserves our full attention.”

I smiled.

“I agree.”

He reached for my hand again.

This time I held his without hesitation.

“No more hiding from yourself.”

He said quietly.

“You don’t have to face your fears alone anymore.”

I squeezed his hand gently.

“For the first time in a very long time...”

I smiled at him.

“I actually believe that.”

We left the Honors Center together a little while later, walking through the quiet campus beneath a sky finally clearing after the rain.

Nothing about Blackridge University had changed.

The same buildings surrounded us.

The same pathways stretched toward the residence halls.

The same autumn leaves scattered across the sidewalks.

Yet everything somehow felt different.

Because somewhere between fear and honesty, friendship and hope, two quiet hearts had finally crossed the line neither of them could pretend no longer existed.

And with one slow, heartfelt kiss, everything that came next became possible.
