Chapter Fifteen

“What things?”

Cat asked, turning to look at him.

“The document?”

he said with a shrug.

“That’s only one thing.

Maybe she planned to use…what was it Fuller called it? Sexpionage.

Maybe she really thought you’d fall for her.”

He shook his head.

“I got the feeling that she was jealous of your wife,” Cat said.

“Rowena? She had nothing to be jealous of, she was born rich and spoiled.

As far as I could tell, she could have any man she wanted and she wanted a lot of them.”

“Every man but you,” Cat said.

“If she wanted me, it was to rub it in Ginny’s face, but Ginny’s gone and hopefully Rowena will be gone from here soon.

Her note makes it sound as if she’s giving up.”

Cat shook her head.

“I don’t believe it.

I’m wondering what her next move is.

Rowena must realize that you don’t have the document and since she has no idea where Ginny might have hidden it—”

“Just my luck.”

Dylan was shaking his head.

“I agree.

She’s not giving up.

I doubt she could if she wanted to.

But maybe she wants us to believe she is.”

His gaze settled on her, warm and inviting.

“You sure you have to go home?”

She nodded.

“Are you going to be all right here with Rowena still on the property?”

“I plan to sleep with one eye open and my .45 nearby, and as soon as she’s gone, I’ll reset the gate so she can’t get back in.”

Cat couldn’t tell if he was joking or not about the .45.

“Seriously, be careful.”

“You too.

Maybe I should follow you back to Fortune Creek.”

She shook her head.

“I’ll be fine.”

He stepped toward her, hugged her and then kissed her, holding her in the warmth and strength of his arms.

She didn’t want to leave, but she also couldn’t stay.

So much had happened today.

She needed time and space to try to make sense of it.

She figured Dylan did too since Fuller had made it sound as if Ginny had only married him for the list.

Cat was sure that he’d already suspected that had been the case.

But it was one more deception, one more lie, one more betrayal.

“When this is over…”

he whispered next to her ear.

The words rushed straight to her heart.

A promise of what could be.

If they survived it.

Cat pulled back to kiss him, then stepped from his arms to walk to her patrol SUV before she changed her mind about leaving.

It was later than she thought as she headed for Fortune Creek.

She put down her window to drive slowly, letting the cold night air rush in as if it could clear her mind.

She could still taste Dylan on her lips and all she could think about was being back in his arms.

She pushed the thought away, a little shocked at herself.

Would Taylor be shocked as well, or would he be happy for her? She thought he would be happy but maybe a little worried that she would get her heart broken.

He might also worry about their daughter.

Who fell in love seven months pregnant?

At least now she knew what Rowena and the others had been looking for.

But if the document wasn’t hidden on the ranch, then where? She reminded herself that the ranch was over a thousand acres.

Ginny could have hidden it anywhere.

Cat hadn’t gone far when she spotted headlights behind her.

Dylan? After she left had he gotten worried and decided to follow her home? The thought made her smile—until she noticed how quickly the vehicle was gaining on her, its headlights on high beam.
