chapter 4
The moment Ravin's boots crossed the boundary, the air changed.
A strange pressure settled against her skin, thick and electric, as though the forest itself had noticed their arrival. Every instinct inside her sharpened instantly. Even the wolf within her reacted uneasily to the pulse humming beneath the ground and twisting through the trees.
Beside her, Selara moved with careful precision, molten-gold eyes sweeping through the shadows while her body stayed tense and ready.
The deeper they stepped into the Forbidden Forest, the more alive it seemed.
Branches creaked overhead despite the lack of wind, and pale mist drifted between the trunks like something breathing.
Nyx followed close behind, fingers brushing rough bark and frost-covered roots as if she could feel the life hidden beneath them. Every few moments her amber-green eyes flicked toward Ravin, checking her condition without needing to ask.
Ravin had started noticing that.
Somehow, she had also started expecting it.
Her claws pressed lightly into the frozen earth as she forced herself to stay calm. The hunters were still beyond the boundary. She could almost feel Tomas's stare lingering behind them, cold and patient like a blade waiting for the right moment to strike.
But something else lingered here too.
The forest felt watchful.
Not hostile.
Not welcoming either.
Just... aware.
The trees grew denser the farther they walked, trunks twisting into massive shapes that blocked most of the morning light. Moss swallowed the ground beneath their boots while mist curled low around exposed roots.
The silence felt wrong.
Too complete.
"Keep close," Ravin murmured quietly.
Neither questioned it.
Selara shifted nearer on Ravin's left while Nyx moved closer on her right, the movement natural enough to unsettle her slightly. They had only known each other for hours, yet already they moved together like they understood the same rhythm.
A rustle sounded from the undergrowth nearby.
All three reacted instantly.
Selara's arm moved subtly in front of Ravin before she even seemed aware she'd done it. Nyx lowered her stance slightly, eyes narrowing toward the trees.
Nothing emerged.
Still, the feeling remained.
Like unseen eyes watching them from deeper within the forest.
Nyx glanced toward the shadows thoughtfully. "Do you feel that?"
Ravin nodded slowly. "The forest."
But even as she said it, she wasn't completely convinced.
Selara exhaled softly and relaxed just enough to continue walking. "If this place wanted us dead," she murmured, "I don't think we'd have made it this far."
Ravin looked toward her at the exact moment Selara glanced back.
Their eyes locked briefly.
Heat curled unexpectedly low in Ravin's chest before she forced herself to look away.
Annoying.
They continued deeper between the trees. Strange carvings occasionally appeared in the bark around them, nearly hidden beneath vines and age. Some looked clawed into the wood. Others looked far older.
Nyx stepped over a thick root and her hand brushed lightly against Ravin's.
The contact lasted barely a second.
Still, Ravin felt the warmth of it long after Nyx pulled away.
Nyx noticed her reaction immediately.
She didn't tease her for it like Selara would have.
That somehow made it worse.
A branch cracked sharply somewhere behind them.
All three spun instantly, claws half-shifted and muscles tense.
Nothing.
Only fog drifting through ancient trees.
Selara frowned slightly. "Either this forest enjoys playing games," she muttered, "or we're not alone in here."
Ravin slowed slightly as the feeling crept over her again.
She didn't feel hunted here.
Not the way Tomas hunted.
This felt different.
Careful. Curious.
Like something deeper in the forest was tracking their movements through the mist.
Watching.
Waiting.
The deeper they traveled, the stranger the forest became. Shadows shifted at the edges of Ravin's vision even when nothing moved. Once, she thought she saw small footprints crossing the moss before vanishing completely beneath the fog.
Then—
Ravin could have sworn she heard faint laughter somewhere in the trees.
Young.
Quick.
Gone instantly.
She stopped walking.
Selara noticed immediately. "What is it?"
Ravin scanned the shadows carefully.
Nothing.
"...Nothing," she said slowly.
But the feeling remained.
Eyes in the dark.
Watching them.
Waiting.
And somewhere deeper within the Forbidden Forest—
something had already decided to follow them.
