chapter 13

The first light of dawn crept through the narrow crevices of Bear territory, painting the stone halls with streaks of gold. Ravin stood quietly at the edge of the courtyard, boots pressed against cold stone, muscles taut.

Selara and Nyx flanked her.

Not like guards.

Like balance points.

Like if either of them moved too far, something in the space between them would tilt.

The children were already gathered, a chaotic but comforting mix.

Kai (8) and Mira (7) - from her old pack - clung close, attentive to every move.

Taro (5) and Lyra (4), tiger-wolf and wolf-bear hybrids, trailed slightly behind, their wide eyes filled with curiosity and awe.

All four had naturally latched onto Ravin, following her instinctively, seeking guidance, protection, and something they didn't have words for yet.

Something like anchor.

Morgan watched from a ridge overlooking the training grounds, her presence steady and commanding.

"You will move first," she instructed. "Observation before action. Bear strength comes from patience, not haste."

Ravin inhaled slowly.

The bonds beneath her skin were still unstable - not connections yet, just awarenesses beginning to settle.

Selara felt like heat held in check.

Nyx felt like calm pressure that didn't ask permission to stay near.

Morgan felt like stone - constant, unmoving, present whether acknowledged or not.

But none of them were fully tied to her yet.

Only orbiting.

For now.

Ravin didn't have time to name what that meant.

The morning began.

Patrol

Ravin led them carefully through Bear territory. The children mimicked her movements.

Kai matched her stance instinctively.

Mira mirrored Selara's precision.

Taro and Lyra drifted toward Nyx's calm like it was the safest place in the world.

"Keep your senses open," Ravin said quietly. "Even when it feels quiet, everything moves. Everything watches."

Selara's gaze swept the treeline.

"The Wolves would notice any weakness," she murmured.

Nyx leaned toward the children.

"We guide," she said softly, "but they learn themselves."

Nyx brushed past Ravin as she spoke - a light, accidental touch at her wrist.

Neither of them moved away.

Selara saw it.

Of course she did.

But she only shifted slightly closer on Ravin's other side - like restoring balance she refused to explain.

Ravin noticed something else:

Not possession.

Not yet.

Just awareness tightening.

Training Ground

Morgan brought them to the central clearing.

Ravin led the children forward.

"Copy. Don't question. Watch, then act."

Kai and Mira followed instantly.

Taro and Lyra hesitated only a heartbeat before watching Nyx like she was safety in motion.

Selara demonstrated balance and leverage - fluid, controlled, precise.

Her eyes kept flicking to Ravin between movements.

Nyx guided softly, steady, but her attention lingered on Ravin every time she corrected the children - like she was quietly measuring her.

Ravin felt it.

Wolf: protect.

Snake: observe.

Vampire: feel too much and pretend it doesn't matter.

The children trained.

Taro stumbled.

Lyra wobbled.

Ravin caught them both before they fell fully.

Too fast.

Too instinctive.

Selara noticed.

Nyx noticed.

Even Morgan noticed from above.

But nothing was said.

Not yet.

Because something else was still forming underneath all of it.

Not bonds.

Not attachment.

Awareness becoming structure.

Evening

By late afternoon, they returned to the hall.

Fire burned steady in stone pits.

The children collapsed near Ravin instinctively.

Selara and Nyx stayed close.

Not assigned.

Not separated.

Chosen.

Ravin knelt by the fire.

And felt it clearly for the first time:

Not three separate pulls.

But three roles beginning to define the space around her.

Selara - challenge.

Nyx - grounding.

Morgan - stability.

She didn't understand it yet.

But her body did.

And it didn't feel wrong.

That was the most dangerous part.

Far beyond Bear territory, Tomas was still a distant pressure - not yet close enough to interfere.

But already close enough to observe patterns forming.

And that meant the hunt had begun shaping itself
