Chapter Ten Embracing a New Future

Harpers POV

T he world tilts beneath my feet. I stand frozen in the heart of the ballroom, Evans words crashing through me like thunder. "Step into the open with me, Harper." I thought I was ready. But I wasnt prepared for what came next. " I love you ."

Gasps crack through the air. Whispers eruptvicious, breathless, and hungry. " Did he just say he loves his assistant ?" " Shes so lucky ." " Calculated . She probably trapped him ." " Is she seriously just standing there ?"

My fingers tighten around my champagne glass. My pulse pounds so loud I can barely think. Because if I take his hand now, theres no going back. This isnt just a gestureits a statement. A spotlight. A leap. And I feel every pair of eyes watching, waiting. Judging.

The pressure squeezes my ribs, wraps around my lungs like a vice. I could walk away. Protect us both. Disappear into the crowd like I always have.

But then I look at him. And the noise vanishes.

I take one step. Then another. I slide my fingers into his. The second our skin meets, time fracturesand everything else falls away.

" I love you too, Evan ," I whisper, breathless. "And Im done pretending I dont want this. I want you."

A stunned hush ripples through the room. The chandelier above us seems to tremble with the weight of what weve just become.

But I dont care. Because for the first time in my life, Im not hiding. Im done running. Im done fading. I choose him.

Evans POV

A slow smirk tugs at my mouth as her hand slips into mine. I knew shed come. She just needed the space to feel safe.

The room is electricbuzzing with whispers, scandal, and disbelief. Let them talk. Let them spin their stories. Because shes here. With me.

And tonight, thats all that matters.

I lead her to the stage, every step deliberate. My grip stays steady, protective. A promise without words.

I take the mic. My voice doesnt waver.

"This is Harper," I say. "Shes not just my assistant. Shes my girlfriend."

A collective jolt. Eyes widen. Mouths open. I go on. "And Im going to be a father."

The gasps returnlouder this time. A wave of shock crashing through marble and glass.

Langley clears his throat. "Evan, this is unexpected ."

I meet his gaze head-on. Calm. Cold. "Is it?"

A few nervous chuckles scatter across the room. Langley stiffens in his chair. Good.

I scan the crowd, my voice low but clear. "Ive heard the rumors. The whispers. The assumptions."

Silence tightens.

"But I dont deal in whispers . I deal in truth ."

I let that hang. Just long enough for the tension to crackle.

"This company was built on precision. Power. Unrelenting ambition. And from the moment I took the reins, I made one promiseto protect that legacy."

Langley shifts again. The room holds its breath.

"But what good is power," I continue, dropping my voice to a slow burn, "if you have no one to share it with?"

Their expressions flickerconfusion. Curiosity. Envy.

"Michaels Strategic Initiatives will keep leading . Keep dominating . Keep evolving ."

I let my gaze move across the board members, daring any of them to blink.

"But I wont be doing it alone."

I turn to Harper and gently rest my hand on her stomach. A hush crashes over the room like thunder.

She stiffens for half a secondjust enough for me to feel itthen exhales, steady and sure. I glance at her, and her eyes shimmer with something Ive never seen before. Peace . Shes not just accepting this moment. Shes owning it.

"Ive made more deals than I can count," I say, voice softening, "but this this is the one that finally means something."

Then I face the crowd again, eyes sharp. "And if anyone has a problem with that"

I pause. Let it sting.

" Theres the door ."

Langley exhales like hes been punched. Someone mutters a curse. But no one moves.

I smile. And this time, its real.

"As for my priorities?" I turn to Harper again, let the world see where I stand.

" My family ."

The crowd eruptsgasps, murmurs, flashbulbs, and a frenzy of reaction. But none of it touches me.

Harpers breath hitches softly beside me. I glance at her. Shes glowing.

And for the first time in my life, Im not playing a role. Im not hiding behind a title. Im just a man standing beside the woman who changed everything.
