20. Epilogue One Year Later #2

"There is no rush, Joan," Reiner said. "As I told you months ago, my love for you is not conditional on you becoming a mother.

If we decide to try for a child in the future, we will welcome that child with all our hearts.

If we decide that our life is complete just as we are, I will spend the rest of my days loving you with everything I have.

You are my wife, my partner, and my choice. That is more than enough."

Joan smiled. For twelve years, she had believed she needed to earn her place through competence and strength. Now she trusted that her presence was not a debt to be repaid.

At twilight, Reiner arranged an anniversary dinner on the sheltered terrace of their beach house.

A round table stood beneath glass lanterns, dressed in white linen, flowers, and silver. Below the deck, the tide murmured against the sand.

Joan wore an elegant midnight-blue silk dress that flowed gracefully around her ankles. Reiner wore a crisp white linen shirt with a tailored navy jacket.

They ate seafood and grilled vegetables with wine, talking about travel, Joan’s projects, and their neighbors’ mischievous dog. Nothing in the conversation required performance.

After dinner, Reiner set down his napkin and looked at Joan across the candlelight.

"One year ago today, you agreed to end our separation and let me back into your life," Reiner said, his voice deep and steady. "It was the greatest gift I have ever received, Joan. You gave me a chance to prove that a man can truly change if he is willing to face his own failures."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, familiar black velvet box.

Joan recognized the box, and her breath caught.

Reiner placed it between them without opening it or reaching for her hand.

"I have kept this since the night you placed it in my hand at the Loft Midtown Hotel," Reiner said. "I promised myself I would return it only when I knew I could offer the safe, loyal, honest love you deserved."

He waited without reaching for the box.

"I am giving this back to you, Joan," Reiner said. "I am not placing it on your finger. I am not asking you to wear it as a symbol of what used to be. The choice to wear it belongs entirely to you."

Joan reached across the table and opened the black velvet box.

Inside, resting on black satin, was her original platinum wedding ring. The clean, elegant band caught the warm light of the candle flames.

She picked up the ring. It felt cool and heavy in her fingers.

The ring had witnessed twelve years of ambition, a lost child, her sisters’ betrayal, and the moment Reiner chose flattery over trust.

Over twenty-one months, the ring had acquired a different meaning. It no longer represented quiet endurance. It represented truth spoken early, boundaries kept, and a marriage chosen with open eyes.

Joan met Reiner’s gaze and slid the platinum band onto her finger. It still fit perfectly.

"I choose to wear this ring, Reiner," Joan declared, her voice ringing clear and true across the quiet deck. "Not as a reminder of our old vows, but as a promise of the new ones we make every day. I promise to speak my truth without fear, to hold my boundaries firmly, and to love you as my equal."

A tear brightened Reiner’s eye as he kissed the band and then her knuckles.

"And I promise to honor your truth, to guard your heart before my own pride, and to choose you above every other voice in the world for as long as I live," Reiner whispered devotedly.

Later that night, the moonlight poured through the high windows of the master bedroom, casting long, silver beams across the soft white sheets. The distant sound of the ocean waves created a soothing rhythm in the warm room.

Joan stood near the edge of the large bed, her midnight-blue dress slipping to the floor as she stepped out of it.

The silk pooled around her ankles like spilled ink.

She wore nothing beneath it. The cool night air kissed her bare skin, raising a soft shiver along her arms and the delicate curve of her spine.

Reiner stood before her with his shirt open, his attention fixed on her. Over the past year, their physical relationship had been rebuilt at the pace of Joan’s readiness. He waited now as he had learned to wait—with desire, but without assumption.

She stepped closer, reaching up to rest her palms against the warm, broad expanse of his chest. She could feel the steady, rapid beat of his heart beneath her fingertips. The heat of him soaked into her skin.

“Joan,” Reiner whispered, his hands framing her waist. Tenderness showed in every line of his face as his thumbs traced circles just above the flare of her hips.

“I am here, Reiner,” Joan murmured, kissing the firm line of his jaw and tasting the faint salt of his skin. “All of me.”

Reiner drew her close and kissed her with a hunger held in check by attention. Joan answered without hesitation, heat gathering low in her belly as his body hardened against hers. Even then, he waited for her to lead.

Joan pushed his shirt from his shoulders and pressed herself against his bare chest. Her nipples tightened at the contact. Reiner cupped her ass and lifted her just enough for his erection to press against the sensitive place between her thighs.

“Bed,” she whispered against his lips.

He guided her backward until her knees met the mattress, and they sank onto the cool white sheets. Moonlight silvered her bare body as his free hand traced the curve of her breast, the dip of her waist, and the swell of her hip. Every touch waited for her response.

Joan unfastened his trousers and pushed them down with his underwear. She wrapped her fingers around the thick heat of him and stroked once from base to tip. Reiner exhaled roughly and lowered his forehead to hers.

“Joan—”

“I want you,” she said, voice steady and clear. “All of you. No holding back.”

He kissed her again as his hand slipped between her thighs. She was wet and ready, and the first stroke over her clit lifted her hips from the bed. He circled the swollen bud, watching her face, then eased two fingers inside her until her head fell back with a broken sound.

“You’re so beautiful like this,” Reiner murmured against her throat. “Open for me. Trusting me.”
