9. Epilogue
Spencer
Six months later
“It's here! The package is here!”
My wife streaks by me in a blur of long raven hair and pink streaks, throwing open the front door to snatch up a package from the front porch.
“Need a box knif—?” I guess not. She's already ripped open the box, packing tape waving on a torn cardboard flap, and pulled out the colorful paperback. Her first romance novel.
Avery's eyes mist as she holds it up proudly. “I know it's not going to be a bestseller or anything, but this is the start.”
It's not the book she was writing when we met. She calls that her practice book. It was good, but this is better. As her skills grow, I have no doubt she'll earn that bestseller banner. If not this book, then one in the near future.
I gather her into my arms and press a kiss to her temple. “Congratulations, sweetheart. We should celebrate.”
Avery presses her palm to her lower belly, where she's just starting to show with our first child. Being a father at almost forty-one freaked me out a little at first. But I will give my wife and child every moment of every day I have left.
“The champagne will have to wait. Maybe we can find another way to celebrate.”
I take the book and set it on the table by the door, then lift her into my arms and carry her upstairs. “We can celebrate and drum up inspiration for the book you're writing.”
She giggles and kisses my neck. “It's about a silver fox who falls for his brand new assistant who's far younger. Readers love an age gap romance.”
“So do I.”
“I owe Grandma Dottie everything for bringing us together,” she says.
I groan. “Please do not tell her that. I heard her on the phone yesterday talking about some sort of matchmaking grannies club.” Dottie couldn't stay retired for long and grew bored with cruising. She's back to working as my secretary, giving my wife ample time to follow her dream.
Avery laughs. “I won't tell Anson.”
Laying her on the bed, I kiss her sweet lips. “I love you, Avery. Now show me what a good girl you can be.”
I hope you enjoyed Spencer and Avery's story!
