28. Elena
Elena
Imake it as far as the hotel before I turn around.
The suitcase remains in the trunk. The Positano photograph sits on the passenger seat, his hand at my waist and my face lifted toward his as if I have never doubted where I belong.
I am furious with that woman.
I am more furious with the one driving back to him.
Adrian opens the estate door before I knock. He has removed his jacket and tie. The top buttons of his shirt are open, exposing the place where I pressed my palm during our fight.
He looks at my empty hands. “Did you forget something?”
“Yes.”
Hope is dangerous on his face. I step inside before it can stop me.
“This is not forgiveness.”
His eyes darken. “I understand.”
“This is not reconciliation.”
“I understand that too.”
“I want you.” The admission burns all the way out. “Tonight. Nothing after.”
Adrian’s breath changes, but he does not touch me. “Are you certain?”
“Ask me again and I will leave.”
“Then tell me what you want.”
Not come upstairs. Not the old palm at my back guiding me through the house as if desire has only one familiar route. He waits in the foyer, hands at his sides, while I decide what happens next.
I take him to the library.
The brass lamp is still on. It throws warm light across the sofa where I once slept with my head in his lap while he read contracts. Adrian reaches for the switch.
“Leave it.”
His hand drops.
I move close enough to feel the heat of him through his shirt. “Look at me.”
“I am.”
“No closed eyes. No darkness. You do not get to imagine. You do not get to forget.”
Pain flickers beneath the desire. “I know who you are.”
“Say it.”
“Elena.”
The sound of my name in his ruined voice sends heat straight between my thighs.
I kiss him.
There is nothing gentle in it. I fist his shirt and take his mouth like I can recover every kiss he gave away. Adrian lets me. He does not seize control or turn me against the nearest wall. His hands remain open beside my hips until I bite his lower lip hard enough to make him groan.
“Touch me.”
His palms settle at my waist.
“My name.”
“Elena.”
I kiss him again, deeper, tasting coffee and restraint and the sharp edge of the man who once thought he could replace me with my own face.
When his tongue meets mine, my body answers with humiliating speed.
I yank his shirt free of his trousers and open the remaining buttons, exposing the hard planes I have touched in darkness hundreds of times.
Tonight I watch.
I watch the pulse jump in his throat when I drag my mouth along his jaw.
I watch his fingers flex against my waist because he wants to grip harder and is waiting for permission.
This is the same body that used to turn toward mine in sleep, the same scar beneath his ribs that I traced on our honeymoon, the same man and not the same man at all.
Recognition makes desire crueler. Every intimate detail survived even when trust did not.
I drag my nails down his chest. His stomach tightens. His cock presses hard against me through his trousers, thick and insistent enough to make my knees weaken.
“Tell me who is touching you.”
“My wife.”
I go still.
Adrian’s hands loosen immediately. “Elena?—”
“Do not call me that.”
“You are still my wife.”
“Not here. Not tonight.” I grip his jaw, forcing his eyes to stay on mine. “Who is touching you?”
His gaze does not leave mine. “Elena is.”
“Who do you want?”
“Elena.”
“Who did you betray?”
The question cuts through both of us.
“Elena.”
I unfasten his belt and shove his trousers and underwear down just far enough.
His cock springs free, heavy and flushed.
I close my hand around him and stroke once, slow and tight.
Adrian’s forehead drops toward mine, but he keeps his eyes open exactly as I ordered. A rough sound tears from his throat.
“Elena—”
“Quiet.”
I stroke him again, watching every loss of control cross his face. The vein along the underside throbs against my palm. Precome beads at the tip. I smear it with my thumb and he shudders.
He reaches beneath my dress. His fingers stop at the edge of my underwear.
“May I?”
The question almost undoes me.
I nod.
“Say it,” he whispers.
“Yes.”
His fingers slide beneath the lace and find me soaked. The first stroke makes me gasp. The second makes my hips chase his hand. He circles my clit with the exact pressure he has always known I need, and for one dangerous second I almost let him take over.
I push his hand away before the rhythm becomes familiar.
“Sofa.”
He sits. I remove my underwear but leave the dress on—another deliberate denial of the rituals that once made this feel like home. Adrian reaches for the zipper at my back.
“No.”
His hand falls.
I straddle him, knees bracketing his hips, and take him inside me in one slow, deliberate sink.
The first stretch steals my breath. He is thick and hot and devastatingly familiar. Adrian grips the sofa cushion hard enough that the leather creaks, every muscle rigid beneath me as he forces himself to stay still.
“Touch me,” I order.
His hands close around my hips.
I move.
Slow at first, forcing him to watch my face while I take what I came for. His mouth opens. My name breaks from him on every downward slide.
“Who am I?”
“Elena.”
I rise and sink harder, rolling my hips so the head of his cock drags against the place inside me that makes my vision spark.
“Again.”
“Elena—fuck?—”
His thumb finds my clit between our bodies. Pleasure climbs too fast, sharpened by anger and history and the terrible knowledge that no one will ever understand my body the way this man does.
I hate him for it.
I ride him harder, using him, taking my pleasure with zero gentleness. The wet sound of it fills the library. The lamp throws gold across the flex of his throat, the open collar of his shirt, the desperate set of his mouth as he fights not to close his eyes.
“Do not look away,” I gasp.
“Never again.”
The promise pushes me over the edge. I come with my eyes locked on his, his name trapped behind my teeth until my body tears it free in a broken cry.
“Ian—”
His face breaks.
He follows with a guttural groan of my name, hips jerking up hard, holding my hips so tightly I will carry the shape of his fingers tomorrow. The heat of him spilling inside me is filthy and intimate and exactly what I told myself I would not feel.
For several seconds neither of us moves. My forehead rests against his. Our breathing fills the library, intimate and familiar enough to frighten me.
The old ending waits for us. He would carry me upstairs. I would curl against his side with one cold foot between his calves. Morning would soften whatever we refused to name, and sex would become another elegant cover laid over the fracture.
I will not give us that lie.
Adrian’s hand slides up my back, tender now.
I climb off him before the tenderness can settle.
“Elena.”
He reaches for me—not with hunger this time, but with the quiet need to hold what he just lost again.
I step beyond his hand and pull my dress into place. His come slides down the inside of my thigh, warm and damning. I do not clean it away.
“My body remembering you is not the same as my heart trusting you.”
His arm drops.
“I know.”
This time he sounds like he does.
I leave him beneath the library lamp with his trousers open, his chest still heaving, and the taste of my name still in his mouth.
I do not look back.
