Chapter 70

"Harrison, you're awake!" Tears of joy streamed down Harper's cheeks but Harrison frowned upon seeing them. Had someone bullied her when he was in a coma? Just let him get discharged, he was going to make sure they all suffer a hundredfold!

"Harper, what happened? Why are you crying? Did someone bully you in my absence? Let me know the person's name, I'll make sure he suffers!" Harper smiled as she sniffled and wiped her tears with her sleeve. This guy's really funny, he just woke up from a coma and was already talking about making people suffer. "You idiot, these are happy tears!" "Happy tears, what are those?" Harrison remembered the time when he was little. His mom would look at him sometimes and cry. If he asked her what was going on, she'd say she was fine and that they were just happy tears. He was getting confused. Were they some part of ladies' crying routine? Harper saw the look of confusion evident in Harrison's eyes and couldn't help but laugh. How could he not know what happy tears are? "It’s when you’re so relieved, so overwhelmed… that your heart doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so it does both" "You're happy I woke up?"

"Of course I am. You scared me half to death, and then you left me with that voicemail like it was the end"

Harrison turned his head away from her gaze "I didn’t think I deserved to wake up next to you after everything I put you through" Harper gently turned his head back to her side "You saved me. Even after everything. You still chose me. That voicemail broke me… but it also showed me how much you loved me, even when I didn’t want to believe it"

"I still love you. That hasn’t changed" "Then maybe… we can start over. No more lies. No more secrets. Just you and me. Okay?"

"Okay… but only if you explain more weird things like 'happy tears' I think I’ve missed a lot"

"Deal. But only if you promise not to jump in front of any more trucks" "No promises. You’re kind of hard to stay away from"

Harper spoke in a low voice

"You think I didn’t love you, but I did. Even when I was angry. Even when I swore I’d never forgive you. I loved you through every tear, through every lie. I just didn’t know how to admit it… not even to myself"

"You… you really loved me?" "Still do. So much it terrifies me. And when you almost died—I realized I’d rather be hurt by the truth than live without you."

"Then I guess I have to live. For you. For us."

Harper leaned forward and slowly wrapped her arms around Harrison; afraid to hurt him but unable to stay away from him anymore. He also wraps his arms around her to some extent. They stayed like that in silence for a while before she pulled away with a soft gasp "I should go get the doctor, they need to know you're awake"

She made to stand up but he stopped her by holding her hand. "I don't need the doctor, I only need you. Would you please stay with me?" Harper couldn't resist Harrison's eyes that seemed to beg her so she sat back down and entwined her fingers with his. "Don't worry, I won't go anywhere"

A soft voice was heard in the doorway and the couple turned their heads to see Harrison's grandma and sister standing at the door "My tough little grandson is awake uh?" Harrison smiled and shrugged "Couldn't bear to leave you guys behind" "Well then the next time you do such a thing, I'm going to give you an earful" Harper stood up nervously "I'm sorry, he said not to get the doctor-" "What matters is that you stayed by his side all this time" "Mr Whitney-" "Please, call me grandpa" Harper looked at Harrison and he smiled before nodding. Harper looked back at Alfred "Yes grandpa!" "That's my girl!"
