Chapter 5
Finn
“E arth to Finn,” Eli’s voice finally registers in my brain. “You there, bro?”
“Ya. I think so.”
It’s Monday morning. I’m back at the firehall, in body. In spirit, I’m reliving the last two days of being in bed with Kenzie. I lost track of the number of orgasms we gave each other. Best weekend of my life.
I know she’s the one for me. Not sure that she knows that yet, as I didn’t want to scare her off. But I’ll tell her soon. Neither of us wanted to weigh down the weekend with any heavy talk. We basically ate and had sex for the last forty-eight hours. Oh ya, and slept a little, too.
“So what’s going on between you and Kenzie?” Sinking into the chair on the other side of my new desk, he makes himself comfortable. Eli is the best twin brother a guy could ask for. We’ve pulled off so many pranks and laughed our asses off. Sure, we nearly killed Rhett this summer, but he’s forgiven us for that. And from what I hear, it’s a huge part of the reason he and Sawyer even got together. So…really, he should be thanking us.
Eli and I have always been close, so we knew that we didn’t want to let Summer come between us, even though for the first time we both found ourselves interested in the same woman. Of course, that quickly evaporated on my end. Hence him sitting here questioning me.
“About that…”
He chuckles. “Not after Summer anymore I take it?”
“Not in the slightest. She’s all yours.”
“Thanks, man. But I don’t think there was much competition between the two of us.”
“Right. Keep telling yourself that Twinnifer.”
After a second chuckle at the stupid moniker I gave him, he prods again. “You gonna explain the Kenzie thing? I knew you had a thing for her, but I thought that was over.”
“It’s a thing again.” Bigger than ever. “We’re still figuring out exactly what we are now, but I’m not letting her go.”
“Good for you, Twinderella. It’s about time you came to your senses. She’s only been sitting right in front of your nose for how long now?”
“Don’t remind me.”
“You should have asked her out earlier.”
“I’m kicking myself. Trust me. What about you and Summer then?”
“It’s hardly been a month that she’s been here.” Eli sighs.
“But…”
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I really li—”
A knock at the door prevents him from finishing that thought, but I’m pretty sure I know how he feels about her. They hit it off instantly. Like insta-besties. Of course he wants more than that though.
“Am I interrupting?” Kenzie pops her head around the door.
“Not at all. Just talking about you actually.” Kenzie’s blush reaches her ears as Eli winks at me. “I’ll let you two be.” Eli moves to the door in an escape, but not before he puts his hands on Kenzie’s shoulder and tells her that if I don’t treat her right she just needs to let him know.
Ha. As if I’d even consider doing wrong by her. She’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.
“What’s up, Kenzie?” I can’t help the playful grin that’s tugging on my lips.
“So…this is a bit awkward…”
“Not at all.” Okay. A little. But mostly because I want to bend her over my desk.
“Chief said that you were the one I had to talk to about this.”
“About what?” I have no clue what she’s referring to, but I can sense the nerves. Anyone with eyes would be able to see it though because she’s clasping and unclasping her hands in her lap. Slipping a strand of hair behind her ear, she finally looks up at me.
“Okay. You have to understand that I didn’t know this last week.”
“What are you talking about, Kenzie?”
“I’m applying for the Community Outreach Liaison job.”
“Okay?”
“And you’re the one who decides who gets the position. I don’t want people to think…things.” With that little tidbit, she folds her hands in her lap again, letting the pieces settle where they may.
It takes me a second, but ya…right about now it hits me. This is slightly more complicated than it should be. But not too convoluted. First layer: she wants a job. Second layer: I decide if she gets the job. But, third layer, we’re sleeping together now.
“I get it.” Leaning back in my chair, I ask, “Well, do you think you’d be good at the job?”
“I’d be the best at it. You know me and safety.”
“I do…”
“And I’d love to make sure other people are being safe in their homes, at work, and really everywhere.” Her face lights up when she talks about safety. She’s fucking adorable.
“And I’m super organized. So managing the logistics wouldn’t be a problem.”
“I doubt it would be.” But then an added layer of complication strikes. “What about the public speaking? At the highschool and all the other events?”
She shrugs. “I’d…um…just figure that part out.”
Shit. That’s a huge part of the job. And now things really are muddy. She wants a job that only I can give her, but I don’t know if she’s the right person for it. I’ve just been given my new position and I’m trying to prove to everyone that I’m not just a prankster. That yes, I can be taken seriously. I can’t just promote my girlfriend (question mark on that label, but we’ll come back to that later) for the first open position at the firehall. Especially if she might not even be good at half of the job.
Son of a monkey.
“I get it,” she hangs her head. “No. I totally get it, Finn. You don’t have to say anything.”
But I do. I have to say so many things. I just don’t know how to get the words out.
