Chapter 29

Holly

As soon as the sub shows up and I give her all of my lesson plans for the rest of today and tomorrow, I all but run for my car.

Rummaging through my purse, I find a cherry hard candy and pop it into my mouth to quell the queasiness and drive straight to the store doing math in my head the whole way.

I don’t think I missed any pills or was super late taking them.

I am in my sugar pill row, and even though it is later in the week than I’m used to starting, it has happened before.

Perhaps I’m just getting PMS queasy and not pregnant queasy. That’s happened before too. Well, not the pregnant queasy part… No, it’s unlikely. My last period was super light though. More like I just spotted for a few days instead of bleeding.

There’s no way, right? I timidly walk down the local pharmacy aisles a few minutes from home, trying to find the right section.

I hardly come to this one. My stomach sinks again, and I blow a slow breath through my lips as I reach the test aisle and look at my choices.

A double pack ends up in my basket as I round the corner and head toward the front of the store.

Suddenly parched, I grab a bottle of water, hey going to have to piss on the sticks anyway, then pay through the self-checkout so that I don’t have to get a look from a cashier as my bare ring finger is eyeballed.

I know, in reality, I shouldn’t give a flying fuck what a stranger thinks, but it’s just kind of ingrained in my brain to go there. I pay, then crack the cap of my drink, taking a long swig as I walk to my SUV.

Buzz.

Jaxon: Hope you are having a great day so far. I was thinking of you while sitting here with a turkey sandwich and a bunch of charts.

Me: It is going. Heading home, actually. I think I’ve got a bug. I hope you don’t get sick.

Jaxon: What’s going on?

Me: Every bit of my graham crackers this morning decided to make an appearance…

Jaxon: I’m sorry, babe. I’ll bring you soup after work and check on you. Lots of fluids. Fever?

Me: No, Dr. Reyes.

Jaxon: Just checking… See you in a bit.

Me: If I’m a puking mess, you are not walking into my house.

Jaxon: Watch me.

Me: Sigh…

I set the phone down and chug the rest of my bottle during the short drive, eyeing the white bag in my passenger seat the whole way.

???

Jaxon

I twiddle my pen as I finally finish up the charts I started during my lunch break. A knock on the door snags my attention.

“Come in.”

“Dr. Reyes, your first afternoon appointment is in room three. Oh, and your last appointment canceled, so you have a shot at getting out of here early today.” The bubbly brunette nurse, Lindsey, smiles, opening the temporary chart in her hand to get it ready for me.

She rattles off what’s going on with the patient as she hands it over.

All of this stuff will need to be entered into our system, but since it’s a new patient, we start old school.

I miss paper most days. It felt more personal, and you got to talk to the patient more.

All the computer charts make it feel cold, but it is more efficient in the long run, I get it.

At least with this position, I get to use it a little more, whereas in the ER, it was mostly just computer tapping.

“Thanks, Linz. We’re happy you got the open position. How are you liking the change so far?”

“I like that I won’t have to work any more seconds and thirds, that’s for sure. I will miss the babies, and some colleagues, but I’ll still get to see them around.”

“I get it. I’m still not used to a normal schedule either. I think it’ll take a while to get out of residency-mode. Anyway, we’re glad to have you with us.”

“Thanks.”

The door clicks shut, and I straighten my things up and close charts as I wonder what kind of virus my girl has managed to catch.

She works with enough little gremlins to bring an army down with a sneeze, so it’s anyone’s guess.

I’m hoping my month off didn’t cause my immunity levels to tank.

I’d really rather not have to call in sick yet, but it’ll be what it’ll be.

Tugging at my tie to straighten it, I step out of the office while glancing at the chart she handed me. Only a few more patients.

???

A little past five-thirty, I pull up to Holly’s seaside home with some hot chicken and gnocchi soup from Marcketti’s.

Mark’s mom really is a gem, and I can totally see her in both him and Brynleigh.

I snort to myself. Okay, mostly Brynleigh.

Mark’s a pretty great guy though, once you get past the cocky exterior.

From what I’ve gathered, he’s toned it down quite a bit over the past year or so.

Holly left the door unlocked for me, so I let myself in.

“Hol, I come bearing soup!” I announce, listening to the house for any sign of life.

Wandering down the hall to the back bedrooms, I find her curled up in bed, sleeping.

I walk back to the kitchen to grab a spoon and a Sprite from the fridge.

Hopefully it’ll help settle her stomach if she’s still feeling queasy.

Sitting on the bed softly, I pull some hair from her forehead and rub a cheek.

She doesn’t feel feverish, so that’s good.

“Hey, sleepyhead. You up for some food?” I say quietly enough not to startle her, but loud enough to help wake her up. She takes in a deep breath, rousing at the sound of my voice.

“What did you bring?”

“Sprite along with some chicken and gnocchi soup from Mark’s mom.”

“Bless your soul, that sounds amazeballs right now.”

I chuckle because that is just soooo Holly.

“How are you feeling?”

“Much better. Just occasional queasiness. No more throwing up, no fevers, no snot. I expected more of the latter considering who I work with. I still wouldn’t kiss me, just in case.”

That earns another laugh from me.

“Noted. I’m glad it’s not worse either.”

“Yeah,” she trails off, reaching over to the bedside to grab her to-go container of soup. I hand her the spoon, watching those pretty golden brown waves bounce around her shoulders as she breathes in the aroma. “Thank you, Jax.”

“Welcome, hun. Want me to stay in case you need me later?”

Holly shakes her head no as she slides the first spoonful into her mouth.

“Uh-uh. Nope. You have patients, and if this is something gnarly, I will not be responsible for you taking it to them. I’ve probably already exposed you enough.”

“It will be the first time, but it won’t be the last time you get me sick.”

“I really don’t want you to see me throw up.”

“Do you forget how we met?”

“No, I doubt I will ever forget one of my besties telling you about my monster cock toy on the dresser.”

“Hmm, yes.” I chuckle. “That was hands down the best meet cute I’ve ever participated in. I remember wondering how monsterish this cock was and how tightly it fit. Had me struggling for a good minute, that’s for sure.”

Holly looks to the ceiling, reminiscing about her mortification. Her face that day had been absolutely priceless. She hadn’t been able to catch a break, and when I’d overheard them calling me Dr. Sexy… Icing on the cake.

“You will never let me live it down.”

“I’m still just waiting for that bad boy to make a shower appearance.”

“That one did have a suction cup on the bottom, didn’t it?” She looks up all doe-eyed at me, and I have to remind myself she’s sick. I gulp.

“Uh-huh,” I answer, inwardly counting to twenty.

“Maybe soon.”

My dick jumps with excitement at all the ideas it has about getting her in the shower with that thing.

We haven’t really had a whole lot of time to explore and play yet, and my dick knows this.

It’s always ravenous for my beauty. I tell it to shut the fuck up in my brain because right now is really just not the freaking time. Hopefully, she’s better in a few days.

Holly’s eyes glance at my tight slacks before rolling back up to mine with a mischievous glint. The left corner of her lips turns up.

“As you can tell, I’m a bit excited about that prospect. We, um, haven’t had a whole lot of time to just explore yet.”

“I’ll be better soon.”

I blow out a slow breath and rise from the mattress. There’s no hiding my situation, but sitting that close to her is always going to get a reaction from me.

“I better get going then. I’ll keep my phone turned up in case you need me. What else do you want me to grab for you before I go?”

“Maybe a water and a book from my shelf?”

“On it. Book request?”

“One that looks and sounds smutty.”

I look down at my cock, easy killer, then look back up at Holly and beg for mercy with my eyes.

“What? If I’m not getting any, might as well read about somebody else getting railed into next week.”

“If? Woman, you are testing me. I can flip you over on your hands and knees in two seconds if you give me the word.”

“Nah, a book will suffice.”

“Of course it will.” I roll my eyes heavenward and march my horny ass into the kitchen. With a bottle of water and the smuttiest book I could see on her shelf, Insatiable by Leigh Rivers, I deliver them to her with a sigh and a kiss on the forehead.

“Thank you so much. I’ve been dying to read this one. I hear it’s going to simultaneously make me sweat and tear my heart to shreds.”

“What the fuck?”

“The best books are the ones that make you feel all the emotions.”

“Okay, whatever you say, Sweetheart.”

“Ugh.” She sighs, and I cock a questioning glance her way. “Don’t pull out the ‘Sweetheart’ card then leave me.”

“You have your book now.”

“Touchè…”

“No worries. I’ll be bending you over and stuffing you with my cock and that monster cock toy of yours soon enough.”

She gulps. I smile wolfishly.

“At the same time?”

My turn to gulp.

“Is that an option?”

“Maybe.”

“Ah, hell, I need to leave, like, right now.”

Holly tosses her head back and laughs hard, the sound music to my ears and another zing to my dick.

“Bye, Jax. Thank you.”

I grunt in answer, then turn and holler over my shoulder as I force myself to leave.

“Bye, Sweetheart.”

Yeah, she’s in for my ideas as soon as she gets better, the little wench. My little wench.
