Chapter 28
LET”S CUT THE BULLSH*T
Rebel Pierce
Charlotte FBI Field Office
I huffed in annoyance as Agent Revels and Monroe handed me off to a younger agent, who then hurriedly guided me into an interrogation room at the Charlotte’s FBI Field Office. Although my godfather ran the place, this was my first time stepping foot into one of the interrogation rooms.
The small room had the same sterile atmosphere as a police station, with its bare walls and lack of personal touches. The room was furnished with the usual uncomfortable metal chairs and a table, while the scent of cigarette smoke, cleaning chemicals, and stale coffee permeated the air. Despite not being claustrophobic, the nauseous smell and cramped size of the room made me uncertain of how long I could tolerate being inside before feeling overwhelmed and panicked.
“Someone will be here to speak with you in a moment,” the agent said. “Have a seat.”
After he shut the door behind him, I blew out a breath. “Shit must be bad,” I muttered as I took my seat at the table in the center of the small room. “I guess it’s a good sign I’m not in handcuffs.”
As I sat at the cool metal table, my fingers nervously tapped out a rhythm. As I waited for someone to come in and explain the situation, the sound reverberated off the stark white concrete walls. Although I knew it had to do with J.D., I didn’t actually know what they needed to speak to me about. I’d already told them it was none of their damn business who I had in my apartment. And even though it was J.D., it wasn’t against the law to have him as a friend or even date him.
Unless they saw Detective Abrams enter my building but never leave. Fuck, I hope that’s not it.
I jumped when the door opened, then rolled my eyes when Agent Revels stepped into the room alone and shut the door behind him. I was so fucking tired of dealing with him.
“Where’s Agent Monroe?” I asked, leaning back in my chair glaring at him.
I really didn’t care where she was. I just didn’t like Agent Revels and preferred not to be in the same room with him alone.
Agent Revels tossed a manila file folder on the table then took the seat in front of me. “She had something else she needed to take care of. So, you’re stuck with me, Ms. Pierce.”
“Great,” I said with as much sarcasm as I could muster.
Frustration flickered in his eyes as he rubbed his hand over his face.
Despite his asshole demeanor, Agent Revels was a very nice-looking man with chiseled features. If my mother had met him, she would have instantly seen him as the perfect match for me. The tall, dark, and handsome type. With a muscular frame, tawny skin, dark hair, and eyes, the navy suit tailored to his body only increased his attractiveness. But there was just something I did not like about him, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. And it wasn’t because he was an asshole. I dealt with those types of people daily. There was something else, and it really annoyed the hell out of me that I couldn’t put my finger on it.
I delved into his financials, background, and work history, but nothing remarkable caught my attention except for his determination to take down Demons United. I had noticed that he had been relentlessly pursuing Demons United for a considerable amount of time, but nothing ever stuck. Which made me think, I might need to go a little deeper with Agent Revels. He was hiding something, and it had something to do with Demons United.
I learned J.D. and his motorcycle club weren’t just your run-of-the-mill biker gang. They were a highly organized criminal organization, not that much different from the mafia. And it would be hard for any law enforcement agency to get them on anything unless someone infiltrated them.
“You seem to spend a lot of time with J.D. Stevens, Ms. Pierce.”
He opened his folder, revealing a photograph that he pulled out. I glanced at the picture then looked back at him. It was of me entering J.D.’s home. A day I remembered very well because J.D. gave me the best orgasm of my life.
I kept my gaze fixed on Agent Revels as he slid the photograph towards me. I remained calm and kept my attention focused on him. He looked up from the folder and arched his brow, but I remained silent and waited for him to make his move.
“What is your relationship with J.D. Stevens, Ms. Pierce?”
“That’s none of your business Agent. Like I’ve already told you, who I spend my time with is not your concern.”
“It is if it involves a man like Stevens.”
I didn’t respond to that because no matter how much he asked he wasn’t getting any information about my relationship. It was none of his business.
He stared at me for a moment then passed me another picture. Again, I didn’t look down at it.
“Do you know who this man is?” he asked, pointing at the picture.
I rolled my eyes again, then looked down at the photograph of Detective Abrams, entering my building. I looked back at Agent Revels.
“No, I do not. Who is he?” I asked, hoping I was a good fucking actress because if they pieced together what happened in my apartment, we were all up shit creek without a paddle.
“Ms. Pierce, we have photographs of J.D. Stevens and some of the members of Demons United entering your building not too long after this man entered.”
I wanted to ask why he believed the man entered my apartment, but I chose not to because I was always taught if you didn’t want to hear the answer never ask the question.
“Okay. I’m not following you, Agent.”
“This man didn’t leave the building, and neither did the members of Demons United. At least not through the front.”
“That may be the case, but I’m still not following you Agent Revels. What does this have to do with me?”
The force of his palm hitting the table reverberated in the room, causing me to squint at him.
“Let’s cut the bullshit, Ms. Pierce! We know there was a disturbance at your residence. Tell me what happened.”
“If you know that much, Agent Revels, I’m sure you received the police report saying the police contacted me. Is that right?”
“I’m asking the questions, Ms. Pierce,” he said, ignoring my question. “Now answer me! What happened at your apartment between this man,” he pointed at the picture, “and J.D. Stevens?”
“You’ve read the report. You know what happened at my apartment, Agent. And once again, I don’t know who that man is.”
“And I’m telling you, that’s absolute bullshit!”
“What do you have against Demons United, Agent?” I asked as calmly as I could. He wanted information from me maybe I should get some from him. “Better yet, what do you have against J.D.?”
Something flickered in his eyes, and I knew immediately I had hit a nerve. I needed to dig deeper. Agent Revels was hiding something, and it had to do with J.D. and Demons United. However, before he could respond to my question, the door opened and in walked my godfather.
“Oh fuck.”
He was the last person I wanted to see and by the look on his face he was fucking pissed I was in this room.
“Can you give us a minute, Agent Revels?” he asked.
“But Sir...”
“It wasn’t a request, Agent.” He glared at Agent Revels. “Give me the room.”
My godfather had a commanding presence. His six-foot five frame towered over many men. He also had that look that said don’t fuck with me and we won’t have any problems. He’d been in law enforcement for as long as I could remember. And while he was my godfather, I considered him my uncle.
As Agent Revels left the room, I could feel the weight of his glare lingering in the air.
“Why did you let them bring me in, Uncle Donald?” I asked when he took the seat across from me. “I haven’t done anything wrong.”
He sighed. “What did I tell you Rebel when you called me?”
“I know, Uncle! But I’m not involved in anything!”
Not the complete truth but he didn’t need to know to what extent I was involved with J.D. and the death of his wife.
“Then tell me why you’re all over my surveillance records, Rebel?”
“I’m working, just like I told you. It has nothing to do with the FBI unless you have crooked agents?”
He arched his brow. “Do you know something, I don’t?”
“Of course not. But you know how I work and right now if feels like your agents are trying to stop me from uncovering information. It’s like I said, I’m working.”
“And what you’re working on has something to do with J.D. Stevens?”
“I can’t speak about that.”
He leaned forward, planting his forearms on the table. “Goddamn it, Rebel! Give me something. I’ve got an agent that swears you’re involved with Demons United. A fucking motorcycle gang.”
I was involved with the president of Demons United, but for now, I think it was best to keep that information to myself.
“And you also have an agent who has a vendetta, Uncle. Maybe you should look into why.”
“What do you know?” he asked again, leaning back in his chair.
“Nothing yet,” I said. “But there’s something there and I’m going to find it.”
“You’re treading on thin ice, Rebel. You need to be careful.”
“I’m always careful, Uncle.” I stood. “Just make sure when I find what I’m looking for your ass is covered. Am I free to go?”
He locked eyes with me for a brief moment before giving a subtle nod.
I walked around the table and embraced him. “Keep your eyes open. Agent Revels is not someone you can trust,” I whispered in his ear then kissed him on the cheek. “Love you.”
I opened the door and walked out. My apartment was the next stop before heading to Demons United’s clubhouse. I needed to get to work to find out the connection between Agent Revels and Demons United. And I needed to find out if it had anything to do with Dani’s death. My gut was telling me it was possible but whatever it was it had one agent trying to bring the entire force of the FBI down on them.
