Chapter 36

HAVE YOU HEARD FROM HIM?

Rebel Pierce

I paced the living room at the clubhouse, while everyone looked at me like I was crazy, or like I was about to lose it. The guys didn’t know why I was so upset J.D. wasn’t here and the women who frequented the place couldn’t care less. They just didn’t understand why I was still at the clubhouse and wanted to know more about our relationship.

He had slipped out of bed this morning before the sun had even come up. I was scared he was doing something foolish because what other reason would he have to leave the clubhouse without anyone knowing where he was going.

We came back to the clubhouse instead of staying at his home. Even though we fucked until we couldn’t anymore, I still didn’t feel comfortable having sex with him in their bedroom and I think he knew it. So, I was grateful when he mentioned us staying at the clubhouse.

J.D. decided that what we had learned from Dani’s journal needed to be kept between us. He didn’t even want to let Caesar in on the new information we had. I didn’t question him when he asked me to keep it between us, but I should have. He wanted to confront Agent Revels on his own which wasn’t a good idea because I didn’t know if J.D. could control his anger. I hoped that wasn’t but why would he sneak out?

“Have you heard from him?” I asked Caesar again.

I didn’t know how many times I’d asked him since I went looking for J.D. this morning when I woke up in bed alone. But each time I asked I hoped Caesar would have a different answer.

He shook his head. “No. His phone is going straight to voicemail.”

“Shit!”

This was not good.

“What’s going on Rebel?” Caesar asked with his brow arched. “If he’s in trouble, I need to know so I can help him.”

I stopped pacing. “I don’t know if he’s in trouble or not, Caesar.”

“But you’re acting like he is,” Rumi said.

It was the first time she’d said anything since I went to find Caesar. I didn’t ask her what she was doing sneaking out of his room this morning. But I would definitely get to that later once I found out if J.D. was okay.

“I’m sure he’s okay.” I plopped down on the couch. I just would like to know where he was at. “He had a very rough day yesterday. I’m just worried about him. That’s all.”

“What happened yesterday?” Caesar asked.

A door slamming and J.D. stalking into the living room like he wanted to kill someone pulled Caesar’s attention away from me. I felt relieved that I didn’t have to answer his question, knowing that it wasn’t my place to share J.D.’s personal matters.

“Church in twenty minutes!” J.D. shouted. “I want everyone here! I don’t give a fuck what they’re doing. Tell them they better drop that shit and get here now!”

Caesar’s brows bunched in confusion as he watched J.D. disappear down the hallway towards his office. The door slammed closed, and Caesar looked at me like I had some idea of what was going on.

“I’m going to check on him,” I said, standing.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Rebel,” Caesar said. “I’ve known J.D. a long time and when he gets like this, it’s best if you leave him alone for a little while.”

“I really don’t care if he’s in a fucking mood, Caesar.”

He chuckled. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Frustrated, I rolled my eyes then walked towards J.D.’s office. When I reached the door, I knocked and pushed it open not waiting for him to say come in. I didn’t care if he didn’t want to see me or anybody else. He was going to tell me why he slipped out of bed this morning and where he disappeared to.

I closed the door behind me, then locked it so we wouldn’t be disturbed. He looked up at me with this blank stare like he was a million miles away, not sitting in this office with me. I slowly walked to him, and he kept his eyes on me like a predator stalking his prey.

“Where were you?” I asked as I slid onto his lap.

He didn’t stop me as I ran my hand through his hair. “It’s club business.”

“Don’t pull that bullshit with me. If what happened with Dani is club business, then I’ve been in the middle of it since you came to my office looking for my help. Now, where did you go this morning?”

“I went to see Revels.”

“Why? Are you just looking to get arrested? J.D., he’s a Fed!”

“And I don’t give a fuck that he’s a Fed. He had something to do with Dani’s death. I want fucking answers. I need answers.”

“I know you need answers, but do you think this was the best way to go about it?”

I should’ve known he wouldn’t listen when I told him it wouldn’t be the best idea for him to confront Agent Revels. J.D. was a man who was used to getting his way and if someone had answers to what happened to his family, he didn’t care what the consequences of his actions would be. I just wished he would have thought better about the situation and not put himself in danger. We could have gotten the answers without him tracking the man down.

“And did he give you any new insight?” I asked when he answer.

“He knows that I’m connected to Sin City, a motorcycle club out of Las Vegas and that I changed my last name. No one knows that except family and now you. Not even the brothers.”

“You’re connected to another motorcycle club, and you changed your last name?”

“I did.”

I was surprised at that new information. It made me wonder why. Why would he disconnect completely from his family and change his name?

“And you’re not going to tell me why?”

“I needed a fresh start.”

He shrugged giving me a simple answer to my question, but did I believe the reason was that simple? No. I believed it definitely went deeper than needing a fresh start.

“And Caesar doesn’t know either?”

With a sigh, he shook his head. “Nope. I made a clean break from my family when I left Vegas.”

“Changing your name seems like a lot to do just for a fresh start.”

“It’s a long story. Anyway, the only people who knew me in the past and know I’m with Demons United now are members of my family. Close family. Demon contacted my cousin Tavish, the president, when I started prospecting so there would be no bad blood between our clubs once I patched in.”

My eyes widen. “That means...”

“That means I need Agent Revels to give me a name. This is my family, Rebel. And I’m not accusing anyone of shit until I know the truth.”

“So, what’s the next steps?”

“Church. And even though you may be involved in club business because I came to see you and asked for your help, that involvement ends now.”

“What do you mean? I want to help.”

“I’m not pulling you in any deeper, Rebel. I care for you and I’m going to do for you what, I didn’t do for Dani and Luca. I’m going to protect you. This is where your involvement with all this ends.”

“I’m not walking away from you, J.D.”

His smile sent an electric jolt through me, igniting a desire that made my spine tingle. “I’m glad to hear that because Rebel Pierce whether you know it, you’re stuck with me.”

I laughed, kissed his lips, then pulled away. “I think I like that. You’ll be careful, right?”

I wondered what he was planning. Even though I had a feeling shit was about to get crazy, I wanted to make sure he came back to me. We had a future together. But only if he stayed safe.

The loud knock on the door stopped our conversation.

“Everybody’s here!” Caesar shouted through the door. “We’re ready whenever you are!”

J.D. tapped my thigh, and I rose from his lap. An ominous feeling hung heavy in my gut. As he stood up, he gently wrapped his arm around my waist, drawing me to him. I hadn’t missed him not answering my question which could only mean one thing. Whatever he was planning he might not survive it.
