Chapter 48
I WANT TO GO HOME
Rebel Pierce
“How much longer do I have to be in here?” I asked.
I sounded like I was whining, my voice filled with exhaustion, but I couldn’t help it. Being in the hospital had become exhausting. I needed to touch base with Caesar in person because trying to find out shit about J.D. wasn’t going well over the phone. I understood why he couldn’t say much, but the frustration of being kept in the dark infuriated me.
“Until the doctors clear you, Rebel,” my mother said.
She’d been hanging around too much. I realized I could have died. But me and my mother didn’t have that kind of relationship where she worried about me. I was the hardheaded one. The one who could always take care of herself. The way she was acting now was out of the ordinary and it made me uncomfortable.
“I’m fine. And I have shit to do.”
She narrowed her eyes at me, her gaze piercing and filled with anger. “And what you do is why you’re in this position now.”
I let out an exasperated sigh and rolled my eyes. Of course, she’d use the shooting to back up her reasoning for me not doing something more lady like as she’d say. I loved what I did. Did I ever think helping someone out would lead to me falling in love with a man whose dead wife’s murder involved law enforcement and possibly his father? No but here I was in the middle of it. It sounded more like a Soap Opera than my real life.
“I’m not discussing my job with you, Mother.”
Just as she was about to unleash her righteous indignation, a sudden knock echoed through the door. Della Blackmon pushed it open and walked in with two men following behind her. Without a word from her, I immediately recognized the visitors as the FBI, here to interrogate me about Agent Revels.
“Rebel, this is Agents Locke and Romero. They would like to ask you a few questions.”
Despite my exhaustion from the constant questioning by doctors and law enforcement, I reluctantly agreed. I just wanted to go home.
“Ms. Pierce, we have been told that you’re in a relationship with J.D. Stevens, the President of Demons United MC North Carolina, the one percenter motorcycle club. Is that true?”
I glanced at Della, and she responded with a subtle nod. I focused back on the Agent who asked the question. “That’s correct.”
My mother’s breath caught in a soft gasp, and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. She had a knack for being overly dramatic, making even the simplest things seem like the end of the world.
He definitely wasn’t the type of man she would approve of me being with, but I didn’t care. She wasn’t the one fucking him. So, what she wanted didn’t matter. I wouldn’t go into detail about my relationship with anyone. Who I fuck was my business.
“Do you know where Agent Revels is?” one of the agents asked.
“No, I don’t.”
“Do you know where his wife is?” he asked.
“I don’t,” I said.
They stared at me like they thought I was lying but technically I didn’t know where he or his wife were at. Even though I did believe Agent Revels was dead, if his wife was missing too, so was she.
“Ms. Pierce, we can arrest you for lying to Federal Agents,” Agent Romero said.
“If you want to continue to question my client, I’d suggest you stop with the threats, Agent,” Della said. “Your question was asked and answered. Move on.”
“Do you think J.D. Stevens did something to Agent Revels and shot you because you were going to rat him out?”
A burst of laughter escaped from my lips. It wasn’t just a small chuckle, but a deep belly laugh. Despite what Revels thought, there was absolutely no chance I would ever turn on J.D. And like I said from the very beginning to whoever asked, there was no way in hell J.D. shot me.
“What’s so funny, Ms. Pierce?” the agent asked. “According to Agent Revels notes you were working with him to take down Demons United and had evidence you needed to turn over to him.”
“I’m sorry but I didn’t mean to laugh, but that is total bullshit.”
“So, are you disputing what Agent Revels wrote in his notes?”
“Hell yes! Look, I wasn’t working with Agent Revels, and I wasn’t giving him anything on J.D. or Demons United. Revels was crooked.”
“Excuse me?” Agent Romero asked with disbelief in voice. “What did you just say?”
“I uncovered information that Agent Revels was crooked. So, if anyone shot me it was him, not J.D.”
“That’s quite an accusation, Ms. Pierce,” Agent Romero said.
“Gentlemen, that’s enough questions for today,” Della said.
They narrowed their eyes at Della. “We have more questions, and she just accused a federal agent of corruption and attempted murder,” Agent Locke said.
“And my client has answered all your questions, gentlemen.” Della walked to the door then opened it. “Do I have to remind you, she is recovering from a gunshot wound that nearly took her life? Save your questions for another time.”
They both looked at each other, then put their notepads away. “We’ll be back,” Agent Romero said.
“Looking forward to it,” I said, sarcastically.
They left the room in complete silence, not exchanging any further words. After shutting the door behind them, Della’s gaze shifted towards me.
“Mother, could you please excuse us?”
“No,” she said. “Not until you tell me what the hell is going on Rebel.”
“I can’t talk to you about it because it’s about my client’s personal business.”
“The man who shot you?” she asked with her brow arched.
“He had nothing to do with me getting shot,” I said. “I don’t know how many fucking times I have to say it. J.D. didn’t do this to me. He wouldn’t.”
“Rebel...” My mother groaned, closing her eyes before she looked at me. “What the hell have you gotten yourself into?”
“I didn’t go looking for any of this to happen Mother. Now could you please leave so I can talk to my attorney?”
She huffed and stood. “I hope you don’t think this conversation is over, child because it isn’t. When I come back, it will be with your father, and I expect you to tell us everything.”
Without waiting for a response, she hurried out of my hospital room. Hopefully I’d be so doped up by the time my parents returned I won’t know my head from my ass, and they’d just leave me the hell alone.
Della took a seat beside the bed placing her briefcase in her lap.
“Whatever you say is between me and you.”
“It wasn’t J.D. who shot me. It was Agent Revels.”
“You remember?”
“I do, but I truly don’t know what happened to Agent Revels or his wife. And if I did, I wouldn’t tell you or anyone else.”
“I’m still waiting on the tests results of the bullet to come back. It will exonerate J.D. of shooting you but the evidence you have gives more credence to the claim that J.D. had something to do with his disappearance because you’re in a relationship and Agent Revels shot you.”
“I know.”
She sighed. “Let me see what you have on Revels, so I can go through it.”
Although I was hesitant to share what I had without discussing it with J.D. first, Caesar’s trust in her convinced me I should too.
“Like I said before, I’m here to help Rebel, not judge. I know what the boys do. I’ve been working a case with them for a while now and I know the predicament you’re in.”
I wanted to ask her to clarify, but I also didn’t want to invade her privacy. I didn’t want people asking about my relationship with J.D., so I’d keep my questions to myself.
“As soon as they discharge me, I’ll give you everything I have. I don’t trust anyone else with that information.”
“Understandable.” She stood, reached in her briefcase then handed me a phone.
It was one of those cheap phones you can get from the gas station that was untraceable.
“Caesar said keep it close.”
“Why?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” she said. “And I don’t want to know. Anyway, I want you to rest because this is just the beginning.”
“Thank you.”
She smiled, then walked out. I closed my eyes wishing that I could just escape all of this. I wished I could go to sleep and wake up and all this was just a dream.
Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, the shrill ring of the phone startled me.
“Hello?”
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Relief flooded over me as a smile appeared on my face.
“J.D...”
