Chapter 48

Tyler

I spot Sara, Ramsey, Kara, Adam, Josh, and Tim running down the beach hand-in-hand. "Sara!" I run to her and notice Adam release his grasp on her hand, a look of nervousness in his eyes.

"Hey!" Sara releases Ramsey's hand and gives me a quick hug. Her eyes are glassy and she has a huge smile on her face. "Oh my gosh, that was so crazy. The bonfire got busted and we all had to scatter!"

"Are y'all okay?" I search their faces.

"Yeah, we're fine," Ramsey says and Kara nods. Adam, Josh, and Tim nod and look at me with concern in their eyes.

"Why? What's going on?" Sara asks.

I run my hand through my hair as I consider how to tell them what Sloane saw at the beach. "Apparently, a girl who was at the bonfire had her drink spiked. That's why I was headed that way. To warn you." I grab Sara's hands. "You didn't accept a drink from anyone, did you?"

Sara shakes her head. I look at Ramsey and Kara who do the same. "We had these guys to protect us," Sara says as she puts her arm around Adam's shoulders and hooks a thumb at Tim and Josh.

I feel my eyes narrow and Adam moves toward me and out of my girlfriend's grasp. "It's all good, man." He pats my shoulder. "Come on, let's get out of here."

I can't tell if Adam is interested in Sara or not, but either way, I'm glad she, Ramsey, and Kara were with them because being with those guys might have kept them safe. I'm not going to make a scene in front of everyone and am just so relieved that Sara is safe.

I take her hand as our group heads back toward our condo. I let our friends continue walking and stop so I can talk to Sara.

"What are you doing?" Sara asks as she looks ahead to where our friends are going.

Her brown curls are dancing in the gulf breeze. "I'm so glad you're okay." I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear and look into her eyes which go from confused to happy.

"Of course, I'm okay, silly." She jokingly punches my arm. "Now, let's go. It's our last night of spring break and I'm not done partying!" Sara tugs me down the beach and starts jogging toward our friends. "Hey guys, wait up!"

I begrudgingly jog with Sara, disappointed that she didn't so much as kiss me, or even hug me for that matter. She punched my arm like we're buddies. That's when I realize that maybe that's where we are now. Friends. Buddies. Pals.
