16. Nolan
NOLAN
Malcolm calls me at five-forty on a Wednesday morning in early January, and before I even answer, I already know someone’s week ends in flames.
"Mr. Ashford. I wanted to flag something before you saw it in the schedule.
Miss Sutton spent the night at the south parcel field office.
Terry checked her in at nine-fifteen last night and she did not check out.
The night security log has her in the trailer at four-twelve this morning.
I've got a man on the door. She is fine.
She is asleep, as far as we can tell. I am calling because I would rather you yell at me at five-forty than at seven. "
"She did what."
"Spent the night, sir. In the field trailer. She brought a blanket from her car. I've got photographs of the blanket if you want them. I do not recommend looking at the photographs. They are not flattering to the trailer."
"Malcolm."
"Sir."
"Get her up. Carefully. Get her something hot to drink. Tell her I am twenty minutes out. Don't put it in writing."
I am dressed in eleven minutes. I am in the car in twelve.
The south parcel is twenty minutes from the penthouse in good traffic and I make it in fifteen because the city is mostly empty at six in the morning in January and because I am driving like a man who has not slept on purpose.
The field trailer is parked on the east edge of the lot, white prefab, plywood steps, a small handwritten sign on the door that reads HALLORAN-REYES — KNOCK FIRST, and Malcolm is standing outside it with a paper cup of coffee in his hand and the resigned expression of a man who has accepted his role in the next ten minutes of this story.
She is at the small folding table with a hard hat she did not bother to take off, a thermos of something steaming, and an enormous roll of vellum spread across half the table with red pen in the margins.
She is wearing yesterday's clothes under one of my sweaters that she put on top of yesterday's clothes at some point, and there is a wool blanket folded over the back of the metal chair, and she does not look up when I open the door.
"Don't start, Nolan."
"I am twenty-four weeks pregnant on your behalf and I slept in a trailer last night. Don't start."
"You are six months pregnant on our behalf, and you slept in a trailer last night."
"I slept on the cot. I did not sleep on the floor.
I had a blanket. Terry was here until two.
Malcolm was here from two on. There were three sets of eyes on me for nine consecutive hours and I drank water every ninety minutes because Malcolm timed it.
I did the responsible version of an unreasonable thing, Nolan, and I am going to need you to recognize the difference before you say whatever you came here to say. "
I close the door behind me. The trailer is small—parking-space small—and the heater keeps swinging between blast furnace and last rites. On the table, a half-eaten granola bar slumps beside the vellum, a breakfast no culture has ever claimed.
"Tell me about the permit."
"The Streets and San revocation came in at six last night.
We had until eight this morning to file the corrected drainage easement or we lose the closure window on Sixteenth for six weeks.
Six weeks pushes the south wall demolition into spring rains.
Spring rains push the corner cantilever to next October.
The corner cantilever is the only piece of this project I have personally drawn from scratch, Nolan.
I am not losing it because a clerk at Streets and San put a comma in the wrong field at four o'clock on a Tuesday. "
"You could have called me."
"For what."
"For a hotel two blocks from this site. For a driver. For a phone call to the alderman, which I could have made in my sleep, which I would have made before midnight, which would have moved your filing window to noon today instead of eight."
"I did not know the alderman would take your phone call before he took mine."
"He took yours."
"At four-thirty in the morning, Nolan. After I had already drawn the easement correction. I am very good at my job. I do not need you to be good at it for me."
"That is not what I am doing."
"That is exactly what you are doing, and you do not even know you are doing it, which is the part that scares me.
You wake up and the first sentence in your head is what does Arielle need, and the second sentence is what would be easier if I handled it, and the third sentence is the email you send my project manager from the back of your car.
You have been doing the third sentence behind my back since October and you know it and I know it and I have been letting you because the soup was good and because I am tired and because some small, embarrassing part of me has enjoyed having someone in the room who notices when my shoes are pinching.
But I cannot have you in the trailer, Nolan. The trailer is mine."
I put Malcolm’s coffee on the corner of the table and take the metal chair across from her. It gives the usual trailer-chair protest, a small metallic grievance.
"Talk to me."
"I am talking to you."
"Talk to me about the part underneath this. Not the permit. Not the easement. The part where I knock on the trailer door at six in the morning and you tell me I am not allowed in the trailer."
She closes the red pen. She sets it on the vellum.
She does not look at the pen. She does not look at me.
She looks at a point on the wall just past my left ear where someone has stuck a faded calendar from 2022, and she takes a long breath in and lets it out in a way I have not heard her do before.
"My father left when I was three months in," she says.
"I don't mean my mother. I mean me. He left when I was three months in utero.
I have been told the story by my grandmother and not by my mother, because my mother has never said his name out loud in my hearing in thirty-one years.
He left for a woman in Detroit who had a job that paid better than the job he had in Chicago, and he did not come back, and he did not send a card, and my mother was twenty-six and worked three jobs and finished her teaching certificate at night and never once asked anyone for help, Nolan.
Not once. Not her sister. Not her mother.
Not the church. Nobody. I watched her do it.
I watched her make a child and a career and a household out of nothing for twenty-two years on the principle that asking for help is the first step toward being left, and I learned exactly what she taught me, which is that if you can do it alone you have to, because anything else is interest you are going to pay back later with your dignity.
That is the part underneath this. That is why the trailer is mine.
Because the second I let you handle the alderman at four in the morning, I am not the architect anymore, I am the woman the architect used to be, and I cannot afford that.
Not in this city. Not on this project. Not with your last name on the contract. "
I do not say anything for a beat. I let her keep her eyes on the calendar.
"My mother left when I was nine," I say.
"Not the way yours left. The other way. She was in the house.
She slept down the hall. She made breakfast on Saturdays.
She came to my swim meets in a navy coat and stood in the back so my father wouldn't see her.
She stopped speaking to me by inches, Arielle.
She stopped looking at me at breakfast first. Then she stopped asking about school.
By the time I was twelve she would walk past me in the hallway like I was a piece of furniture she could not find the receipt for, and the worst part of it was that she still kissed Claire on the forehead at night, because Claire was four years younger and not yet, in her view, contaminated.
My father had said something to her about me.
I have never known what. I will probably die without knowing what.
She died when I was nineteen and she did not, in the last seven years of her life, say my name to my face once. "
She is looking at me now. The vellum is forgotten. Her hand rests at the side of the table.
"Nolan."
"I'm telling you because you told me. I am not trading.
I am explaining. The reason I knock on doors at six in the morning is because I learned at nine that the people who are supposed to stay can decide to leave while they are still in the house, and that nobody warns you it is happening, and that the only way I have ever figured out how to make sure I am not left in the hallway again is to be the man who walks in the room first. You think I am trying to take the trailer.
I am trying not to be left. They are different problems. I am asking you to believe they are different problems."
She does not say anything. She reaches across the vellum and puts her hand over mine on the table, and her hand is cold from the trailer and warm from her thermos and small against my knuckles, and we sit there in a prefab box at six-fifteen in the morning with a red pen between us and a permit deadline two hours out, and I let her have my hand.
"Eat the granola bar," I say, eventually.
"It's stale."
"Eat it anyway."
She laughs once, soft, almost not laughing.
She picks up the granola bar and takes a bite and makes a face and keeps chewing, and Malcolm taps twice on the trailer door from outside to let us know the alderman is on his cell, and the morning starts, the way mornings start, whether we are ready for them or not.
