62. Violet

VIOLET

I’ve been sitting on the couch for twenty-three minutes, trying not to check my phone.

Twenty-three minutes of trusting him.

It’s terrible.

I hate it.

I would much rather break into his house.

Callie looks over at me. “You’re twitching.”

“I’m not.”

“You are. It’s weird.”

“I’m trusting the process.”

“You hate the process.”

“I really do.”

The sound of an engine makes me sit up straight.

Not just any engine.

I’d know that one anywhere.

His.

Callie stops talking.

We move to the window at the same time.

Drew steps out of his car.

For a second, I can’t breathe.

Because he’s here.

He chose to come here.

Callie looks from him to me, a slow smile spreading across her face. “Guess you don’t need the kidnapping plan.”

I don’t answer.

I can’t.

I’m already moving.

Already opening the door.

He came back.

I trusted him.

And he came back.
