Chapter Three

I have stayed true to my word and have kept watch over her.

Keeping my distance.

Guarding.

Waiting.

Wanting .

When the merfolk leader arrived, I was worried that he would try to keep her, knowing what she is and what she is capable of. To say I was grateful when the older woman she loves stepped in and helped her get out of the village is an understatement.

But this?

No. I just cannot stand by and watch this happen. I will not.

When I watched her practice the last few days, the terror inside of me continued to grow at the concern that this was her plan. She has been trying so very hard and stayed committed to learning on her own. It makes me proud of her. But it does not change the fact that she has not improved. At all.

And after she died, I now know what she truly is to me. What I am supposed to be for her .

So I have to break my promise. There is no way I can let her get on that metal beast alone. I will give in to my weakness to be close to her and to protect her. Even if I am protecting her from herself.

Once I accept that, my body moves on its own. I cannot stop myself from reaching out and touching her, even if I want to. Her hand against mine sends a pulse of energy to my core that calls to me. And in that brief touch, I know.

Fuck this.

I am done watching.

She is strong and wonderful. Capable of so much in this world. I would be proud to simply be in her presence if nothing else. And if that is all she wants me to be, then I will do so proudly for all of eternity.

Forsythia Grimshaw is my now, my forever. She is my breath and my heartbeat. She is all of me and more. She is my soul-bond mate, and I will do anything for her.

But one thing is for certain.

I will die before I let her clumsy ass try to operate that motorcycle on an actual road.
