Epilogue 3 Ego
“You want me to run a security detail for a kindergarten teacher?”
I stare at Remy Falco like he’s lost his goddamn mind.
He doesn’t blink. Doesn’t smirk. Just leans back in that leather chair of his like the king of all calm, tapping his pen once against the file on the desk between us.
“Yes,” he says simply.
I wait a beat. “Is this a test?”
“No.”
“A punishment?”
“Still no.”
“You sure you don’t want to just send Kane again? He loves a good damsel situation.”
Remy exhales slowly, then slides the manila folder across the polished mahogany.
“Sabrina Rosetto. Lives in Little Italy. Works at Midtown Academy. Someone’s been sending her threatening letters for the past month. Local PD brushed it off—until last week, when a man tried to grab one of her students during pickup.”
That sobers me up.
I open the file.
Sabrina Rosetto
Age: 33
Occupation: Kindergarten Teacher, Midtown Academy
Emergency Contact: Lucia Rosetto (Grandmother, retired NYPD, lives in the building)
Incident Report: Letters. Break-in. Attempted child abduction (foiled). No arrest. Escalation likely.
A glossy photo is clipped to the top.
Brown eyes, big and wary. Dark curls piled into a messy bun. Freckles dusting olive-toned skin. Soft lips. Smile uncertain, like she’s used to being let down.
She looks sweet.
Too sweet.
“This isn’t our usual clientele,” I say, voice low.
Remy nods.
“She’s not. But someone’s got a serious fixation, and she’s been under the radar too long. She reached out through a friend of a friend—someone we trust.”
I don’t ask who. Doesn’t matter.
What matters is that someone out there thinks a kindergarten teacher is worth stalking.
I close the file and stand. “I’ll take care of it.”
“She’s expecting you this afternoon,” Remy adds. “Try not to terrify her, yeah?”
“No promises,” I mutter.
But as I head for the elevator with the file tucked under my arm, I already know one thing for sure.
Sabrina Rosetto might look soft.
But if she’s got someone that obsessed, there’s more to her than meets the eye.
And I’m about to find out exactly what.
