18. Nate
Chapter eighteen
Nate
" G ood evening, Dr. Reynolds!" Frances walked toward me in one of her signature quirky outfits – a polka-dot dress paired with bright yellow tights and purple sneakers. Her curly red hair bounced with each step, and her freckled face beamed excitedly. "You're right on time for your scavenger hunt!"
"Evening, Frances," I greeted back, maintaining my casual demeanor. A hint of my nerves probably seeped through my voice, but she didn't seem to notice as she beamed back at me.
"Well, let's get you started, shall we?" Frances held out a small package wrapped in brown paper and tied with a red ribbon. "The first clue to your hunt is in here."
"Thanks," I said, taking the package she handed me. "Susan mentioned you were helping with this."
"Of course! I couldn't let my favorite lovebirds down," she winked. As much as I appreciated her enthusiasm, I couldn't help but feel slightly annoyed by her constant meddling in our relationship. But it all came from a good place. I couldn't fault her for that.
"Alright, let's see what we have here." I carefully untied the ribbon and opened the package. Inside was a small scroll, neatly written in Susan's handwriting, attached to the antique telescope I had wanted to purchase. She must have told me not to purchase it so she could go back and get it for me.
"Like stargazers tracing constellations bright, your journey starts with a twist of delight. Follow Baxter’s nose to find where memories grow, where caffeine flows, and first impressions go."
"First impressions, huh?" I chuckled, remembering the awkwardness of our first date at Rosewood Cafe. We were two people pulled together by fate, trying to make sense of our unexpected attraction.
Baxter wagged his tail and sniffed at the paper in my hands. I scratched him behind the ears, and his tail thumped against my leg. "Ready for an adventure, boy?" He yipped in response, his soulful eyes bright with excitement.
The hunt was on, and the woman who had captured my heart so completely waited at the end.
I clipped Baxter's leash on, and we headed out the door, the evening sun warm on our faces. The walk to Rosewood Cafe was familiar, and soon, we arrived at the cozy little building tucked between a bookstore and a thrift shop.
The bell above the door jingled as we entered. I inhaled the rich aroma of coffee and baked goods that filled the cafe. Behind the counter, the barista, Lila, looked up from the espresso machine, and her eyes lit up with interest.
"Well, if it isn't Dr. Dreamy himself!" she exclaimed, setting down the cup into which she'd been frothing milk. Lila loved gossip and always had an ear out for the latest news about the residents of our small town.
I chuckled, leaning against the counter. "And a good day to you, too, Lila. I don't suppose you have something for me?"
"As a matter of fact..." She reached under the counter and pulled out a book. It was the same tattered paperback copy of Pride and Prejudice that Susan and I had read from at the picnic.
I flipped through it, smiling at the notes filling the margins in Susan's loopy handwriting. Her funny commentary on the characters was as witty and unexpected as I remembered.
Tucked between the pages was a folded note. I unfolded it eagerly, Baxter nosing at the paper. The clue hinted at the ice cream shop down the street where Susan and I spontaneously ran into each other one night.
I folded the note and slipped it into my pocket, giving Lila a wink. "Wish me luck!"
She grinned. "Go get her, Dr. Dreamy."
With a chuckle, I made my way out of the cafe. Baxter was leading me down the street, sniffing every nook and cranny along the way. I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm. I had never been a fan of scavenger hunts, but I couldn't wait to discover where Susan's ingenious trail of clues would take us next.
I noticed some of the townspeople pointing in our direction as we walked. Frances had probably already told the whole town about the scavenger hunt. As we approached Scoops & Swirls's Ice Cream Shoppe, I saw the owner of the ice cream parlor, Katie, through the window scooping ice cream behind the counter.
The bell jingled cheerfully as I entered. Katie looked up, her face lighting up. "There he is! I've been waiting for you."
She grabbed a small cup and scooped out a serving of rocky road, Susan's favorite. A spoon with a folded note wrapped around the handle was nestled in the ice cream.
I took it with a grin. "You're the best, Katie."
"Anything for young love," she said with a wink.
I unwrapped the note as I stepped back outside, Baxter staring longingly at the ice cream. "Sorry, buddy, this one's not for you," I chuckled, patting Baxter's head. The note read: "Your next clue is where we had our first real kiss, under the willows and stars, where strawberries were eaten and our hearts were beaten."
That was an easy one. It was a memory that had etched itself into my very soul. Our first kiss. I remembered the chill of the evening air, the soft rustling willows, and the sweet taste of strawberries on Susan's lips. Goosebumps rippled across my skin at the memory.
Without wasting another moment, I guided Baxter toward the park. The evening sun cast a golden glow over the park as I walked along the familiar path, Baxter's leash held securely in my hand.
"Alright, Baxter, the clue says it's hidden beneath the bench where we had our picnic," I murmured, scanning the park for the exact spot where I had set up the surprise picnic for Susan.
Baxter wagged his tail, pulling me towards the wooden bench with an air of certainty. Kneeling down, I found a small, folded note taped underneath.
"Good boy, Baxter!" I praised him, ruffling the fur on his head before unfolding the note.
"Dear Nate," it began, "Do you remember how we couldn't stop laughing at the ridiculous jokes we told each other here? Like the one about the penguin and the suntan lotion? Moments like these have made me realize how special our connection is. Here's your next clue: Find the place where we danced under the stars without a care in the world."
I knew exactly where she was referring to. The gazebo by the community center at the edge of the park, where we had danced together at our fake engagement party. Baxter and I exchanged an excited look and hurried down the tree-lined path.
As we approached the ornate white gazebo, I spotted Susan standing there. I met her gaze, and my heart was swelling. I couldn't wait to see what this incredible woman had planned for us next.
Susan's hands trembled slightly as she reached out and took mine. Her eyes shimmered with emotion as she gazed up at me.
"Nate," she began, her voice soft but steady. "I know this whole situation between us started a bit unconventionally. But the past month and a half getting to know you, the real you, has been incredible. You've shown me time and again what a kind, dedicated, and caring man you are in ways big and small."
I squeezed her hands gently, listening intently.
"And I know neither of us expected this, but..." She took a shaky breath. "I've completely and utterly fallen in love with you."
My heart swelled with joy at her words.
"I'm so sorry I ever doubted what we could have together," she continued earnestly. "You 've proven to me the depth of your integrity and compassion. You make me laugh with your terrible jokes." We both chuckled. "And you've been unwaveringly dedicated to your patients and community, even when it was difficult."
She reached up and tenderly caressed my cheek. "You are an exceptional man, Nate Reynolds. And if you'll still have me, I want nothing more than to face the future together by your side."
I pulled her into my arms, embracing her tightly.
"Nothing would make me happier," I whispered. Our lips met in a passionate, perfect kiss as we held each other close.
We sat down together on the blanket Susan had put out, the fading sun casting a warm glow over the park. Susan had prepared all my favorite snack foods: fresh berries, purple grapes, little sandwiches, crackers, cheese squares, and homemade cookies.
"Wow, you went all out with this picnic," I commented, my eyes scanning the feast before us.
"I wanted to make it special," she replied, her eyes sparkling with love. "And besides, I figured we could use a proper celebration after everything we've been through."
"Definitely!" I couldn't help but agree, my heart overflowing with gratefulness for this amazing woman who not only stole my heart but kept surprising me in ways I never thought possible.
We spent the next hour indulging in laughter and tender moments, playfully debating the merits of various cookie flavors and reminiscing about our journey together thus far. Susan would occasionally feed me a grape, her fingers brushing against my lips, sending delightful shivers down my spine. Her bright blue eyes glowed with happiness, and I couldn't help but think how absolutely lucky I was to have her in my life.
As the sun set over the park, Susan's expression turned serious. "Nate, I have one last surprise for you."
"Really?" My curiosity piqued. "What is it?"
"Close your eyes," she instructed, her voice tinged with excitement.
I did as she asked, feeling a thrill of anticipation coursing through me. I heard her rummaging through the picnic basket, and she gently placed something in my hand.
"Okay, you can open them now."
I looked down to see a small, round object nestled in my palm. It was a silver voyager compass with intricate details.
"Wow, Susan," I breathed, my voice cracking with gratitude. "This is incredible. Thank you."
"Wait, there's more!" Her face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. "I've named a star after you. It is a tribute to your love for the night sky and the special moments you shared with your father."
"You named a star after me?" I asked in wonder.
Susan nodded, blushing. "I registered it with the International Star Registry. Now you have your own star in the Andromeda Galaxy."
I was speechless, completely overwhelmed.
"It's absolutely perfect," I whispered. "This is the most thoughtful, amazing gift anyone has ever given me. Thank you."
We held each other as the first stars winked into view, marking the start of our future together.
Susan pulled out her phone. "Let's see if we can find your star." She tapped on the stargazing app and handed it to me. "The coordinates are all set. You just need to follow the on-screen guidance."
"Ready for a celestial adventure?" I asked playfully, taking the phone from her.
"Always, Captain Nate!"
"Ah, there it is!" she exclaimed, pointing towards a particular cluster of stars. I followed her finger and focused the app on that area.
"Wow," I breathed, my heart swelling with love and gratitude as I gazed at the twinkling star named after me. "It's perfect, Susan. Just like you."
"Smooth talker," she teased, bumping her shoulder against mine. "But seriously, I'm glad you like it. I wanted to give you something that would always remind you of our connection, no matter where life takes us."
"Even if it takes us to outer space?" I joked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Especially then," she laughed, and I could hear the warmth in her voice as we continued to stare up at the night sky.
As the enormity of her gift settled in, I felt a tidal wave of emotion crashing over me. This incredible woman had done so much more than name a star after me. She had illuminated a path through the darkness, guiding me back to the dreams I'd once cherished and showing me a future filled with endless possibilities.
"Thank you," I whispered, my throat tight with emotion. "For everything. I am hopelessly in love with you.”
"Of course, Nate" she replied softly, squeezing my hand. "I love you, too. "
Overcome with emotion, I turned and pulled her into another kiss. I poured all my love and devotion into that perfect moment, knowing we were unbreakable together.
As we finally broke apart, foreheads touching, Susan whispered, "I don't want to hide anymore. I'm ready for us to share how we really feel with Rivermint Cove."
I smiled and stroked her cheek. "Me too. It's time. No more pretending."
Together, we would create our own happily ever after – one laugh, one adventure, and one stargazing session at a time.
