27. Kay

Chapter twenty-seven

Kay

Saxon was at the table in the sunroom with a steaming mug of coffee and an open laptop.

Job hunting. Again. At least it was a nice place to work with sun streaming in and it wasn’t too hot yet.

It could get that way in June, but currently, it was only about eighty.

He looked good sitting there, and I hoped he was enjoying the morning a little and not simply torturing himself with searching the job boards.

I grabbed a coffee and joined him. “Hey, Saxon. Any luck?”.

“No. Not really. I mean…” He ran a hand through his hair and scrubbed at the back of his head. “If I wanted to go back into firefighting. But I don’t. Not really.”

I sat in the chair next to him. “Why not?”

Saxon’s eyes were dark, misting with emotion. “I’ll be honest with you, Kay. I’m scared of it.”

“Scared? You’re not scared of anything, Daddy.”

“That’s sweet, Kay, but I’m only human.” He caressed my head, running his hand along the side and carding his fingers through my long strands. “The accident has me rethinking everything. That’s why I’m here.” He gestured to his laptop. “But none of this employment is what I want.”

“What do you want?”

“Good question.” He put his hand on mine and leaned in.

I loved how affectionate he was. Donny was too.

It was something I hadn’t had enough of in my life.

“I really want something where I can take time off when you’re on the road.

And not a firefighter. And it’s not here. ” He gestured to his laptop.

“You can stay with me. Like forever. I mean, I’m like…not rich or super rich, but I have money. I make more than I spend for sure.”

“I want to stay with you—live with you—because we love each other, not because I need help. And staying here means I should pay my share.”

“I don’t care about shit like that. I never did, even before Bramble Punk when I was playing dive bars in LA.

” That seemed like forever ago, but it was really only a few years.

Those days, playing with my shitty band was the only thing that got me through life.

My mother had passed and my father was MIA as always.

My brother took on an apprenticeship as a mechanic and never looked back.

He’s probably still working in that same garage.

We didn’t have any other siblings that I was aware of.

Good ol’ Dad could have had a few other bastards like us, who knew?

I wouldn’t claim them if he did. His absence meant growing up in, well, not Skid Row, but pretty fucking close.

I learned to fight and survive at a young age.

Too young. Donny said that was probably where my little persona came from and why I tended to sit back and watch before jumping in, gauging the situation first.

Donny walked out with a mug of coffee and sat across from me. “Samesies. But I think I was spoiled. My folks had money. I never wanted for anything. Never worried about money. After law school, I started working for Harrison…”

“I understand that, but I’m the daddy. I need to take care of you. Not the other way around.”

Donny and I busted up laughing. We already figured out that wasn’t how shit worked. Donny reached across the table and rested his hand on Saxon’s arm. “Sorry for laughing, but you already take care of us in many other ways. Emotionally. Sexually.” He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

“Exactly. And now we can take care of you financially. I’d rather have you with us on tour than working some job to pay rent that I don’t need.” That was the truth. It helped me so much to have him with me. For both of them to be with me. When they weren’t, I worried and got up in my head.

Saxon sighed, but we weren’t having that.

Donny and I worked together to shove him back away from the table, then Donny jumped onto his lap while I wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

Saxon immediately retaliated by tickling Donny.

When he reached for me, I squealed and ran through the house and back to the bedroom.

I heard Donny’s feet pounding after me. Then both of them tackled me to the bed and tickled me until I was screaming.

After a few minutes, we settled with sighs all around. Saxon rolled to his side and rubbed my belly. “Thank you for reminding me of that, Kay. I…I do love you. Both of you, and I want to make this work.”

“I, um…have an idea, though,” Donny said, climbing over me to look at Saxon. “You need your own business. To do something that you can do from anywhere. Even on the road.”

The thoughts swirled in my head, and I didn’t think I’d get them out fast enough. “Like decorating. You did an amazing job with my playroom. You could do any little playroom…I mean…” I bit my bottom lip. He probably didn’t want to do that. “It would be helping people.”

“I’m not a designer. I have no experience.” Saxon grabbed Donny and pulled him to his other side.

Our feet tangled together, and I rested my head on his broad chest. “You do have experience. Start small. Take pictures of my room to share. It’s gorgeous.”

“It is, and we can reach out to people in the scene.” Donny sounded confident. “I have a few connections from a couple of clubs out in LA. We can start there.”

“We? It’s we now?” Saxon flipped over and tickled Donny again.

Donny laughed and squirmed. “S-Stop.”

“It is we, though. We’re in this together.” I tugged his arm. “I love you, Saxon.”

“Yeah.” Donny sighed, coming down from all his giggling. “I love you, too. Both of you.”

“Alright then. I think we have a plan.” Saxon smiled, his dark brown eyes catching the overhead light. It was almost like they were glowing.

“Then it’s official. We are all in a formal relationship together?” I asked, needing clarity. “And you’re both going to live here with me. At least most of the time.”

“Yes.” Donny was quick to answer. “And since we’re on that subject, Harrison apologized.”

Kay sat up straight. “No way.”

“Yes way. He said he wants me to be happy, and if this is it, he supports it. Totally backing off.”

Saxon grabbed my shoulders and pulled me to him, hugging me tightly and smashing all three of us together. “That’s great, Donny. Has to make it easier to work with him.”

“It does.”

“I love you both. I want this.” Saxon kissed Donny’s head, then mine. “We’re officially together, and I’ll live with you for as long as you’ll have me.”

Donny jumped up and bounced on the bed, screaming, “Yay!” He was so happy.

Our little life was turning out to be perfect after all.
