Thirty-Nine

I had no idea where we were headed because we were on some back road in the middle of nowhere with no signs and endless forest around us. I held Molly protectively against my body, hoping the seatbelt would protect us both should anything happen.

Music played from the car stereo, the sound of heavy metal blaring through the truck. I pulled the blanket up as high as I could around Molly to try to cover her ears. I hated that I didn’t have anything to protect her with, other than myself, because I knew that wouldn’t be enough.

Eventually, he turned onto another road and stopped when a cabin came into view, and then behind that, a large, warehouse-looking structure.

My skin erupted in goosebumps as I realized that he had brought me out to the middle of nowhere, knowing no one would ever find us.
