Chapter 44
Forty-Four
Axel
I felt like we should be getting closer as the road narrowed into nothing but a treacherous cliff-hugging path.
The higher we went, the slower we had to go, and every second that ticked by made my worry climb.
Finally, we reached our destination as the warehouse came into sight.
It would be a lengthy walk, but it was better to go in this way and pray we could get close before we were noticed.
I watched where Ashley parked, noting how she pulled into the thick forest around us, concealing her vehicle the best she could.
I put plenty of space between us before I found a decent place to park without getting stuck.
I hopped out of the truck, closing the door gently to keep from making any loud sounds.
Jo and Ashley were at the back of Ashley’s truck when I walked up. The back of the truck was packed full of guns and ammunition, making the reality of what we were about to walk into that much clearer.
“Here, take this,” Jo said, handing me a gun.
I didn’t bother to tell her that I was already packing because I knew she wouldn’t have offered me another one if she thought what I had was sufficient.
I took it and tucked it into the back of my jeans, next to my Glock.
I had another piece tucked into the front of my jeans and a few mags in my pocket.
Dr. Foster hung back, going through the bags of supplies in the back of her SUV.
She had things laid out for quick, easy access, which made my stomach knot at the thought of what she would have waiting for her if any of us made it out of there.
While I knew we needed her there to help with medical stuff, it felt weird that she wasn’t going with us.
She was one of the toughest people I had ever met and never backed down from anything.
“She can’t save lives if she’s dead,” Jo answered bluntly without me having to ask. Then she turned and faced everyone, a solemn look on her face.
“I don’t know what is waiting for us inside,” she started, pulling her shoulders back.
“All I know is that one of our own is in danger, and it is up to us to save them. The only lives we spare today are those we know. If you don’t know someone, kill them.
Take their life before they can take yours. ”
“What if it’s your—” one of the Packson brothers started, but stopped when Jo shook her head.
“My only loyalty inside lies with Charlie and that baby. Do what you have to do to get them out alive. We meet here when we’re done.”
Everyone nodded, the group silent as we prayed that this would go in our favor.
