Eighteen
Dom
Dinner was delicious, even if I was slightly concerned that Jo had tried to poison me. To say that she was pissed off at me was an understatement. Jo glared at me like I was the worst person in the world, and that was a look I would never be able to get out of my head.
After dinner, we called it a night early. I attempted to set up on the couch to give her space, but then she muttered something about me being as stupid as I looked, and I felt like maybe we were getting back to where we had been a few days ago.
I rolled onto my back, staring at the ceiling while she snored softly beside me. I hadn’t been able to sleep because knowing how bad I had hurt her broke me in a way I had never felt before. Even if Jo somehow forgave me for all of this, I would never be able to forgive myself.
The wind had stopped a few hours ago, creating a calm, peace compared to the raging storm that continued to linger in my mind.
I needed sleep, but it was apparent it wasn’t coming anytime soon.
I released a breath and slowly got out of bed, making sure not to disturb Jo.
It was pointless lying there, staring at the ceiling all night.
But I also knew that I wasn’t going to rest until I made things right between us.
I sat down at the kitchen table and started scrolling through my phone’s messages. Seeing Tray’s name created a knot in my stomach, especially as I pulled up the picture of Lauren and looked at it.
The photos I sent of Jo were taken in places that would be hard to identify.
Mainly outside, where there was thick forest and plenty of snow.
It showed that she was alive and well, whereas the picture he sent of Lauren had her hands bound in front of her and a gag ball in her mouth while tears streamed down her face.
She looked terrified, and given that I couldn’t see anything more than her face and hands, I had no way of knowing whether she was okay.
That was the thing about Tray, though. He couldn’t give a fuck whether Lauren was okay. He didn’t care about her and was only using her to get what he wanted. I knew once he had Jo, he would toss Lauren to whoever wanted her, leaving me to fight off whoever I had to if I wanted to save my sister.
I scrolled to the next message, the one that had come in this morning from Tray when Jo had found my phone. I opened the video and pressed play, holding my fingers to my lips as I watched Lauren speak to me, her voice trembling as hard as her hands that were still bound in front of her.
“Please, Dom.” She cried, shaking her head as someone off to the side shoved her.
She let out a gasp and righted herself the best she could, but by the way she moved, I could tell she was in pain.
“I need your help. He said he’s going to kill me if you don’t tell him where Jo is.
I know you don’t trust me, but I really need your help.
I don’t want to die like this. Please, Dom. ”
I bit into my fist, struggling to hold it together as I watched my sister until the video abruptly ended. I was so distraught by it that I hadn’t seen Jo standing in the doorway.
“Text Tray and tell him I will go willingly,” Jo said firmly. “We will leave first thing in the morning. Set up a meeting place that is far from where Keith’s team is. The less they know about this, the better.”
