Forty-Three

“Are you sure this isn’t a terrible idea?” Jo hissed as we ducked in between cars, trying to stay out of sight as I looked for one to steal.

“No,” I responded over my shoulder as I held onto her hand and guided her.

The parking lot was surprisingly full, but given how big a town Timber Falls was, it tracked.

I needed something that would be easy to get into without causing a scene, and that could blend in with other vehicles so we wouldn’t be easily identifiable.

I doubted that Keith would go so far as to report us as missing or in danger, but anything was possible.

I had left him a note in our room, knowing that was the first place he would look when we didn’t answer our phones.

I ducked down another row of cars, gently pulling door handles to see if we would get lucky and find one that was unlocked. We didn’t have a ton of time to waste on finding a vehicle, so I would eventually have to pick one to break into.

We stopped between a sedan and a minivan as I weighed the pros and cons of both. A sedan might be faster and easier to get in and out of tight spaces, but a minivan would be—

“I didn’t peg you as a minivan kind of man,” Ashley said as she suddenly appeared in front of me, blocking us from getting past her.

She smirked as she folded her arms over her chest.

“Fuck,” I muttered under my breath as I hung my head.

“Don’t let him fool you. He’s not as big and tough as he thinks he is,” Keith said, blocking the other side as he came up behind Jo.

“Seriously?” I looked up, looking between them as Jo stayed tucked into my side, looking guilty. “How the fuck did you find us so fast?”

Keith leveled me with a look that said, "Really?"

“There’s surveillance all over the place, which means there isn’t a single inch that my team doesn’t have covered. What’s up, and where the fuck do you two think you’re going?”

“We should just go back to the room,” Jo said softly enough for me to hear but not the others.

I hated the look of defeat on her face and knew that she had gotten her hopes up about seeing Kaitlyn.

“We were going to take a little road trip,” I answered. “There’s a little town a few hours away that we wanted to visit. Our phones are upstairs in the room, so there’s nothing that can track us. It will be safe.”

I looked over at Keith, praying that he wouldn’t make this hard for us. The last thing I wanted was to get into it with him physically, but I would if it meant giving Jo what she needed.

“What’s the town?” Keith asked, glancing at Ashley behind me.

I worked my jaw back and forth, debating whether I should tell the truth or lie.

He raised his eyebrow and waited.

“Junction Pass.”

“What’s in Junction Pass?” Keith pressed, but it was Jo who spoke next.

“My daughter.”
