CHAPTER EIGHT

LEXI

––––––––

“You slept with Mason!” Emily accuses.

I choke on my drink. “What?”

How the hell does she know that? My eyes narrow as the truth sinks in.

Bloody Mason!

Has he told all his friends? He must have. That’s the only way Emily could know. It’s not like we were all over each other on the weekend.

The opposite, in fact.

Except his big brother act, saving me from Craig.

Well, bully for him. I’ve got plans to start dating some high-flyers in this city to prove he means nothing to me.

When I get around to it.

I still can’t believe he told everyone. I would never have picked Mason for being the notch on the headboard kinda guy. Then again, I remind myself I don’t know him at all.

“Oh my god, did you? Mason is seriously hot. Do not tell my brother I said that,” Catherine points at Emily. “I’ve always thought he was sexy. Not as hot as Zander, but...yeah, do not repeat that to Sebastian either.”

Emily’s mouth falls open and looks like she’s about to say something, then blinks. “We can circle back around to all that. Lexi. What the hell?”

Ugh.

I’m not going to lie.

“Yes. Fine. I did.” I flop back on the sofa. “I know I’m an idiot. It won’t happen again though.”

They both stare at me like I’m a big fat liar.

I’m not.

Mason will never come near me again. I’d put money on that. I can’t speak to my willpower because the man is hot. I’m offended and pissed at him, but I’m a red-blooded woman.

I’d likely tell him to go jump in the lake.

I just can’t guarantee it.

I’m hoping I will meet someone new who will take my mind off my boss.

“Oh, my god. You did. I knew you thought he was hot, but, Lex, he’s your boss. And our best man.”

Catherine and I stare at her.

“Fine. It was different for us.” Emily twirls her glass.

I let it go.

“Yes. I know. Bad move. Stupid me. Past tense. Move on.” I wave my hand. “I walked past a cute firefighter on the way to work this morning. The ass on the guy. Jee-zus.”

Catherine chuckles.

She’s a single mom now after separating from her husband, and I don’t think she’s slept with anyone else yet.

I need to make her my wing-woman.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Emily looks hurt.

“It only happened last Friday,” I add. “It’s nothing.”

“It’s not nothing. You’re my best friend, and you slept with my future husband’s best friend.”

Well, when you look at it like that, now I feel like a complete fool. I really need her to understand it means nothing. All week I’ve worked hard to be professional and make sure my job is secure.

That’s all that matters.

I need to downplay it with the girls also, seeing as this new little social group of ours is kissing and telling.

It was nothing.

Mason made that abundantly clear, and it’s not like I have fallen in love with that damn frog, so it’s nothing.

Nothing, nothing, nothing.

“Look, both of us have put it behind us since the moment we walked out of the supply closet.” I smile and take a sip of my fizzy water.

“You fucked him in the supply closet!”

“Keep your voice down.” I squint, glancing around the restaurant. “Jesus, Em.”

“Sorry. But that’s kind of hot.” She glances at Catherine. “Block your ears. Why not his office? I mean, that’s—”

“Nope. Do not say those next words.” Catherine does in fact block her ears. “He’s my brother. We need rules.”

Emily and I laugh.

It would’ve been more comfortable in his office, that’s for sure. I had bruises on my back for a few days. A reminder that the entire thing was quick, erotic, but meant very little.

I’m sure Mason is already seeking out someone new to play with.

“It just happened. You must’ve noticed our chemistry.” I say, and Emily nods. “Well, it’s out of our systems now. Done. Over with. Both of us have moved on.”

Both the girls stare at me as if they don’t believe a word of it.

I hold up my hands.

“The firefighter? Craig? You guys told me not to go home with him. I was totally willing.”

I was not willing.

I was barely willing while dancing. Craig is nice looking, sure, but the truth is I was doing it to get under Mason’s skin, and it was working.

I hadn’t expected such a response, but now it’s blown up, and everyone knows we slept together.

I’m a little ashamed.

Easy Lexi, the PA who let her boss fuck her at work.

It’s only sexy if it’s a secret.

“Craig doesn’t sound like a good guy,” Emily says.

“It’s just sex. I don’t need him have cured cancer or adopted some refugees.” I roll my eyes. “Anyway, Terrance, our IT guy has been flirting like mad. If it doesn’t work out with the firefighter, I might go out with him.”

Emily doesn’t look convinced.

“You and Mason are in the wedding party, so please don’t make it awkward.”

“Not awkward at all,” I reply, too high-pitched. “It’s fine.”

Catherine sips her wine and smiles.

She bloody knows.

Things are not fine; they are very awkward. We don’t use first names, and our conversations are short and sharp with one another.

Mason even snapped at Terrance yesterday afternoon, telling him to return to his floor and not to show his face up here again this week.

I’ve never seen him like that before.

“Stop wasting company resources. Google your issues first.” He stormed off into his office.

They have a huge pitch for an international client next week, so he’s probably stressed. Apparently, it’s an enormous deal, one they are keeping highly confidential. Only a couple of the team know anything about it, and the files are all locked down.

I am hoping that after that happens, he returns to normal.

Whatever normal is.

I only knew Mason, who wanted to slip his hand under my skirt. Maybe he really is a grouch every day.

“The wedding will be fine. I’m meeting the guys at their fitting next week, and you know guys don’t care about these things. Sex is sex.”

“But you don’t...like him?”

“God no,” I lie. “He’s very annoying. Just very handsome and has a lovely cock.”

I could have left that last bit off.

While Catherine chokes and grabs a napkin, Emily starts laughing.

“Fine, I believe you. So, tell me about the firefighter. Where did you see him?”

She shouldn’t.

I was lying through my teeth.

Even about the firefighter.

Every night I’ve been having dreams about Mason laying me out on his large black desk and licking my pussy. I wake up wet, aching and wishing any other man on the planet would interest me.

But none do.

I have to fix this.
