The Detour
The streetlights hummed with life as Mark and Sarah Thompson strolled hand in hand, the sultry strains of jazz still ringing in their ears.
Their faces were flushed, partly from the smooth, smoky bourbon cocktails, partly from the electric energy of the night.
The neon lights of the city reflected off Sarah’s sequined dress, casting fleeting splashes of color on the sidewalk.
Her heels lent extra height to her petite frame, and her brown hair fell in loose curls down her back.
Mark, a young partner at a top law firm, still wore his tailored suit- tie pulled off and tucked into his pocket, collar open to let the cool night air brush against his neck. His polished shoes clicked rhythmically on the pavement, a faint counterpart to Sarah’s own cadence.
"We should do this more often," Sarah said playfully, with a hint of determination Mark recognized.
Visting the jazz club had been her suggestion- a tribute to their mutual passion for soulful tunes.
It was her way of anchoring their lives in something deeper, something more vivid than the endless grind of deadlines and obligations.
She tugged gently at his arm, pulling him closer, her green eyes sparkling with a mixture of mischief and affection.
As they turned the corner, Sarah slowed, her steps faltering as something in the window caught her eye.
Mark watched as she drifted toward the glass, her fingers grazing the cool surface, breath fogging slightly as she leaned in.
Her head tilted, eyes flickering with that quiet intensity he adored- the same look she had when she was behind her camera, lost in the details the rest of the world overlooked.
She studied the painting before her, its brushstrokes wild and untamed, a storm of color that somehow found harmony. “The movement in this piece...” she murmured, almost to herself. “It feels like- chaos finding its rhythm.”
Mark wasn't sure he saw what she did, but that never mattered. He saw her. The way she breathed in the art, absorbed it like light, as if it whispered something only she could understand. And God, he loved that about her.
She turned to him then, eyes warm, a small smile curving her lips. “We should come back here.” she said, her voice soft but certain, as if she’d already decided they would.
Mark nodded, not because he was particularly moved by the art, but because she was. Because he could stand here forever, watching her see the world in ways he never could.
“It’s beautiful,” he said, his gaze never leaving her.
The drive home was supposed to be routine- a gentle descent from the height of their date night.
The warm buzz of whiskey and music still lingered between them as Mark navigated the car through the city’s bustling streets.
The night had been perfect- soft lighting, slow saxophone melodies and Sarah’s laughter over the rim of her glass.
He reached over, fingers grazing her knee as she shifted closer, her dress riding up just enough to make him wish they were already home.
“What the ...?” Mark muttered; brow furrowed as he slowed at the unexpected orange detour sign. The usual route home was blocked off, forcing them onto an unfamiliar road that wound through the city’s darker edges.
"Looks like we're taking the scenic route tonight," Mark said, a half-smile playing on his lips as he guided the vehicle into the detour. It was a minor inconvenience, but one that seemed to promise an extension of their evening adventure.
Sarah leaned back into the leather seat, she watched the city pass by through the window, every shadow and light a potential subject for her lens. The detour led them away from the city center, the buildings growing sparse as the city’s refined charm melted away.
Then, Sarah saw it.
The lurid pink glow cut through the night like an invitation, its soft haze illuminating the darkened street ahead.
The Candy Club.
The sign pulsed like a heartbeat, seductive and steady.
Sarah bit her lip, turning to Mark.
“Why don't we stop for a nightcap?" she suggested with a playful tilt of her head, her words laced with a cocktail-induced mischief.
Mark’s fingers tightened around the wheel. His first instinct was to laugh it off- this wasn’t them. They were polished dinners and well-mannered parties, slow kisses and familiarity.
Not this.
Not strip clubs.
But Sarah was still watching him, her lips parted in quiet anticipation. There was something electric in her gaze, something daring.
His pulse ticked higher.
“You’re serious?” he asked, testing her.
Sarah reached out, tracing a finger along the inside of his wrist. “Why not?”
Mark swallowed. There were a thousand reasons why not. And yet, he felt the pull. Maybe it was the cocktails, or the way her dress slid up her thigh, or maybe- just maybe- it was the idea of stepping in to something unknown.
The turn signal clicked on.
Sarah grinned.
"A night of firsts," his voice a low rumble of excitement as he steered the car into the parking garage.
“Just one drink,” he said, more to himself than to her.
But Sarah was already unbuckling her seatbelt, already reaching for the door.
Something told him one drink wasn’t going to be enough.
Mark followed Sarah through the doors, and the moment they stepped inside the air changed.
The club's interior was bathed in a soft, dim light, casting a warm glow over plush, velvety fabrics in rich burgundies and regal purples that draped the walls and furniture.
Sleek leather couches and armchairs beckoned guests to sink into their luxurious embrace, offering a perfect vantage point for the night's entertainment.
The Candy Club was nothing like the seedy, dimly lit joints Mark had imagined.
It was opulent, seductive- designed to draw people in and never let them go.
A grand mahogany bar stretched the length of the room, polished to a dark sheen, reflecting the golden glow of pendant lights that hung like floating orbs above it. Bartenders in crisp black shirts and vests mixing drinks with effortless flair.
On the main floor, deep velvet booths lined the perimeter, their high backs offering privacy for intimate conversations and whispered propositions. Black leather chairs and low tables were arranged in small clusters, where patrons sipped expensive cocktails and let their eyes linger on the stage.
And the stage-
It was the heart of the room.
A polished runway of illuminated glass extended from the main stage, glowing beneath the soft press of dancer’s heels.
The backdrop shimmered with a cascade of golden fringe, catching the light as a stunning woman- tall, toned, impossibly flexible- twirled around a glistening chrome pole with effortless grace.
Her hair fanned out as she spun, her body moving in liquid, hypnotic waves.
More dancers, clad in sheer lingerie and sky-high heels, moved like living art beneath the soft glow of deep red and violet lights. Their bodies curved and twisted, teasing the crowd, their gazes sharp and knowing.
Mark swallowed hard.
“Wow,” Sarah murmured beside him, her fingers brushing his wrist. Her eyes were wide, her lips slightly parted as she took it all in- the luxurious decadence, the raw sexuality, the way everything and everyone in this room seemed to vibrate with a slow-burning, unspoken hunger.
The low, sensual beat of the music seemed to pulse through the air, a hypnotic rhythm that beckoned to be swayed to. The murmur of conversation and the clatter of glasses added to the symphony of sound in the club.
Sarah's gaze danced across the room, alight with the raw beauty of the dancers who moved with an effortless grace that captivated her artistic senses. She could already imagine capturing the fluid motion of their bodies with her camera, the interplay of light and shadow playing across skin and silk.
A tall man in a tailored black suit appeared, offering them a knowing smile. “First time?”
Mark hesitated, but Sarah only grinned. “Is it that obvious?”
The man chuckled. “Don’t worry. We’ll take good care of you.” He gestured toward the bar. “Can I get you a table, or would you prefer seats at the bar?”
Sarah turned to Mark, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “What do you think?”
Mark let out a slow breath, feeling the weight of the moment settle over him.
Everything about this place whispered temptation.
And he wasn’t sure he wanted to resist.
Mark and Sarah settled into a deep velvet booth, the cushions sinking beneath them as they took in the scene around them. A low, sultry beat thrummed through the air, a rhythm that seemed to match the sway of the dancers on stage.
"Quite the talent here," Mark commented, a playful grin tugging at his lips, his voice carrying equal parts admiration and mischief.
His eyes flickered over the stage, taking in the way the dancers moved- their naked forms fluid, magnetic, captivating.
But even as he appreciated the spectacle, his focus remained tethered on Sarah.
His hand found her waist, and he pulled her close, a silent reminder that no matter the temptation that surrounded them, they were each other's center.
Sarah turned her head, arching a knowing brow. “Enjoying the show?” she teased, her voice laced with challenge but there was no jealousy- only curiosity, only intrigue.
Mark’s grin widened, his thumb stroking absently along her hip. “I am,” he admitted, letting the words hang between them before adding, lower, just for her, “But you know you’re always my favorite view.”
He pressed a gentle kiss to her neck before signaling for a server.
A sleek brunette in a form-fitting black dress glided toward them with a practiced smile.
“What can I get you?” she asked, her voice smooth as silk.
Sarah leaned in, eyes glimmering with excitement. “I’ll have a French 75.”
The server turned her attention to Mark.
“Macallan, neat.”
The server nodded and disappeared, leaving them in the low-lit intimacy of their booth. Sarah shifted closer, her thigh brushing against Mark’s. She was still glowing from the rush of the night, her eyes dancing as she watched the dancers with quiet fascination.
