Chapter 31

Chapter

Thirty-One

Maxed rolled over in the bed, yawning and scratching his chest. Desiree wasn’t in bed anymore, but he could smell the scent of bacon and hear laughter coming from the other room.

After putting on a T-shirt and sleep pants, he walked into the kitchen to see Jose, Tiny, Andrea, Nightshade, Iris, and Teddy all around the dining room table laughing and cutting up. This is what he wanted for Desiree and for their future.

To him, this is what home was. This is what a family does.

“Ah, sleepy head finally wakes up. You’re making him lazy sis. He’s usually up way earlier than this and heads to the gym on his off days.” Teddy threw a piece of biscuit his way when Max flipped him off.

“Cut it out, Teddy. You’re as ass.” Desiree demanded as she stared her younger brother down.

“It’s okay, hellcat. He’s just jealous because he doesn’t have a hot girl keeping him up all night with cardio workouts.” Max fired back as he winked at Desiree.

“Ew, dude. That’s my sister!” Teddy pretended to gag at Max’s statement.

“Doesn’t mean I’m a nun, asshole.” Desiree flipped Teddy off.

“Yes, you are. You’re a virgin and that’s all I will believe.” Teddy decided as he crossed his arms across his chest.

“Dude, even I know our sister isn’t a virgin. You on the other hand, I’m starting to wonder. Not gay, are you?” Jose fired out, ducking the biscuit that flew his way from Teddy.

“Oh shit! I was wondering the same thing.” Desiree gasped as she looked at Jose in shock. “Teddy, you’re not jealous that I’m riding the pickle that you wanted, are you? I mean it would explain so much.”

“Fuck you. All of you.” Teddy growled when the whole room erupted in laughter.

“Calm down, dipshit. They are just giving you shit because you’re acting like a little kid over his big sister getting dick finally.” Iris rolled her eyes as she winked Desiree’s way.

Max couldn’t help the laugh that came out at the teasing they gave Teddy. Sometimes he really puts himself in those situations.

“Iris, has there been any word on who could be targeting Desiree?” Max asked, sitting down next to her and piling food onto his plate.

“We have a few possibilities. Right now, we have a team following Daniels and one following Mutt. Those two have been hanging out quite a bit. It seems they are also on the police’s radar, but they haven’t been able to nab them for anything yet.

Wizard is looking into their phone records and bank statements as we speak.

Seems Mutt may be working for the CIA, so my contact is checking into a few things there. ”

“Wait, you’re telling me the CIA would actually hire that asshole? That’s the worst thing they can do.” Desiree muttered, shock in her voice.

“They hire all kinds of degenerates if you want the honest truth. Usually, the ones like Mutt are taken in to do the wet work that those with semi morals won’t do when the big guy wants shit done.

Usually, they work hand in hand with the DIA to cause a stir that would lead to work or a disruption in another countries government that would give our country a benefit of something.

” Iris admitted as she took a bite of her food.

“One of the reasons I left the fucking job. The Army has a group of them too. Most of them are pretty good guys. But there are those that will do whatever it takes to make a mission complete, even if it cost innocent lives.” Tiny mumbled softly, yet loud enough for everyone to hear.

Desiree leaned back in her seat. There was so much about the dark side of agencies that she’d learned in the army and didn’t like.

She’d dealt with them so much in the Green Berets, but then she felt it was a necessary side of evil they needed to maintain when it came to dealing with the evils of the world.

Now, she wondered how much of it was used on their own people when she learned that Mutt was possibly a part of all of that.

“But even if that’s true, why would Mutt be coming after me?

I never reported him or Daniels for any of the shit I’d overheard.

Hell, even what I do know for fact, I’ve never reported them.

Stephens is dead. I never told command they were the cause of that.

So why come at me like they are?” Desire breathed deeply as she moved her head side to side trying to ease the stiffness there.

“Who knows why people do half the shit that they do, hellcat. If we knew, then we could eliminate so much war and death. We could actually have peace in this world.” Max rubbed her shoulder as he studied her.

Max knew she was getting frustrated. She hated being cooped up the way she had been.

Even with the state-of-the-art security that she now had, they still had roving patrols from the club and the others. No one was letting anything to be chanced now that the property had been expanded.

Even with a high stone fence, it could still be scaled, and cameras could be tampered with. They still had back-up grids in case someone tried to cut the feed to the main line.

Max wasn’t leaving anything to chance where Desiree was concerned. She was going to be his wife, and he would rain down hell on anyone who would try to harm her.

“So, are we not going to talk about that ring that’s on Desiree’s ring finger?” Nightshade asked as she took a bite of eggs.

“What ring?” Teddy asked looking around the table in confusion before his eyes landed on Desiree’s finger.

“Oh my God. You’re engaged?” Andrea cheered, as her chair scrapped the floor for her to lean over and get a better look.

“Yeah. Although he didn’t ask, he just placed it on my finger and told me to pick a date.” Desiree looked toward Max and smiled.

Fuck her smile was heaven to him. He knew what he wanted where she was concerned.

Now he was just ready for her to choose a date so he could make her his officially. If he had his way, they would elope and just have a reception.
