20. Finley #2

“Son, I really don’t understand where this anger is coming from?

It was only a few short days ago you were sitting in my office asking for me to help with your new mate.

Were the books and other information I gave you not helpful?

Did you reach out to the contact I gave you to help when she came into her power?

” Morwyn asked, her brows creased in confusion.

Zander started to answer, but I placed a hand on his knee, stilling him.

“I believe that the change is due to me. When I mentioned we’ve had an eventful few days, some information about the Senate has come to light, putting Zander in an awkward position.

You are his mother and as well as a senator, a role you take extremely serious, making Zander unsure of how much to trust you with. ”

“Then it’s a good thing I came because I don’t believe he would trust what I’m here to tell him if it wasn’t in person.

I’m not sure what gifts your magic has presented with Finley, but I know an elf can sense when another is lying to them easier if they are face to face,” Morwyn stated, her gaze never leaving mine in our little standoff.

I was stronger than her, but she believed her status would make me submit to her. Unfortunately for her, I didn’t give a shit about that. The Senate had already proven to me they are not to be trusted, so she would have to gain my respect first then we could consider working on trust between us.

“Speak whatever truth you have to share then,” I challenged, even if I wasn’t sure I had that skill or not, but Rath was also in the room, and two elves were better than one.

Seeing that I wasn’t going to back down or waver, she broke from my stare first, shifting to look at her son.

“I’m leaving your father and cutting ties with the pack.

Things have gotten too out of hand and I can’t sit by and let them use me as their shield any longer.

Peter and I plan on leaving the states and starting a new life overseas once I finish my term as senator. ”

The room went still as we all processed what she had just said.

Out of all the things I expected to be said, that was not on the list. It was unheard of for a member of the Senate to step down before they were either killed or a stronger person took over their position.

They made the world believe that they voted people into their spots, and they had to be re-elected to stay on, but that was all for show.

The supers treated it like everything else in our world—the strong get stronger, or they die.

For Morwyn to even consider the thought of doing what she said, something truly awful must have happened.

“What happened?” Zander demanded as he sat forward, giving his mother his full attention.

Morwyn smoothed her hands along her lap, trying to remove wrinkles that weren’t there. “I’m pregnant. It’s Peter’s child.”

“Seeing as how Dad hasn’t touched you since I was conceived, I can’t say I’m surprised at this news.

Mother, you know that if Father finds out, he’ll kill you for putting a blemish on him and his family name.

The Vaughan’s pride themselves on their reputation and a bastard child would not be something he will let slide.

That doesn’t even cover what will happen when the Senate finds out that you want to leave,” Zander rambled as he got to his feet and started to pace, running his hands over his scalp.

“They can’t know you’re pregnant. If they do, someone will go after it and you.

How did this happen after so many years? ”

“Do I need to sit you down and explain the birds and the bees to you now that you have a mate of your own?” Peter commented, crossing his arms and glowering at Zander.

Morwyn placed a hand on his arm, shaking her head.

“Peter, please, you and Zander need to find a way to be in the same room without going after each other. Our child is going to be his half-brother and I refuse to allow a world where Zander and this baby aren’t around each other.

I don’t know what happened between you two and I never pressed either of you about it, but that changes now.

” Morwyn turned to me and I saw a flash of fear lurking in the back of her expression.

I don’t think anyone else would have been able to see it, but with my abilities and being an omega, I could sense it deep down in her.

Morwyn was terrified and she came here to the only family she trusted to back her up.

My mother-in-law didn’t know me yet, but if there was one thing I was willing to do, it was to protect that child growing in her belly and ensure its parents had a chance to have a safe home.

I’d seen too many children in my life who lost their families and ended up at the Organization.

That wouldn’t happen to someone who was part of my family.

“Ask me,” I ordered, knowing the second reason she was here.

“Finley what…” Lane started to ask, but I held up a hand to silence him.

“You have to say the words, Morwyn, so there is no confusion, and I know you understand what you are asking me to do,” I pressed, leaning forward slightly, my magic pushing against its confines.

“I will warn you that you are making a request of an elf and once a request is made and accepted, there is no turning back. So if you truly want what I know is in your heart and on the tip of your tongue… say it.”

Rath moved to stand behind me, his hands resting on my shoulders, helping to ground my magic as it fought against my hold. It wanted to force Morwyn to tell us what she wanted and bind her to it, so we had the reason we needed to act.

“I want you to kill my current husband and mate, Gareth Vaughan, take down the Senate, and give me back my freedom,” Morwyn declared, her voice clear and confident, ringing with the truth of her desire.

Standing and walking over to her, I reached out a hand. When she slipped hers into mine, magic surged up her arm straight into her heart. A small symbol appeared on her wrist as well as mine, proof of our agreement and knowledge that should either of us betray the other, it will kill us both.

“Nin mel, do you know what you’ve just done?” Rath asked me, pain in his voice.

Releasing her hand, I turned to my elven mate, the one person who truly understood what I’d just done.

“You know I do, and it’s exactly what we needed.

There is no turning back now. The Dark Ring and the Senate will be destroyed by my hands.

Together, the eight of us will set this world free in the hopes that something more will come from it as we prune away all the darkness.

That is the world I’ve lived in all my life and now that I know there is something more…

something better… how can I stand by and do nothing? ”

“I should have expected no less from a woman who will one-day rules the elves,” Rath acknowledged, resigning himself to what I’d just set in motion.

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Noah raising his hand. “Ah, for those of us who don’t know that the fuck is going on, can one of you explain why I feel like what Finley just did wasn’t a good thing? Are we really going after Zander’s father and the Senate?”

“Twin, we already decided that we were going after the Senate before Mom showed up. Why are you freaking out?” Mason asked, smacking his twin’s hand down. “But maybe you could fill us in on the whole magic part of it. That made my hair stand on end and not in a fun way.”

“Finley made a binding pact with Morwyn,” Rath spoke up.

“If Finley doesn’t do what she promised, then it will kill her and Morwyn.

The same goes for the other party. If they go back on their word or try to stop what they requested from happening, it will do the same thing.

Both are tied together until the job is done or they are dead.

Nothing can break an elven promise once the seal is placed. ”

“Well fuck,” Mason stated oh so eloquently.
