Chapter 5

Malin

We came all the way down the driveway to my red Lamborghini. I clicked my fob and the gull-wing doors opened on both sides. Cassius got in, his mouth hanging open in awe.

I heard him say softly, “I’ve seen this type of car only rarely where I grew up but never up close.”

I slid in on the spongey black leather. The seat hugged me like a long-lost lover, but my pants felt awful. I hadn’t had a chance to dry them. It didn’t matter. I planned to go straight home. I pushed a button and the doors levered closed. “Do you like it?”

“Yes, sir.”

The engine started up with a power that rumbled through me. I never tired of it.

We left the property quickly and once on the road I accelerated. Cassius seemed to relax the faster I went.

“Want to see how fast it can go?”

His eyes were bright as he looked at me with a strong nod.

I knew the perfect stretch of road. No traffic. No cops. And took her up to 130 mph. Under his breath, Cassius kept saying, “Wow. Wow.”

It ended all too soon. The thrill lifted and silence followed as I took us through a small town to the hills where I lived. Why was I taking him home? Because I had nowhere else to go. And maybe there was also a part of me that wanted to show off more in front of him. Alone.

“Is Klonis always that jolly and nice of a fella?” I asked.

Cassius cleared his throat. “Um, well, um yeah.”

“Wonderful. He seems so spicy. My type.” Alphas like him were fun to tease. And despise.

Cassius gulped.

“Well, do you think they were jealous?”

Cassius stared straight ahead. “The other alphas?”

“Yeah, that’s who I meant. They stared enough at us, didn’t they?”

“I guess.”

“Mostly at you, I’d say.” I gave her a little more gas going up a steeper hill.

“No. They watched you, not me.” His voice sounded a bit bolder now.

“Ah ha. Well, that’s because most of them hate me.”

“Seriously? Why?”

The omega was opening up a bit. Curious. Maybe that was a good sign, maybe not. But I was bored and the company was what it was.

When I didn’t answer quickly enough, Cassius threw another question at me. “If it’s true they all hate you, why go to the party?”

“Bish invited me.”

“Is Bish a good friend?”

I shrugged. “Plus,” I added. “I was bored.”

We drove in silence, for which I was grateful. I did not enjoy interrogations. Especially by people who were beneath my time and attention.

But new thoughts I wasn’t used to bombarded my mind. Cassius was different. I’d directed my attention on him at my own will. No one had forced it or made it a dare. It had been my decision. Out of the blue.

He is not beneath us. He has never done anything to us. The sooner you see that the better off you will be.

Malinekan was right, though I didn’t have to like it. “Leave me alone,” I mumbled under my breath.

“What?” Cassius looked at me.

“Nothing. Wasn’t talking to you.” I glared ahead at the road, wondering if I’d end up regretting this whole evening.
