Chapter 21
Scott watched as Tori’s taillights disappeared. Maybe he should leave now, wait and ask Ben his questions tomorrow. “I’ll catch up with you in the morning.”
“Wait.” Ben held up his hand. “I don’t figure I can keep Tori from investigating, so see if she will keep me in the loop.”
“I’ll try, but I don’t know how much influence I have on her.” He hesitated. “Did you learn anything about the person who shot at us today?”
He shook his head. “Without a license plate number, it’s almost impossible—there have to be hundreds of gray pickups in the area. I did talk with the Knoxville detective, and—” Ben’s cell rang, and he checked the ID. “This is Detective Bishop now.”
Scott waited while Ben answered. “Logan.”
The sheriff listened intently, his face settling into a frown. “If they’re divorced, why is there still a joint account?” He listened again. “I see. Okay, thanks for letting me know.”
Ben pocketed his phone, and Scott said, “What’s going on?”
“Bishop had said he’d call if they got any indication that Calvin Russell was headed this way, and a jointly owned credit card issued to the Russells was used near Memphis a couple of hours ago. Since Megan is in Knoxville, Bishop is assuming her ex-husband used it.”
“Why would they have a joint account?”
“That’s what I asked, and Bishop said the wife tried to cancel it, but the credit card company said both had to request a cancellation, and the husband refused.”
“If he’s in the area, he could’ve been the shooter. I was afraid it was someone from my past.”
“Anyone in particular?”
Scott shook his head. “It could be any number of people—I’ve made a lot of enemies as an undercover agent.”
Ben nodded. “The credit card charge doesn’t guarantee that the Russell guy was the shooter. Why don’t you check with your undercover coordinator and see if there’s any word on the street about you having a price on your head?”
“Good idea.” He started for his pickup. “Let me know if you get any other information on Russell.”
With Ben’s assurances ringing in his ears, Scott jogged to his truck and climbed in. Maybe he could catch Tori. Her lead wasn’t too much. He kicked up gravel as he sped away from Zack’s driveway.
