Broken Blood Bonus Scene 1

Broken Blood

Prologue

Tara

No means to escape.

Believe me, I’ve tried. And I’ve spent countless hours dreaming up plans and diversions and whatever else my foggy, exhausted brain can focus on between visits from Them.

I shudder and redirect my thoughts. But the only thing left besides contemplating my ownership of this plastic shard is Wes. Every once in a while I’ll think of him and my mind will wander to others. My mom, Grandma, George, Jack and Fee, Cambria, Angela, Alex.

My chest aches for all of them. But mostly, it hurts for him. I don’t know if he’s all right. Whatever illness he fell prey to before I was taken—I don’t know if it’s something he can heal from and not knowing terrifies me.

My nightmares are filled with images of his face, pale and unmoving.

No breath in his lungs. The more horrific ones include Them tossing him into a shallow grave and pouring dirt over his exposed body.

I’ve woken screaming so many times, They’ve started giving me sleeping pills at night.

I tried not swallowing them but frankly, the rest is better when I do. And my body heals faster when I rest.

I return the plastic shard to its hiding place against the base board and crawl away from the homemade calendar. It’s a sad attempt to stay sane, counting time, but it’s better than nothing.

And it’s all I’ve got. Until someone comes for me. Or until I can find a way home.
